@mbert said in Set default target language for automatic translation:
The new translation feature is quite nice and will hopefully eventually make another add-on obsolete.
At the moment there is one thing missing (or did I miss that it is actually available?): As target language vivaldi always offers my my operating system's language (which is English). However I would like to use a different target language. I tried playing around with the list of languages in the settings dialogue but this does not seem to have any effect.
Any hint?
I would like to reiterate the original question, and that is to set the target language without having to reset every time Vivaldi is executed. The fact that the translator feature is included in Vivaldi is an absolute plus. I too have used outside translators that are not integrated in the browser and though not difficult to deal with, the inclusion of the translator in the application is a definite plus. The ability to set the original and the target language on a semi-permanent basis would be a welcome option in future releases.
While I was investigating other problem, see here: https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxquestions/comments/zxqm4f/some_websites_only_play_video_on_windows_or_mac/ I found the solution.
After all I did the missing piece was the kubuntu-restricted-extras package. After installing it video acceleration finally started working!
Now that I got this far I may as well go all the way, right? Using Intel_GPU_TOP to see what's happening with the GPU while the video is playing:

It's a bit different from what shows when I use Firefox. On Firefox the "Render/3D" is much lower, almost half, and there's no activity to "VideoEnhance". What is being "enhanced"? And while only Vivaldi does it? Isn't there a way to disable this and lower the Render/3D for maximum efficiency?
@FredBobo
Hi, write anything in the DDG image search field, set as default, choose DDG as image search engine, delete Bing.

Maybe you can add a real URL for DDG image search, no idea if DDG can do reverse image search.

It's been fine for the past two days using the xfwm4 compositor.
In order to change the window title bar (Openbox theme), the window manager setting must to be changed from xfwm4 (it's also a window manager) to openbox, (which isn't a compositor) before the theme could be changed.
@npro that worked perfectly. Had to remove both the gtk and gnome versions and replace with the kde version. Thanks very much. I don't know why you didn't have kdialog, maybe something I normally install pulled it in as a dependency. Any way thanks again.
@irritable 5.6.2867.50 run s on many Linxu distries.
Try a reinstall of Vivaldi, may be it had not fetched and installed the special libffmpeg and DRM codec for Vivaldi.
Run sudo /opt/vivaldi/update-ffmpeg
And read

https://help.vivaldi.com/desktop/media/widevinecdm-eme-drm-netflix-amazon-spotify/
Or you make no use of hardware acceleration, see Settings โ Webpages
Or your GPU drivers are older ones or incompatible dispay server settings.
Check inetrnal page vivaldi://gpu if HWA is active for video decoding.
@titiAtout
Cool, you can work now but this is only a workaround.
If you have a good CPU it should manage all well, I disabled HW acceleration once, forget and donยดt even notice it.
Some user report issues with Intel Xe and some Nvidia GPU.

@DoctorG thanks for the input.
As I mentioned I do not use any extension.
My computer works fine. Everything else works fine and is very fast. Vivaldi is very fast as well ... most of the time, that is.
It is a temporary phenomenon that kicks in all of a sudden. (while everything else OS/Desktop/Apps works fine and fast) I can open a different browser or app, which goes quick and without any issues, while Vivaldi is acting up this way.
I had many many more tabs open and everything was fine. No problem for Vivaldi.
It is definitely not resource usage related.
It is not related to any specific web site(s) either.
It can actually happen even when I have one or two tabs open and nothing else running on the computer.
Vivaldi simply decides that now it will stall for a second and react only every other second ๐คทโ
My guess is, it is doing something in the background
@hdmule
No, you create a second profile your default profile is untouched.
Some user have several for Home, Work, Fun, there are independent.
Remember to close all tabs on the new profile, donยดt change or install anything, just test.
At next start of Vivaldi you get a window for choosing your default profile or the new one.
Cheers, mib
