Won't import bookmarks from anything
-
So I started to use Vivaldi at work. I thought I'd try it at home too. I'm on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and it won't import any bookmarks. I always get a error saying Chrome is running (which it's not). When I try to get them from Opera. It will import around 50 things so it says, but does nothing. I also have way more then 50 bookmarks. Opera had no issues with importing. Vivaldi nothing, but issues. What can I try or should I just give up on it?
Thanks

@twisted8000
Hi, export your bookmarks to a HTML file in Opera, Chrome.
Import in Vivaldi choosing file.I know there are issues with importing from Opera One, for example.

Hi,

Please,
On each report add:- Vivaldi Version: |
- Since when happens: |
- OS / Version / DE

You would Export as HTML from the other Browsers and then import that file to Vivaldi.
Have you made some kind of set up, previously to the failing Import?

I do like how Vivaldi gives out false information and everyone is fine with it. Specially when it says it imports things and does nothing. More than kind of odd.

@twisted8000 Which Vivaldi? Installed how?
Which Chrome version? Installed how? -
@twisted8000 I tested Vivaldi 6.5.3206.57 on Ubuntu 22 LTS.
I was able to import in Vivaldi by File → Import from Applications and Files → Chrome from Google Chrome 121.0.6167.139.Have you checked bookmarks panel? There should be a folder with Imported… which contains the imported bookmark.
-
@DoctorG Yep mine just says close Chrome. Even if I restart it still says that, and no it doesn't start on boot. Also the import did nothing. The bookmarks are empty.

Probably you have Chrome as default, "Keep Chrome running in the background".
Check that at settings.

@DoctorG
I tested this Yesterday, no idea why it not work for the OP.
@twisted8000
Simply export your bookmarks as file in Chrome/Opera, this work from/to any browser.
You can test Vivaldi instead of getting frustrated with this import issue.Cheers, mib

@mib2berlin Hehe issue is there's a lot of tweaking one has to do. There's no file or something simple just to copy from one system to another. Everyone likes the let our servers hold all your info. Also I don't want the same bookmark from my work at home and vice versa. So sync is out of the question. I like how Vivaldi is at my work, but it seems impassible for me just to copy over settings and not the whole sync shabang.

Yes, some data files are encrypted that's why you can not copy all.
-
@DoctorG Yep needs be be one or maybe a couple files that hold all the users settings in it. Settings don't even need to be encrypted. The failing to import where Opera succeeded is more than a little disturbing, but who knows. Still trying to figure out if I should switch. With Vivaldi it seems to be more painful than what I expected.

@twisted8000
Ha, I have 3 Vivaldi accounts for a different reason but I could use it for work/private sync.
A Vivaldi team member wrote how you manually copy a profile over but as you mention it is a bit of work.By the way, I test to copy the Bookmarks file from Chrome to Vivaldi, it work.
Cheers, mib

@mib2berlin Yep as much as you like to blame me for everything I see other people have the same issues. I like the topic where someone was talking about the Opera issues. Saying a app shouldn't report false things. As in the import process saying we imported bookmarks, yet it does nothing. But everyone is fine with it.

I saw broken import from Opera One; a known issue.
VB-102846 "Import from Opera One fails" - Confirmed. -
@twisted8000
If the user have a workaround to export the bookmarks with two clicks, yes.We have a another bug report from 15/Sep/23:
VB-100086
Error importing bookmarks from Opera 15+
I confirmed it now in the bug tracker. -
@twisted8000
Just to ask, we have now mixed situations:
You mention Chrome import does not work, I test this, it work.
You mention Opera import does not work, correct.
You mention you cant copy your profile from your Vivaldi work install, you can.
If you only want to use your Opera bookmarks in Vivaldi use the solution I post three times now. -
@mib2berlin Yep I'm well aware how many times you posted things. Good job for trying to shame me and point that out. Vivaldi just seems like a pain. A semi functional pain.
