@DeerWhale Translate works fine on selected text for the linked PDF file.

I do not think it is feasible to make the translate page feature to work on a PDF, as it is not a webpage.

No doubt, someone who knows will tell us if it is possible. Either way, this may be something only the Chromium developers can do, as they wrote the plugin.

Translate history is then cleared on restarting Vivaldi. Make a bookmark to vivaldi://restart to use whenever you want to clean up.

This now works in the latest Snapshot. The translation dialog appears at the top left of the screen, even when the Panel is on the right, but at least it works.

@vdk100 It is not possible at the moment, even modifying by vivaldi://translate-internals and removing the interface language does not work. There is some block imposed by the programmers

I think remembering the target language would be the best option. Same for the in-text translator.

You can use other translation engines in a Web Panel. DeepL is often recommended for the quality of its translations. Bing is OK IMO - it offers a huge range of languages. Vivaldi has its own to preserve privacy for its users. User data is sent to Vivaldi’s dedicated servers, and none of their data is shared with others. This may not be the case with other options.

@sirien-neiris this is nitpicking in my opinion.

Most people are going to use a few languages at most. I will agree if you are dealing with 10+ languages this can get annoying. But if there is only 3 or 4 languages being used, it is not a big deal. Your eyes can find the language you need instantly with only a few choices at the top.

however the answer to this is simple... just keep the MRU languages in sorted order.

Every language the user clicks, gets added to MRU.. and MRU is displayed in sorted order.. however the problem with this is it would require yet another setting checkbox because for many people (as should be the default), it should be a pure MRU list (not sorted)

I came here to say the same thing. I live in Malaysia and while I know a lot of Malay I often want to translate some text. It's annoying that the auto-detect rarely detects the Malay so I have to actually tell it "THIS IS MALAY! LIKE LAST TIME! LIKE EVERY OTHER ^$%# TIME! IT'S %^$# MALAY!"

And then it translates it just fine.

Having a favorite or default language seems such a no-brainer that it's actually annoying that there isn't one. Instead of being happy to have a built-in translator that avoids me having to find Google Translate, I find myself swearing at the thing.

This is not a good user experience.

I can understand it not being able to auto-detect the slang and abbreviations Malaysians use - Google Translate can only figure out most of the words too -but that's all the more reason to offer a default.

Realistically nobody is out there just casually browsing the world's websites in languages they don't know and have no relationship with. In the real world we only really want to translate the language of the new country we're living in, visiting or interested in, so the vast majority of users would benefit from being able to select a default language, at least for the duration of their holiday or whatever.
