Configurable Middle-click (e.g. open Tabs in Foreground)
-
i already made this request here:
https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/25542/configurable-middle-click/1please vote there so we combine the votes, thanks!
-
2 years later and still no option?!
(btw, how can i add tags to the first post?)
-
@schreck Sorry for the very late reply to your question (I've only just noticed it, despite notifications...).
Yeah, the extension works fine for me and does exactly what I want: opens the tabs in the foreground when middle-clicking. Still would prefer the option baked in like Opera had.
I also agree that our thread's votes should be combined (I've already voted on yours). I do remember when Vivaldi was first starting, I made a request on the Snapshots in Feb 2016 and some other post on feature requests for 1.8/1.9 (2017) for this function. Sorry that I missed your thread, though. So, yeah, merging votes/threads would be great.
-
This is the single thing I miss the most from other browsers. Can't be that hard to implement?
-
@Gwen-Dragon Would be nice to know if it's on the "to do" list. I'm OK with the extension mentioned above, so it's not "urgent" for me, but it'd be nice to know if middle-mouse button customisation will be worked on in future, even if not today.
-
@Gort With over 2,700 feature requests, and a small team, those needed by few users or difficult to implement may have to wait for a long time. Wherever you see that a feature is tagged as In Progress, it may get done this year rather than next.
-
@Pesala Yeah, thanks. I appreciate that the team is small and I'm appreciative as to what features Vivaldi already has. As I said, it's not urgent for me. I was more curious as to if it's being considered?
-
@Gort Almost all feature requests will be considered, especially those with over 50 upvotes, but as you can see this thread is not yet tagged as Pipeline, let alone In Progress. I have asked the Community Manager to go through and update the tags on all popular threads, but there has been no change. This thread has only 20 upvotes.
-
@Pesala Thanks for the clarification.
Ah well, I just hope that the extension continues to work till the feature is implemented, if ever.
-
@BSSM I already voted for this feature request, and answered questions on why it has not been implemented yet.
I only fight against the entitled ones who think everyone should drop all other work to fix their pet bug / implement their pet feature request. Yes, Opera Presto, which is the reason for the existence of Vivaldi, has an option to configure middle-click behaviour, but that had many more developers and many more years of development.
I offer workarounds because I know from five years’ experience that it may take years for a feature request to come to the top of the stack of so many things to be done.
This thread is not tagged as In Progress yet in spite of my request to the Community Manager to tag popular requests. I heard that the Team regularly discuss FQs with 50 or more votes. There are many of them.
Votes for Feature Requests

@BSSM I have to admit that if the extension I mentioned above didn't exist or gets broken in future updates, it'd make me question using Vivaldi as my primary browser on my desktop.
The feature is how I work, and have done so for over twenty years, so being able to set it is one of the first things I do with a browser. It's such a basic feature, one that was in the original Opera, and one that you can enable in Firefox (which I'd likely swap back to being my primary).
Still, for now, the extension works in lieu of the feature.
-
@BSSM I did not edit your comment.
You're comparing chalk and cheese. Middle-click to open a link in the foreground is not a vital feature like playing videos.
Options have to be added, which means writing more code.
-
@BSSM I understand your concern. Still, I didn't just install it without doing a thorough check about the developer's credentials. Also, the source is freely available to peruse (it's small enough and not that complex; take a look yourself). Its code simplicity does beg further questions.
I'm loath to install extensions and have very few, so I don't install them lightly. Still, yeah, I do understand that it shouldn't have to be this way and that such a feature should really be baked into Vivaldi without the need for a third party extension and all the problems that that can pose.

thats not writing new code. its just a second to put this into the options!!

I used extension called "Tab Activate" for a long time just for this feature.
Now with a new version of Vivaldi (3.5.2115.73) it's not working anymore.
I will try to find similar extensions and try them out.
Hope this feature is someday coming to Vivaldi. -
Same here, I'm deeply missing a way to keep the current page opened and open links in a new foreground tab with a simple MMB click.
Basically I find it more productive if the current default behavior was reversed.
I would prefer to open a link in a new foreground tab with a simple MMB click.
With Shift + MMB click, it would open in a new tab in the background. It is my understanding that a lot of browsers offer this choice, except Chrome and Vivaldi.
You need a 3rd party extension, which does the job for now, but without any warranty it will last.A quick example: if I'm searching something on a search engine, I usually open the first link in a new tab, check if I find what I was looking for, if the information is not there at all, I simply close the tab, which instantly display the previous tab (the search results) exactly how I left it. No webpage reloading, no scrolling needed, no time wasted.
Please consider this feature which I would dare to call a basic feature.

Vivaldi has replaced Firefox as my desktop browser a few years ago, when the function with the tab groups was deleted. The second tab row in the current Vivaldi I find ingenious!
What I can never get used to, however, is that a simple middle click opens the new tab only in the background. Neither the combination with the shift key, nor the mouse gesture can replace this function, sorry.
I was hoping the "Open new tabs from links in background" feature would finally solve the problem. Great, when I select that I have two mouse buttons to open tabs in the background. What kind of nonsense is this?

still nothing. unbelievable.

Not really so surprising. The request only has 28 votes at the moment and is just one of nearly four thousand feature requests. I don't suppose that it is something that would take only an hour or two.
-
thats not the point. the point is that a configurable middle mouse button should be obligatory and the developers just seem to have forgotten to implement this.
