Solved Sync Workspaces
-
@Blindheit I completely agree.
The workspaces feature MUST be sync'ed between devices for it to actually be useful. Otherwise we have to maintain these manually between devices, thereby introducing more work.
-
I would even go so far as to say that without syncing the workspaces, Vivaldi is just another browser. It's a nice browser, but one that at its core doesn't offer me much more than the ones I already have.
WITH sync - you enable a cross-device productivity gain none of the other browsers have, and THEN I'll be married to this browser!
It's time that we start seeing the browser as a work-tool, with all the organizational features that come with that.
-
How hard would it be for someone to write a plugin to utilise the "bin" as a method to sync workspaces across devices, while we wait for official feature? If that is even possible of course.
-
Lack of tab syncing in Vivaldi workspaces is a major hindrance to seamless cross-device browsing. It's essential that we're able to access our tabs across different computers, and without this feature, we're missing out on the full potential of the browser. It would be highly beneficial to have tab syncing in Vivaldi workspaces to improve our browsing experience.

Sync of workspaces is must have feature. Hard to work without it.
-
@ermakovmaxim In mobile version i will also glad to see same functionality. Divide tabs per workspace give a huge performance for work.
-
This feature is needed, i switch between 2 laptops and it is too much work to keep my workspaces synced manually. hopefully this feature is prioritized, until then i need to look elsewhere

Hello, Jay from Learn Linux TV here! If you're not familiar with me, my YouTube channel sees almost a million views a month, and around 650,000 subscribers.
I'm currently in the process of producing a video that goes over the pros and cons of each of the popular browsers on Linux. Of course, Vivaldi is on my list and will have a segment in this video when it uploads late June.
That said, the fact that Vivaldi doesn't sync workspaces effectively is an absolutely embarrassing oversight. I mean absolutely no offense to anyone when I say this and I know this sounds harsh - but it's true.
The main reason for this, is because regardless of whether or not someone feels this feature is necessary (or even useful) Vivaldi's competition is already doing this. (Edge and Safari, for example). In order to stay competitive in the market, this feature really does need to be a priority.
One of my biggest points of frustration on this, is the mindset that "Vivaldi syncs tabs already". It absolutely doesn't. It does list tabs open on other devices, but that literally doesn't fit the definition of sync. If I create a workspace on one Vivaldi instance, all other computers with Vivaldi installed should then sync the fact that workspace was created. If I open a tab in an existing workspace, it needs to automatically be open in that same workspace on every device. If I close a tab on a device, it should close on every device. This is the way it works with Vivaldi's competition, and anything less wouldn't cut it.
I would love for a chance to mention in the Vivaldi segment of my video (which will see hundreds of thousands of views) that Vivaldi also competes when it comes to this feature. (As opposed from including this in my list of cons). I suppose I can always just say that Vivaldi's developers are working on it and the feature is coming soon, and still list it as a pro - but I can't assume Vivaldi will do it right until I get a chance to see it.
Also, to be fair, there's a few other browsers that do a terrible job of workspace syncing like Vivaldi currently does. But with some of the most popular browsers in existence going this direction - it's only a matter of time before all other browsers have this nailed down. I give it two years, tops.

@jlacroix Workspaces are relatively new in Vivaldi.
They were first introduced in April 2023, and this topic was opened shortly afterwards. It is now the top most voted for request.
However, the Vivaldi Team is small, so it takes time to implement a major feature like this. Sync between multiple Operating Systems, also requires server space. It is unreasonable to compare Vivaldi to Edge, Safari, Opera, or other browsers with many more developers.
This is certainly not an oversight, but just one of hundreds of things to be done, some of which have been waiting for far longer, e.g. Multi-account Containers or Drag and Drop in Downloads Panel.
The PIPELINE tag, means that they want to do it, but do not currently have anyone actively working on it.
-
Seems like syncing mobile would be a later feature.
Just splitting up synced tabs by their workspace would be nice between different desktops. I have Vivaldi on the laptop and mini PC and it would be nice to see that hierarchy within the Synced Tabs section.

@Pesala
Sorry, but this whole post sounds like copium to me.@Pesala said in Sync Workspaces:

Ignoring the most voted request even if other features have been waiting far longer is just bad prioritization in my opinion.

But what I can do is compare Vivaldi, including its size and team, with the Arc Browser and the Browser Company. Both relatively small, and the latter even with a smaller Market share. 10x better syncing feature is part of the Arc browser. Restructuring the Tab sync to keep the workspaces in mind should not increase the "server space" requirements. Done right, this should be nothing more than a label. This should not be a "major feature".

On chrome, group sync is already working. When the appropriate flag is enabled, it also synchronizes the chrome browser on android. As much as I dislike this browser, this functionality currently forces me to use it.
-
@Slavco microsoft was first with that on Edge... it's on for months. It has auto-arrangement of the tabs into groups, syncing of workspaces and tab groups, even option to share workspace to another person.
-
@vyrgozunqk Thanks for the reply !
Yes, I agree. I am currently testing this functionality on several PCs, unfortunately it does not yet support Android.Chrome can synchronize with Android, and this is the device I always have with me, so I really appreciate this functionality.

@1n2Flow
Implementing this isn't simply a label.
There's functionality of opening the saved workspaces.
Auto syncing between devices and handling discrepancies per device.
You do not understand what implementing this the right way will take.This is a free browser. With no Investors.
Unlike Arc...
And with many more features than many other browsers including Arc.Patience.

+1 to Workspace and Web Panel syncing.. I found this thread while searching on how to sync workspaces. I travel a lot and I find myself with unfinished work on my PC with multiple tabs opened in a workspace then having to manually re-open them in my laptop.
P.S. This does not reduce the love I feel towards the browser and certainly has no effect on the huge appreciation on the work of the team!
All the best team!.

I don't mind the contents of the workspace not synced, but at least would like to not have to re-create workspaces across machine so they are labeled the same and have the same icon
-
@miliano I have noticed that too when restoring tabs via sync: Tabs restore to their respective workspaces, but the workspaces themselves are not labeled, nor have the emoji/icon assigned in the source browser.
I still use Vivaldi for core browsing but moved 2 of my Vivaldi workspaces to Edge. I work between two locations on two different machines and my work has to follow me wherever I go.

I am in the same position and although I like Vivaldi, I had to leave for now till it has proper sync of workspaces.

It's the same for me. I love Vivaldi but without this functionality, I will have to keep using Arc instead.
