Frequently Visited Sites for Start Page
-
This isn't so much a feature request that I would want, but I notice that for other users to whom I may want to recommend Vivaldi, such a feature may be missed.
Other browsers like Firefox and Chrome will show on the start page frequently visited sites, "top sites", highlights etc.
These can be a combination of sites sorted by the number of visits they have had, or outliers that the browser thinks you may wish to re-visit (I'm not entirely sure how Firefox's highlights work).
It goes without saying that any such analysis would need to be machine-local and not query a 3rd party API to determine which sites should be "top", to avoid privacy concerns.
It should also go without saying, but I will say it anyway for completeness, that such top sites shouldn't include advertisements. Especially not ads that are based on tracking history. Leaving some "defaults" in there from the start until the browser builds up a history, much like how default bookmarks work, would be undesirable but acceptable.

@LonM I never felt the need to downvote a feature, but in this case I would, if only I could
Top-Sites/Highlights are among the most annoying features of browsers. In some you can't even disable them⦠Let's just not.Furthermore we already have the "Suggestions" box at bottom of startpage, which is very similar (and also unneeded).
-
@luetage Like I said, this wasn't a feature request I would want.
But I can imagine there being some users out there whose workflows revolve around the concept of "top sites", or who maybe never learned to use bookmarks / have forgotten how. (Yes, as strange as that may sound, that is something that happens amongst some users.)
-
@LonM I understand that, but the feature request category is for features you personally would like to see, not for features you could imagine others would want. Taking an educated guess, or looking at existing but missing features of other browsers is what developers already do. Apparently Vivaldi developers want to know what we personally desire β and that's very fortunate β but our personal desires shouldn't be obfuscated by stuff others might or might not need. If somebody really wants more than the already existing Suggestions box on the startpage and in the panel, then they can write their own feature request, which has a significant advantage: They are 100% behind the request and wouldn't write in OP that they actually don't need it ^^ β and they can possibly go into more detail.

Assuming someone who is less technically minded and less inclined to visit such forums were even able to make a feature request.
But fair enough, I see your point.

@LonM I personally don't need this feature either, but one easy way to have something similar is to give the option to users to show the "new speed dial suggestions" (when we add a new item to speed dial) on the speed dial itself under a separator named "suggestions based on usage"
-
@LonM I really would like these feature too.
The best would be to be able to combine the two solutions, the Speed Dial and the most visited sites, in the same way as Firefox -
@LonM What about doing what New Tab Tools (https://github.com/darktrojan/newtabtools) does?
First they allow you to specify the grid size and then they fill blank space with most requested domains and allow you to pin stuff there if you want to keep it.
It's a kind of self-discovery for what you should put on your home page.
HINT: A useful mod would be to make these blocks smaller so that I can have more favorites on the screen at a time.

I think that if Most Visited Pages could be implemented as "virtual" bookmarks folder then it would be possible to use it as a Speed Dial also.

Using Vivaldi, I find I miss frequently visited sites being below pinned Speed Dial pages in Firefox.
This is handy because if I'm visiting a site a lot lately, it's right there on the start page on new tabs, a click away.
And if I want, in Firefox I can pin it to the start page if I think I'll continue wanting quick access. Super easy and useful. I wish it was this way in Vivaldi

@wizardling Double-click the Start Page background to see suggested sites, which you can add to the start page (i.e. pin them).
Vote for the existing request: Frequently Visited Sites for Start Page.

@pesala Oh, that's better than nothing, but still not quite what I'm after
-
Voted. As someone who's using web browser for multi-tasking and work-related, i would love to have my most frequent visited sites on the start page and new tab.

The new dashboard has a "top sites" widget you can add in 7.0
