Slow Start Up After Last Update On Zorin OS
-
A few days ago I had an update on Zorin 16.2 Pro of Vivaldi 5.6 ..... since then it takes over a minute to open Vivaldi where as before it took only seconds ..... nothing else has changed .... once opened all web pages ... downloads etc appear and load normally ....
I use a VPN but that has not updated and my Mbps has not changed and YouTube loads just fine ......
I read somewhere that there was a new security check having to do with hardware verification or something like that ..... could this be the problem ?????
Thanks for any and all help .....

@hdmule I've had this issue for a few months now. I'm on the snapshot channel. I'm not sure exactly which snapshot version it started with. It can take upwards to 2 minutes for Vivaldi to become functional on a cold boot.
Vivaldi will start, and the tabs and interface will appear. But it is generally frozen. Speed Dial will show up, but it will just be a blank page without any Speed Dial icons. None of the Speed Dial folders show up on the top bar, only the 'Bookmarks', 'History', 'Notes' and 'Calendar' headings show up, but they can't be clicked on.
After about two minutes I will get notifications of any new emails and then all the Speed Dial icons will populate and the browser works fine.
If I close the browser and open it again, it starts up quickly. It seems it only happens after rebooting my computer. Although I haven't really checked if it happens if I close Vivaldi, wait a long time (like 30 minutes or so) and then open Vivaldi again.
I think the issue has to do with History. If I move the file ~/.config/vivaldi-snapshot/Default/History, then Vivaldi starts quickly. I also tested moving my bookmarks file (since the bookmarks are what take a long time to populate) and it didn't make a difference.
My history file is huge. It's 564MB. I don't think I've ever deleted my history. I assume deleting my history would be an easy workaround, but either way it's an issue in Vivaldi.
I filed a bug report on this: VB-92450

I never in more than a year had a problem with Vivaldi opening slow but we had an update a few days ago to Ver. 5.6.2867.46 and now anytime Vivaldi is closed and reopened it takes over a minute ..... I have my History deleted automatically each day so I'm sure it isn't that .....
I've been using Vivaldi for much longer on Win 10 but just switched to Linux about 14 months ago .... thanks for your suggestions .... hopefully in future updates the problem will be solved ....

Hi,
There was a minor update today.
Check whether fixes the problem or follow the next steps. No it didn't seem to help ..... I just shut off Vivaldi a few minutes ago and it took longer than a minute to restart ..... you can open and immediately close the browser and it will still be delayed in reopening .....
Maybe in a future update it might get fixed ....

Hi, I cant reproduce it on my systems but I use Opensuse Linux. Vivaldi start in < 1 second.
Test this with a clean new profile, after create the profile close all tabs, don´t change anything.
This can happen if an extension does not work correctly or the profile is broken. You will know with the second profile.https://help.vivaldi.com/desktop/tools/user-profiles/
Cheers, mib

@mib2berlin Thanks for the info I will not loose any of my bookmarks or passwords will I ????? .....

@hdmule
No, you create a second profile your default profile is untouched.
Some user have several for Home, Work, Fun, there are independent.
Remember to close all tabs on the new profile, don´t change or install anything, just test.
At next start of Vivaldi you get a window for choosing your default profile or the new one.Cheers, mib
