Sync custom Speed Dial thumbnails
-
It does not.
-
Maybe this should be added as the ability to use a link to online images via Google Drive, etc, for the thumbnail. Vivaldi then doesn't have to store the images on their servers.
-
@legobuilder26 That, or a button in the settings that creates an archive asking you where to save it. It would also needs another button to import and extract the archive to the right location.
No server resource consumption, and not the most inconvenient method either for the user who could use his favorite transportation method (email, usb stick, cloud, whatever), while also saving him the hassle of tracking down the data, packing it, and unpacking it himself.
I think having that tool built-in is a good compromise, and fairly simple to make.
-
Na, you can just make an archive yourself, you don't need Vivaldi for that.
We need it synced automatically, that's the whole point.
-
Making an archive yourself is a hassle, as of now, you first need to locate the profile folder you're interested in... that may take some time as the profile folder name is just a generic name with the following structure "Profile \d".
The profile name must be stored somewhere, but I have not yet found it. You see just that very first step is cumbersome and rebutting for an average user. Then regarding thumbnails, what needs to be archived is :
- ./Bookmarks
- ./Bookmarks.bak (optional)
- ./SyncedFiles/
- ./VivaldiThumbnails/
For start page background, you need to archive :
- the image you used
then you just have to set it again in vivaldi, that is the quickest manual way.
If you choose to pack the ./file_mapping.json, when unpacking it, you will need to modify the path it contains by the path to the background image you just unpacked. You see, yes you can do it yourself, but the amount of time saved by having one button to archive everything you need, saving it where you want, and another button to unpack it where it should directly inside vivaldi and making the necessary modifications :
- would be a time saver
- would not consume any precious server resources that the vivaldi team has to pay and may lack at the moment
- allow for an offline solution which sometimes might be appreciated
In fact, when I'll have a bit of time and motivation, I'll make a python script to handle this, however, how many average users will be willing to go to such length for such a thing ?
What makes speed dials attractive ? the layout for sure plays a role, but the thumbnails are what truly make it enticing. Users ending up loving and using it, if in need to have the same profile on multiple machines, will undoubtedly be disappointed, maybe even tempted to find a similar fully functioning functionality elsewhere.
I made my case to the best of my abilities, now I'm gone. Truly hope to see something on that front happening in a near future.

If we could just specify a url for an image that would be enough.
Vivaldi already accesses the target url to provide a thumbnail of the page. Often I will set the target to the url of the web site's logo, refresh thumbnail so that I have the logo as thumbnail, then change the target back to the "real" url. In a way I have used an image url as the thumbnail. Being able to specify a url for the thumbnail image will give it permanence and allow syncing.

Hi folks, just to give you an update on this:
โ We support thumbnail sync partially. The thumbnail status is synced (whether they are preloaded, autogenerated or custom). And the fingerprint of the custom thumbnails is synced. The final missing piece is server infrastructure to handle the actual bitmap data, which is in progress, but also part of a larger project so we are unable to give a good ETA as to when this will be 100% completed. -
That is good news!
-
@atlemo Thanks for mentioning. Right now, it makes setting up a new instance worse, because if you use the same custom thumb as the one on another instance, you have to leave speed dial (in that same tab) and come back to it for the thumb to appear. But hey - work in progress.

We can upload our custom thumbnails to imgur or vgy.me or similar, right?

Even just the added option of having a direct image URL input would be great. Just having that as an option would be better for everybody. Less storage and resources for you, less time and less future issues for us, etc.

Is there any news? I'm so tired to reapply thumbnails on new PC or after some reinstalls.
-
What about to store links to images on image-hostings likes https://imgbb.com that will be a good solution to store and sync image thumbnails.
-
@TyrionLannister The easiest solution would be not to sync them at all and to load them from a folder outside Vivaldi, just like modifications work. Setting up another install would be a nonโissue. Right now I wouldnโt use custom thumbnails, not worth the effort.
-
But that feature needs to be here!
-
@TyrionLannister Please exercise patience. This topic is also marked with โpiplineโ. This means that this requested feature is on the Vivaldi team's to do list, but no release date has been set yet.
In addition, the Vivaldi team consists of only 57 employees. For example: Vivaldi fans waited a very long time for Vivaldi for iOS and asked for it many times, but it was finally released.
-
Maybe for the moment we don't need "server infrastructure to handle the actual bitmap data" yet.
Can we just set image URLs for the thumbnails instead?
-
Just want to add that this would be really nice to have, I've got several computers/laptops and then my phone and having to manually apply all those icons is a major PITA.
So +1 on this feature.
