Sync custom Speed Dial thumbnails
-
Please implement synching of custom icons in Speed Dial.
-
yet another vote... pls
-
And another upvote. Honestly, Vivaldi should just make copies of your custom thumbnails instead of referring to the original files. Due to the larger amount of data to be synced, just have the user have to manually sync the thumbnails if some have been changed.
-
So, now we have synching of 'reading lists'. I can't imagine anyone using something like that in this day and age, but whatever. Now, it's time to finally add custom thumbnails to the sync. Come on, Vivaldi.
-
I would also like syncing speed dial images! Especially across PC and Android.

So silly that every machine needs to have its own speed dial bookmark images... especially when there is already a sync function.

@scottmckellam
Hi, I guess it is not to silly or hard to implement, it is more a resource problem.
I copied my customized icon setting to another system and had about 130 files to copy but only 30 MB at size.
Hm, 500000 user need a lot of space and traffic, too.If you need this you can copy:
Bookmarks
Favicons
file_mapping.json
And the Folder VivaldiThumbnailsTo a new install, it is not synced but save a lot of work.
Cheers, mib

@scottmckellam The sync "function" requires that all sync'ed data be stored on a server farm at Vivaldi. History to the beginning of time, web page images (as note attachments) and custom speed dial images are examples of kinds of data which, for "cloud" storage, would require the purchase of multiple additional physical servers. I'm not sure that's easy for Vivaldi at this stage of the game.

I have an archive of 3.82 Mbytes containing all of my custom speed dial thumbnails, start page backgrounds, theme backups, blog backup, and custom css. It is not a lot of data, but other users may have a lot more.
If I need to transfer that data to another PC, I could simply email the archive to myself, or download it from DropBox (where I keep it for offline backup).
I see that this thread is tagged as Pipeline, not as Will not do, so perhaps we will get it eventually. Meanwhile, as with most other outstanding feature requests, users should look for workarounds.
-
Mine's about 6.5 MB. I figure that to be sure all user data can fit, a safe number at the outset would be about 15TB of additional storage, just to ensure that all users could store their custom speed dial icons on sync servers. That's nothing earth-shaking, but it is a noticeable amount of additional hardware.
-
This is a feature I would really like to see implemented too.
-
I agree that this feature would be nice to have. It is extremely annoying to have differents thumbnails across devices for a same speed dial
-
@macadoum "Nice to have." Exactly.
-
@Ayespy Actually tagged as PIPELINE, so it has a slightly higher priority than NICE TO HAVE.

@Onweerwolf It is very annoying when entitled users think that their own pet issue is the most important one to be addressed, and use foul language instead of politely requesting it and waiting like most of us.
It has been clearly explained why the Vivaldi Team cannot afford to implement this feature yet — it would cost them to set up more servers and to pay for increased bandwidth. No doubt, the performance of sync for all users would take a slight hit with the increased amount of data traffic.
-
They don't need to add server space. Just gives us the option to link to our own servers and it would be fine.

Please implement this feature for us users, please.

This would be insanely helpful.

@allanmohr The title of this article says "Pipeline", which means that the Vivaldi team is already working on it, but a release date has not yet been set.
