Option to Open New Tabs in Background as Default
-
Imagine all our apps, mail, notepads, games, etc, required the 2-step right click, then left click to open process (actually 3 step process: right click, select open option from a menu, left click). Its even worse when applied to a browser because thats the most frequent activity of all, opening links. Some people dont mind 2 steps to do basic things. But when the majority of top browser developers, incl Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Edge recognize a clear preference of single click basic tasks, and have NO PROBLEM implementing it beautifully and simply with no user complaints (browser full of extra tabs, etc), then cant help laugh. The no.1 most important, most used function in a browser - opening tabs - almost seems like it was implemented as an after-thought in Vivaldi, and not worth the 'hassle' to fix. Whats even more amazing is the incredible number of tab options in the settings .. other than this one. I'd give up 99% of those myriads of options for the most important one.

It is certainly worth adding this option — at least 29 users upvoted it — however, there is a long list of things to do.

I agree. I would be great to make open links in the background a preference that one can set as a default. Great browser though. I just started using it and love it!

Right click -> Open in new tab - should be on second place in menu.
Right click -> Open in new background tab - should be on first place in menu.Or it should be configurable for user.

Oh my god. This is killing me so much. Why is it so hard to give us an option to decide if we want new tabs in background per default. I love this browser so much but I can't find myself adapting to click the second entry (open in background). Opening a tab in background should be the first entry in the context menu. Pls dear devs. PLEASE!
-
@sbik no, it should not, many prefer not opening new tab in background by default. If anything should be configurable, and I'm all for more options.

@sbik Please calm down. There is no need to shout. Just upvote the first post in this thread.
This is one of the FAQ
- Right-click, Open in New Background Tab
- Ctrl+click
- Middle-click
- Mouse Gesture, Open Link in Background Tab (Over a Link)
- Vote for Allow Editing of Menus, but I agree with iAN, the default menu should not be changed. Configuration options are the best solution in most cases. It may take longer, but will not break the workflow of existing users.

Here is a video using three of the available methods to open tabs in the background:
- GestureDown over link = 5 links in 5 seconds
- Ctrl+Click on link = 5 links in 2.70 seconds
- Right-click, Open in Background tab = 5 links in 12.30 seconds
One could shave a couple of seconds off of that last time by changing the context menu, but it would still take twice as long as the next slowest method — using a mouse gesture.
Middle-click would be the same as Ctrl+Click but would need only one hand, if you have a working MMB.
-
I have no doubt that ctrl+click is faster but like the others, I am used to a right click followed by clicking on the first option (muscle memory from chrome/firefox over 5 years).
Would love to see this is as a configurable option somewhere, thank you for all the great work in Vivaldi, I really like it.
-
@s0h4m Firefox also has Ctrl+Click and Middle-click, so failing to adopt the quicker method is without any good reason.
One cannot even claim that is easier, although slower, if you have a MMB as that can be done without touching the keyboard.

Every week or so I get notified of a new version of Vivaldi. I install it every time, hoping that this issue has been resolved. I scan through the What's New list, hoping to see a mention, but there never is one.
It's great for one browser to have a unique feature that none of the others have, if that feature enhances usability, but sadly for me this is quite the opposite.
I don't want to open every link in a new tab, I don't want to do slow clicks and I don't want to do mouse gestures. I just want it to work the way Firefox and Chrome do.
I accept that there are a lot of Vivaldi users who like it the way it is, but if you want to grow the user base, then I think you need to make it easier to use for newcomers like me who are used to the way it works elsewhere. OK, make it a user setting if that's what it takes, but unfortunately, although I like lots of Vivaldi features, it will never be my main browser until this issue is resolved.

@Gelf This thread is tagged as Pipeline, which probably means that it won't be addressed this year.
If you cannot work without this, don't waste your time checking every update. Just bookmark this thread. When it is tagged as In Progress, then it is available in the latest Snapshot. When it is tagged as Done then it is available in the latest Stable build.

@Pesala Because not everyone uses a mouse. I use a Windows laptop and a Macbook. Both I use with the touchpad only. And for both, I have to mandatorily use either the Ctrl or Cmd button while clicking.
Why is this so hard to implement? Brave is also a Chromium-based browser but they have implemented it already.
I'm a UX designer and to me, it's so obvious that from a UX perspective, this isn't great design because this is a repetitive task and though it might seem like a little thing initially, it builds friction against using the browser over tim.

Gestures may be ok if you are used to them but most people are not.
Middle-Mouse would be the best option but on high ram load 3 out of 5 times the middle-mouse does NOT work for me and 1 out of 5 it opens the tab two times so you need to multiply your time x5 for me + close an unneeded tab +wait if it did work between tries => makes it useless, my guess is between 30 and 60 secondes for successfully opening 5 links.
5 links in 2,7 secounds are impossible. retry under "normal" conditions. lean back in your chair as much as you can, make your self comfortable( for me keyboard is out of reach in this position), now start the timer, after each link get back to the starting position. 2,7 seconds per link(13,5s/5 links) are optimitic but still slower as 12,3 seconds
I would call this a basic feature which is really needed and should not be hard to implement. -
@TheCrap It's a shame your mouse is non-functional.
Middle-click is five links in 2.1 seconds here.

... and should not be hard to implement...
It never pays to guess.
-
@Ayespy Every other browser has managed to do it.
-
@Gelf It should not be hard to try with a different mouse.
