Create New Folder when Bookmarking Page
-
@pesala Would it still be a lot of work to include a button next to "delete" in the add bookmark pop-up that would trigger the bookmark panel to open and create the new folder?
I have no idea how browsers are made, so I can believe that something that seems simple might actually be a massive pain to implement.
Thanks for the reminder about the bookmark panel btw, I keep forgetting it exists for some reason despite using the other panels constantly.
If it helps anyone else in this thread, if you right-click on a folder in the bookmarks panel you're given the option to "Bookmark Active Page", which is what I've started doing after creating a new folder.
-
@Pesala How is adding one additional form field for New Folder, or even a secondary pop-up off a button for a New Folder, and creating it before saving the bookmark to it a lot of work? I understand prioritisation, but calling it a lot of work is dis-ingenious.

Without access to the source code it's difficult to say how much work something will take. Not to mention everything needs to be rigorously tested.

Selecting a folder during bookmarking is a basic browser feature. We may have the most advanced and most featured browser but it if cannot be called user friendly because a user has to open more windows just to create a new folder to bookmark a link, might categorize it as browser for the techies only and not for everyone including the newbies.
Additionally, selecting which folder to save other than the existing one should be through the collapsed root folders which can be expanded by demand for easy sorting (also a basic browser feature).
-
Bump. Need some menu like this:
@Pesala I don't quite agree with your view. Bookmarks panel cannot be easily filtered (Deleting search in bookmarks panel does not keep selected item or folder in view/focused, (VB-65976)). Since I use vivaldi more and more, I have ended up with multiple bookmarks in the main "Bookmarks" folder just because I could not add a new subfolder on creation.
-
Have the developers said anything as to why this feature is missing? Or if they any plans to implement it in the future. I have been wanting to recommend Vivaldi to some of my friends but I won't do so this bookmark feature missing
-
I've made a similar request for improving that dialog box: Collapse Folders when Adding a Bookmark. I compared it to the Firefox's implementation, where you can add a new folder, collapse folders (as @kgrace88 and @armour mentioned in this thread) etc.

They rarely comment, but it is missing because they don't have the resources to do this at the moment. The thread is not tagged as In Progress. If a request is tagged, then they are currently working on it, and we may see it this year or early next year.
If it is tagged as Pipeline, then it not being worked on, and we might not see it next year either.
There are at least two other ways to create a folder for new bookmarks so maybe that is why it has not received much attention.
-
This one doesn't make any sense, you are creating a bookmark not folder for bookmark.
I rather have ability to create folder on speed dial and drag&drop bookmark to folder.

Thanks for the information. I won't be looking for this in any future updates then

I am not sure we are even talking about the same thing. What we are talking about here is the most convenient way to bookmark a page in a new folder because a suitable folder does not already exist. So it is desirable to be able to create a new folder "on the fly" so to speak, instead of all the other work arounds, opening this panel, dragging that etc.
This is not a new concept or specific to browsers, it is an element of what they call user friendly computing

Totally wanting for this feature to be done. It is quite annoying and time consuming having to open the bookmark tab or using the side bookmark panel when all I need is a button that allows me to create a new folder right where I want to bookmark the current page.
-
@MrJulian I up-voted this feature request long ago, but honestly I've grown to find the panel superior to the popup. It supports more use cases than the popup, and I can't even remember the last time I used the popup now. If you're bookmarking lots of pages, a bookmark gets saved into the last used folder, but I find it much easier to drag & drop them all at once into the panel. Other scenarios are served equally as well by the panel, there's almost never a time now when I have the panel closed unless I'm watching a video.
-
@BoneTone I never touch the mouse unless I have to, and I don't want to have to. So your solution is only an annoyance to me. I will try it though.
-
@artpoetryfiction I also frequently work without the mouse (well technically I almost always work without a mouse, but I mean the mouse cursor, which I typically control with 4 different devices that aren't mice). When creating more than one bookmark in a new folder, another workflow I'll use is to stack the tabs, give the stack a name, then bookmark the stack from the context menu. A new bookmark folder is created with the stack name. I especially do this when I'm creating several new folders, from several stacks. All of this achievable without the mouse cursor.

OK. I have given up on folders and instead I just make all my bookmarks go to the main bookmarks folder then I do a search. It is pretty close to being the same thing.
Now I have a more urgent problem. Vivaldi is very slow to load and I cant figure out what is happening -

You should start your own thread for that issue so this one doesn't get pulled offtopic.

@Pesala thanks for this explanation! When I got to the bottom of this page I saw the label "In progress" now !!
So it looks like we have better luck now !! -

Перетаскивание, переименование, добавление папок, редактирование URL-адресов, псевдонимов и заголовков - все это легко на панели закладок.
You are not right. Show me where you can change the folder here? And why do the same work twice: first EKM Create a bookmark, then look for where it was saved, then create a folder, then drag the bookmark there, then change the name ... And why not immediately do it in the window when saving the bookmark. ?
Exactly the same problem with saving multiple tabs to bookmarks. You can not choose where to save, nor how to name it. -
I like that this request is
in progress
