@paaljoachim I don't know if you have noticed, but you can customize the order and visibility of the general category folders in the mail panel. I move "Custom Folders," "All Accounts" and "Mailing Lists" to the bottom to get them out of the way, and hide the "Feeds" folder because I don't use newsfeeds.

        Hey @Ayespy

I tried dragging the various category folders but that did not work in my Vivaldi Mail account.
I noticed that I can right click one of the main folders and select View and select which of the main folders are seen in the Mail account and which are not visible.
I have not figured out how to move the main folders around while in the main Mail interface.....

Ahh there it is. Going to Settings -> Mail. There is a "Mail Panel Order and Visibility" section to where one can click the up or down arrow to move the main folder categories around. This was helpful as I can move the Filter to example the top, but I still want to sort mail directly into a destination area inside an email account as it becomes closer associated with the specific email account inbox.

@paaljoachim Filtering to "folders" is an ability that will come to the client. Hard to say when. But as I largely ignore accounts, Labels works quite well for me. 😊

Good to hear that the current system works for you. I am still new and am still (call it) settling in. I notice things that I would like to see implemented for how I believe that I want the system to work so to speak.

One reason why I shared the second part in the video was to show more of how cPanel Email filter works as it also has the move message to specific folder.

Anyhow thank you for sticking around in this thread with me it is very much appreciated! Have a good night.

@paaljoachim I watched your video, so I think I have a good understanding now of what you want to achieve. I like how you call where you want emails to go 'destination point' because that opens options. However, I think that Vivaldi is lacking some (maybe minor) options to give you precisely what you are looking for:

                  • Filter actions (or rules) can be created to assign labels, but it's not possible to have a filter automatically move an email to a folder.
                  • On the other hand, you can set some view (like the INBOX for example) to hide emails from custom folders, but you cannot hide emails that carry a label.

So we have to square the circle that the Filter actions don't work with folders, and that the showing/hiding emails doesn't work with labels. Right now, I don't think there's a really good solution. But I do believe that the email dev team will sooner or later make things such that you'll be able to create the functionality you are looking for.

On a lengthy train ride I browsed through existing feature requests that are relevant in your context, and that you may be interested in and that you may want to consider voting for (by liking the first post of the respective feature request).

Feature requests to improve Vivaldi's handling of folders and filter rules

                  • Add Filter Action 'move to IMAP folder': if this were implemented, you'd be much happier.
                  • From Inbox Move to...: pretty much the same request as above with way fewer votes
                  • Advanced folder and label settings: The suggestion is to allow marking any view ("destination point") as special, and add a show/hide toggle for views that are marked special the way Vivaldi's godfather Opera Mail M2 handled things.
                  • Allowing to define any destination point as special: Quite similar to the request above, actually. I guess this proposed solution is a bit simpler to use and implement.

Feature requests regarding the structure of the Mail Panel categories

                  • Mailbox Favorites 1: Ability to reorder certain views (destination points) with the aim to filter within the unified inbox per account. This one is marked as done, which I think is not correct, and which prompted me to write the next feature request #2 here:
                  • Mailbox Favorites 2: Allowing to pin any view (destination point) as a favorite so that it gets promoted in the mail panel. Writing this one I must have missed the next request about almost the same thing which was written just a couple of days earlier:
                  • Mailbox Favorites 3: Having a panel category "favorites" and also allowing to move items within a category up and down

Feature Requests regarding where Accounts and Inboxes are supposed to show

                  • Rearranging the order of mail accounts under "All Accounts"
                  • Filter mails by account: Adding the ability to show/hide emails from any view ('destination point') based on email account. I have written a reply there that shows how different email clients place INBOX folders in the categories.

Feature requests regarding automatic contact based destination points:

                  • Pinned Contacts: A category in the mail panel for quick access to conversations with specific contacts
                  • Messenger Style Conversations: A conversation focused and modern looking way to display an email exchange like messenger apps do
                  • Conversation View: A way to make a number of emails show in a condensed list somewhat like GMail

Usually on Win11 running Vivaldi Snapshot builds. Opinionated about working efficiently with email. Folders are evil | Mail workflow: receive, read, reply, mark as read, done.

                    Thank you for sharing!

I look forward to seeing a lot of this included in Vivaldi Mail when the time is right.

                        @samikaz,

FWIW  if your email service supports filtering (usually via webmail interface) consider creating them there. The benefit of this approach is that filtering occurs on the server as messages are received and all your IMAP clients will reflect this.

thanks. I shall check that option.
