Sync custom Speed Dial thumbnails
-
@scottmckellam The sync "function" requires that all sync'ed data be stored on a server farm at Vivaldi. History to the beginning of time, web page images (as note attachments) and custom speed dial images are examples of kinds of data which, for "cloud" storage, would require the purchase of multiple additional physical servers. I'm not sure that's easy for Vivaldi at this stage of the game.

I have an archive of 3.82 Mbytes containing all of my custom speed dial thumbnails, start page backgrounds, theme backups, blog backup, and custom css. It is not a lot of data, but other users may have a lot more.
If I need to transfer that data to another PC, I could simply email the archive to myself, or download it from DropBox (where I keep it for offline backup).
I see that this thread is tagged as Pipeline, not as Will not do, so perhaps we will get it eventually. Meanwhile, as with most other outstanding feature requests, users should look for workarounds.

Mine's about 6.5 MB. I figure that to be sure all user data can fit, a safe number at the outset would be about 15TB of additional storage, just to ensure that all users could store their custom speed dial icons on sync servers. That's nothing earth-shaking, but it is a noticeable amount of additional hardware.

This is a feature I would really like to see implemented too.
-
I agree that this feature would be nice to have. It is extremely annoying to have differents thumbnails across devices for a same speed dial
-
@macadoum "Nice to have." Exactly.
-
@Ayespy Actually tagged as PIPELINE, so it has a slightly higher priority than NICE TO HAVE.

@Onweerwolf It is very annoying when entitled users think that their own pet issue is the most important one to be addressed, and use foul language instead of politely requesting it and waiting like most of us.
It has been clearly explained why the Vivaldi Team cannot afford to implement this feature yet — it would cost them to set up more servers and to pay for increased bandwidth. No doubt, the performance of sync for all users would take a slight hit with the increased amount of data traffic.
-
They don't need to add server space. Just gives us the option to link to our own servers and it would be fine.

Please implement this feature for us users, please.
-
This would be insanely helpful.
-
@allanmohr The title of this article says "Pipeline", which means that the Vivaldi team is already working on it, but a release date has not yet been set.
-
What's your point?
-
It already does on android i know
-
It does not.
-
Maybe this should be added as the ability to use a link to online images via Google Drive, etc, for the thumbnail. Vivaldi then doesn't have to store the images on their servers.
-
@legobuilder26 That, or a button in the settings that creates an archive asking you where to save it. It would also needs another button to import and extract the archive to the right location.
No server resource consumption, and not the most inconvenient method either for the user who could use his favorite transportation method (email, usb stick, cloud, whatever), while also saving him the hassle of tracking down the data, packing it, and unpacking it himself.
I think having that tool built-in is a good compromise, and fairly simple to make.
-
Na, you can just make an archive yourself, you don't need Vivaldi for that.
We need it synced automatically, that's the whole point.
-
Making an archive yourself is a hassle, as of now, you first need to locate the profile folder you're interested in... that may take some time as the profile folder name is just a generic name with the following structure "Profile \d".
The profile name must be stored somewhere, but I have not yet found it. You see just that very first step is cumbersome and rebutting for an average user. Then regarding thumbnails, what needs to be archived is :
- ./Bookmarks
- ./Bookmarks.bak (optional)
- ./SyncedFiles/
- ./VivaldiThumbnails/
For start page background, you need to archive :
- the image you used
then you just have to set it again in vivaldi, that is the quickest manual way.
If you choose to pack the ./file_mapping.json, when unpacking it, you will need to modify the path it contains by the path to the background image you just unpacked. You see, yes you can do it yourself, but the amount of time saved by having one button to archive everything you need, saving it where you want, and another button to unpack it where it should directly inside vivaldi and making the necessary modifications :
- would be a time saver
- would not consume any precious server resources that the vivaldi team has to pay and may lack at the moment
- allow for an offline solution which sometimes might be appreciated
In fact, when I'll have a bit of time and motivation, I'll make a python script to handle this, however, how many average users will be willing to go to such length for such a thing ?
What makes speed dials attractive ? the layout for sure plays a role, but the thumbnails are what truly make it enticing. Users ending up loving and using it, if in need to have the same profile on multiple machines, will undoubtedly be disappointed, maybe even tempted to find a similar fully functioning functionality elsewhere.
I made my case to the best of my abilities, now I'm gone. Truly hope to see something on that front happening in a near future.
