Removing write/modify access of the logged on user to the widevinecdm has seemed to stop the update of 4.10.1146.0 to any higher non-working version. I've had the browser open for over 2 hours playing Netflix and it usually updates by now to a higher version but has not done so since the permissions changes.
In case anyone cares to follow suit.
Not sure how this is going to affect overall functionality, however, since I've noticed nothing out of the ordinary and I've only change permissions on the wide-vine directory and not the whole profile directory I think I'm good.
From time to time I get this message too but a normal reload via *"F5" or a forced reload via "Ctrl +F5" always did the trick for me. My guess is that just some part loads a bit too fast or slow so another part falls back to this antique silverlight message
Hi, no problems to play Netflix and/or stream it to my old Samsung over Chromecast.
Iirc Netflix does not use Flash to play streams.
I don´t have Flash installed for a Year or something.
Since a few Chromium updates you need to activate Flash after restart the browser or even after reload the page.
@Gwen-Dragon said in Netflix WidevineCDM missing:
May be Netflix needs a faked user-agent
Fwiw, i stream NF every night, in V-SS, & it simply works for me... i do not need to try any faking etc.
I wonder if OP is using a less-common Linux distro, which has somehow interfered with the way V-SS silently goes about organising its WideVine?
Because the Netflix error message says to update widevine, I re-ran the update-widevine script, this time in a terminal, and noticed
Widevine (4.10.1196.0) is already installed and does not need to be updated
Redirecting "./libwidevinecdm.so" to "/home/spot/.local/lib/vivaldi/libwidevinecdm.so"
ln: cannot remove './libwidevinecdm.so': Permission denied
I reran the command with sudo ... and... after trying 1001 rational and irrational changes, I'm back to the default firejail profile, and Netflix works. 😑
Thanks for all the help.
P.S. presumably this script runs during install since V played Netflix videos without firejail. Weird that it had to be re-run to enable widevine with firejail.
It is necessary to run sudo /opt/vivaldi/update-widevine again after each update.
@doctorg Mysteriously enough, apparently the vivaldi issue got fixed by itself when I fixed a permission issue (somehow since today I was suddenly unable to create new folders, I'm guessing a windows update f*ed up stuff) by going into regedit --> hkey_classes_root --> folder, and changing the parameter of "(default)" from "osz_auto_file" to "folder".
When I restarted and was finally able to create new folders, I was also able to watch Netflix.
Disney+ , Amazon Prime, Netflix, TV-HD-/4K-Streaming-Anbieter, demnächst Zulu usw..

@fawzee94 It streams fine for me in WP but i don't use it there, for an ongoing longterm logistic reason; WPs don't respect/apply normal tabs' interaction with V's password storage & retrieval. It irritates me that i thus have to first open my KeePassXC pgm to fetch my NF credentials, paste them into the NF WP, then i can stream it ok. Alternatively i can load NF in a std tab & have it automagically insert my credentials. I'm a lazy cow so the latter always prevails over the former. It will be nice once WPs fully integrate with all V internal functions.
I find that an extension called User-Agent Switcher often helps where webpage functionality is missing or not working. This is the one I use:
I just tried:
$ sh vivaldi-libffmpeg-install.sh
"You should not use this script on fedora, try to install codec package chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra or similar package on your OS.
You can override this with switch -f for forced systemwide install or -u for user install."
I have the free and non-free rpmfusion repos installed but I can't find anything resembling "chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra" . . so I did the script user install and it works fine!
Thanks for that! It is much appreciated!
@ROTFL Well, you may try the shark (which is small in size) or the kazaa lite mega codec pack (which is a big collection of codecs) to see if you can use netfilx without MS codec pack.
But probably the best solution will be to use the MS feature pack which actually convert "Win10 N" to "Win10". Or the one linked here, which seems to add only the WinMedia Codecs (and H264/DRM, I hope).
About the unwanted apps - some tools or powershell commands allow their removal...but they may come again at any major update =_=
@buss Vivaldi does not ship with Widevine; it downloads it after installation and it should download automatically. If it doesn't, just go to vivaldi://components and click the "Check for update" button.
I can confirm that this works with a new/fresh Vivaldi 2.0 installation.
Also, I can't stress this enough: DO NOT downgrade to older versions of Vivaldi... and definitely DO NOT install any Vivaldi 1.x releases on macOS as a workaround for ANY issue after you have installed Vivaldi 2.0. Vivaldi releases are not backwards-compatible and downgrading will likely corrupt your Vivaldi profile and cause other problems that can be difficult to recover from.
