❓FAQ
-
This is a short list of most asked questions & answers to them.
The list should be only in this post, all the rest of this thread should be discussion about what to add/remove. If I, for some reason, become less active, I encourage the mods to edit this post, & someone (anyone) to back it up somewhere else (in case it’ll disappear).
Important: If an answer isn’t clear to you, search the forum, & if it still isn’t clear, create a new topic instead of asking here (& please mention that you’ve already seen the FAQ).
The Qs here:
- The tab bar takes a lot of space & there’re some images
- The tab bar changes colours like a chameleon
- How can I move buttons?
- The UI has disappeared!
- I can’t install extensions from the Chrome Web Store
- [WIP] Can’t log in to Google services
Q: The tab bar takes a lot of space & there’re some images
It looks like this:
Horizontal:
Vertical:
A: Go to Settings → Tabs → Tab Display → Tab Options & untick Show Tab Thumbnails.
Q: The tab bar changes colours like a chameleon
…every time I switch tabs, the colour changes.
A: Go to Settings → Themes, click on the Edit Theme button below the list of themes & untick Accent Colour from Active Page.
Q: How can I move buttons?
A: This is a little weird in Vivaldi. You have to press
Shift
(keep it pressed), click & drag the button, & then releaseShift
. Also, you can only drag buttons between the left side of the address bar & the status bar, & reorder (but not move elsewhere) the extension & side panel icons. You can remove buttons from their right-click menu. If you want to get them back, unfortunately you have to reset all the buttons in the tool bar where they originally were.

@CheVe11e_191 may I reuse your screen recording here? (I used it but then thought that it’d be better to ask first)

Q: I can’t install extensions from the Chrome Web Store
There’s no button to install the extension.
A: In settings → Privacy → Google extensions, enable Web Store, & then restart Vivaldi.
Q: Can’t log in to Google services

@potmeklecbohdan I guess there should be something like «Where did my panels go/I lost my panels». Answer: use
F4
or toggle button in status bar. -
Some settings are tied together in a way that is not obvious from the description, i.e. if you want/don't want one of the settings tied together, at the moment the only option is to change the "main" setting it is under (I created a feature request to separate out these settings):
"New Tab from Link Opens in Background" is tied to
- Clone tab in background
- Bookmarks open in background
"Open Tabs in Current Tab Stack" is tied to
- Behaviour of tabs opened from unstacked tiled tabs
If I remember correctly there are a few other settings with similar issues, but I don't remember exactly what they are; maybe someone who remembers them can mention them.
-
- Is this a FAQ? I can’t tell since I now filter unread more as I want to read this than I don’t want to read this, but anyway…
- How would you phrase it in a way that’s short & obvious? It seems impossible to me.
- ‘I changed a setting & it affects something else’ doesn’t seem right, who remembers changing a setting & connects some misbehaviour with it?
- We’d probably have to list all such settings, which seems wrong to me again.
-
Might be good to include something about the
Toggle UI
default shortcut,Ctrl
+F11
.That seems to pop up often enough.
-
@hlehyaric & @nomadic Thanks! Also break mode to be added.
-
@potmeklecbohdan There have been quite a few threads on these issues since v3.5 stable came out ("Where is the setting for clone tab in background [mentioned in the changelog]?", "Behaviour of unstacked tiled tabs has changed[, is there any way of changing it back?]").
Perhaps it could be phrased as "I have read that there is such a setting, but I can't find it in Settings" or "Something was changed in the changelog, is there an option to change it back to the old setting". I don't think we'd need to list all such settings, just the ones that forum users remember being asked frequently.
Also, perhaps it's good to just raise awareness that there are settings that are secretly tied together, so that more users can realise that misbehaviour may be related to changing a setting (that's how I figured out that bookmarks open in background is related to this new setting).
-
@valiowk Hmm, I still don’t believe it. Is it really better to yell at them just because they didn’t match an FAQ entry, when it’s difficult even to think of how to phrase it?
I don’t know, maybe I just have a wrong mindset now. Can please the others tell us what do they think?
Also, @hlehyaric, can you please check that the mcOS shortcuts are right? I copied them from the help pages, but just in case…

I hate to be a wet-blanket, but an FAQ will not make the slightest difference.
- Most users will not even see the FAQ list, let alone read it. This forum has so many categories.
- It is a lot of work to maintain such a list and make it easy to understand. It is much easier to save boiler-plate text in notes to reply to the FAQ.
This is one of the FAQ
- Right-click, Open in New Background Tab
- Ctrl+click
- Middle-click
- Mouse Gesture, Open Link in Background Tab (Over a Link)
- Vote for Option to Open New Tabs in Background as Default
-
@Pesala True, but OTOH it’s easier if there’s one thread/something for everyone, not that everyone has to manage their own version. Also, this is easy to quote & copy to a note if it’s easier to use for you.
Btw., one of my notes:
