Stalled download bug
-
Hi,
Just a little bug I've re-noticed - if you've got a download going to a Save As... folder and it stalls...
If you restart the download Vivaldi will send it to the default downloads folder instead of the previously chosen folder.
That's all.
Vivaldi 6.1.3035.111 (Stable channel) (64-bit)
Revision b2568a9aaecd4a7793d10fa7b389233a3b18bee8
OS Windows 10 Version 22H2 (Build 19045.3086)
JavaScript V8 11.4.183.25

@alexholver Could be caused by:
- antivirus or other security software scanning after end of download
- hidden popup (on an other deisplay or behind window) which warns about file can harm computer

@DoctorG
I think, alexholver has another issue than in your linked threads -
I am not able to reproduce.

Do you use a download extension or external download helper program?
Did the Windows "File Save As" dialog window appeared? -
I just happened to me, downloading a exe file (installer) from mega.nz, it stalled after it finished, I waited half an hour, then I stopped and deleted it.
I resorted on using Jdownloader and all went good, in few seconds. Very annoying but there is a way out: don't use Vivaldi for downloading. -
@iAN-CooG I made a bookmark to
chrome://downloads
where one can opt to keep the download. Some Chromium code is blocking certain files. -
Hi all,
No special antivirus/downloaders etc. Bog standard M$ stuff.
Generally the Vivaldi downloader is fantastic (as with everything else about Vivaldi thanks everyone:)
Vivaldi doesn't do the Confirm Download dialog bla bla thank you.
(I do have "downloadthemall" extension sitting in the background but not using it in this case -- Bring back Opera Ctrl+L show links feature!!! Sometimes you need to download a bajillion things off a page!)When I first initiated the download, yes via Save As then navigate to chosen directory. [software downloads I just Save to default D:\download, work PDFs etc I Save As to eg D:\Jobs\Client\Job...]
It then stalled (dodgy internet in PNG), Play icon/resume didn't work, so I did a right-click>Restart. Vivaldi deleted the unconfirmed.crdownload file in the chosen directory (which I had open in anticipation), but sent the newly downloaded file to the default directory.
It has happened a few times over the whiles.
Maybe it's a bug in Chrome that Vivaldi isn't trapping properly?
Or Vivaldi not telling Chrome to send to the correct folder on restart?
I dunno, I'm an audio/visual tech not a programmer!Alex

@alexholver Hi - It would help if you gave some examples of download that "Stall".
When you get these "stalled" downloads, do they look like this?
If you then go to
chrome://downloads
do you see this?I suspect that's what's going on. Maybe internet in PNG is dodgy but this seems more likely, others were hinting about it above. Vivaldi fails to give users a dialog to keep or remove such "dangerous" downloads, and it's becoming a big problem confusing users to no end...
I just tested, and you're right in that if a download is restarted, it wil download in the default directory and not the one chosen by SaveAs. But I suspect this is a Chromium issue, not in Vivaldi.

I can confirm this for 6.2.3077.3 Win 11.
I try to downloadhttps://github.com/macchrome/winchrome/releases/download/v115.5790.131-M115.0.5790.131-r1148114-Win64/ungoogled-chromium-115.0.5790.131-1_Win64.7z
and the download never ends. I do not get the file warning popup about dangerous file.But download works in 6.1 Stable.

I asked about that feature in Opera last year (https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/75369/display-web-page-links), and I was certain that someone told me about the Link Grabber extension. Apparently, that reply was deleted.

@iAN-CooG You have disabled Browser Windows in Portal at vivaldi://experiments? Then all works nice.
-
@DoctorG That solved the issue: after checking it, now the "this file could harm blahblah" requester appears so I can keep it and the download finished regularly.
I'll keep the setting for now. I must have missed what it's for, btw
