When I'm in the Vivaldi browser, how do I see that VPN is enabled and working?

@jacobheringman the in browser Proton is just a proxy ( like all VPN extensions you cant have a full vpn as browser extension )

You could use it as Double hop or on the fly change of location that just affects the browser.

but i didnt check yet as i use another paid vpn , but its likely just worse performing free servers

You don't need to create a new account on the Proton website — it's created automatically when you log in through Vivaldi. To log in to proton.me, use the 'Forgot password' option, and then you'll be able to set a new one.

When first subscribing to Vivaldi browser, I was already paying for a ProtonVPN account. Upon adding the ProtonVPN extension in Vivaldi, I logged into Proton with my existing paid-for credentials and was granted access to the extended country list when clicking on the VPN button in the Vivaldi address bar.
However, if I login to ProtonVPN first from the Windows desktop to initiate IP obscuration, as well as port forwarding for my Torrent client, my browsing session is protected, yet clicking the VPN button in Vivaldi browser declares unprotected.
TL/DR: I did from the start what you are asking about, secondaz, but the extension still acts a bit weird.

@dougcp I connect to a free server using the VPN in Vivaldi and mostly it's been a Japanese server that I've been connected to, but a couple of times it's been a USA server. Currently, as of this connection, it's a server in Seattle. Perhaps it's the luck of the draw, as it were.

For about three years, I used to have the paid service with ProtonVPN. I gave that up some time ago, though. Now, I'm using the free option that recently came with Vivaldi.

Another good thing I've found out, they actually have split tunneling for the Linux app, something Proton users have been begging for years (it's the top voted feature request), and only now in the next few months we might get.

I can download files, yes.

When the browser was updated and asked to restart the browser, I did it and noticed the new VPN button, but nothing was installed apart from the icon.

Just to let you know, I sent a message about the double settings button at the bottom left corner as well.

Yes. I use several profiles in my daily work and each profile again opens the VPN ad page on startup. Closing that page does not have any effect. It opens next time again.

I also very rarely use a VPN, just to bypass IP restrictions and censorship.

Before I used to use free firefox VPN, we could choose only among 3 free servers already pre-defined, but that was enough for me.

The fact that in here in Vivaldi the free user cannot chose the free server already cuts the chance to bypass country
IP restrictions.

To tell the truth, proton vpn extension normally worked after I wrote my above post.But, I don't find the reason.
It may continue working normally or be not out of work again.

The "switch" is done by websites detecting geolocation and slecting the language related to location.
