Support URL-Based Search Shortcuts Like Chrome

Sure! I used the classic search shortcuts for years. I also did for a long time after Chrome introduced this feature. But using the actual URL as a search shortcut for me worked out to be far more intuitive. YouTube was just an example. There are plenty of sites I search only occasionally, where it doesn't really make sense to create a dedicated shortcut in Vivaldi - especially since I’d probably wouldn't remember it by the time I needed it again. In Chrome, this isn’t an issue. I just type part of the site’s URL, hit Tab when it autocompletes, and search right away - no setup required. It works for any site, which makes the feature incredibly convenient. The classic shortcuts still exist alongside it in Chrome, so it’s the best of both worlds. The same could apply to Vivaldi.

@niko83 Correct me if I'm wrong, but Ecosia is by default on the list of all locations, all countries, no matter where you live. We are talking about the Android/Vivaldi browser. Of course, Ecosia is not enabled by default immediately after installation. But any user can easily assign it in settings - it is in the list.

I have had this problem repeatedly since upgrading Vivaldi a couple weeks ago. @wortwart Did you manage to find a more permanent solution than adding a space at the end of each URL?

@Spikey89 Hi, to make it clear to me, with quick command bar you meant the Bookmark Bar? We have Quick Commands (F2), if you select only bookmarks it show the content of a bookmark folder. [image: 1748359753724-eca926b3-5fb5-4493-839a-1b971b6c8f2f-image.png]

I confirm that Qwant is already added at first installation between the search engines. You can try in settings/search/ pushing the button "restore defaults" and if you have added custom engines, check the box "keep custom searches", if you have a up to date Vivaldi it should also add Qwant among the others.

The hint is missing on my 7.4. //EDIT. My goodness, tested a fresh profile; hint vanishes forever when i hit a key – i never hit the x-button. Sometimes Vivaldi browser is a usability hell foe me Thank you for spotting; have edited my previous post to reflect this.

@908 F11 is a shortcut. F and D are access keys. Access Keys are generated automatically, though they can be hardwired by editing the menu and adding an ampersand (&) before the desired access key. The Search Engine access keys are hard-wired to the engine’s position in the list. In the menu customisation dialog they are shown as [All search engines] or [All search engines](as Subfolder).

Considering how customizable Vivaldi already is, offering an optional way to repurpose double-click or middle-click for tab name URL/search input is a natural fit. Safari already does something similar, so it's not without precedent. It's the same with renaming! Renaming a tab is fine, but what's the practical use of that compared to quick control and efficiency? The idea isn’t to truncate the main URL bar—it's to hide it entirely for people who don’t always need it. Editing and searching could happen directly in the tab title area. If there’s room to rename a tab, there’s room for this. You can try it right now by renaming a tab; there's plenty of space for everyday searches. Alternatively, if you select all or press a button, the address bar can be lowered as a floating or typical panel. This would be optional, like most things in Vivaldi.

@ArskaBoi On android, changing the geometry of the interface on the fly is a very difficult task. Now, if only android/Vivaldi supported skins or themes..... But it doesn't.

@Pesala Thank you for replying! The linked request does ask for a different feature (dropping a link into the viewport to open it) which is functionally quite different from this request. In particular the feature I am asking for is already present in Vivaldi, just implemented in a subjectively poor manner. To illustrate I have created a short clip to clarify the exact behavior I am hoping to adress: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJEmHL9ifvY Although not particularly high impact, the interface does suggest to the user that a dragged item can be dropped onto an existing tab, which I would suggest to class as bug as it does not produce any effect. Thank you for reconsidering this request.

@greybeard Hi, I guess find and replace should work in a text editor. The file Bookmarks is a .json file Iirc, no idea if you can open it on Windows with the simple text editor. Cheers, mib
