Condensed Context Menus
-
I feel like the context menus are getting too long and hard to navigate. Especially with this new “less or more” welcome page, there should be a condensed option. Here are some ideas to condense them:
-
Remove redundancies (ex: for the active tab, reload shouldn’t be shown in context menu unless reload button is hidden)
-
Tab Stacks: the tab stack context menu contains options for the current active tab in the stack, like “Reload.” In condensed mode, take these out!
-
Add a tab bar button: a button next to trash in tab bar. Options like “bookmark all” and “save tabs as session” should go there instead of in context menus. The button can also have an option to switch from vertical to horizontal tabs.
-
Buttons in status bar: All hibernation options can be moved to a status bar button, for example.
-
Simply take stuff out: If the user has opted for condensed menus, some less necessary options may simply go away (they can still be achieved through shortcuts, quick commands, and other ways)
-

@code3 Agreed they are getting longer and longer every major update
-
@hololoyoj Yes, and I think Opera 12 had a condensed option. Would you like to upvote the feature request?

I would prefer 2nd column option solution. I think it's call Line Break in Opera 12, which allow user to cut menu into 2 columns by insert special character into menu.
example: linked image will have both link & image menu which make it too long/tall thus currently they hide the image menu in submenu. This make access to image menu very slow, because we have to wait for the submenu to appear...
A better way to solved this problem is put image menu in 2nd column & allow user to access both link + other command in first column, then also have instant access to image menu in 2nd column in plainview.
something like this:
-
@dude99 That would be good as well, but even so, I would still want an option to have less context menu options, some context menus have like 50 items, two columns wouldn’t make that better.
-
@code3 But we can already edit most of the context menu items...
Wait, are you talking about 2nd menu setup like Opera 12 where default context menu come with both compact & classic profile, & then user can make new custom setup from those default setup?
-
@code3 Well, i just did
-
@dude99 Yeah, we can edit context menus, but I am talking about two default setups, full and compact. This could also go along with the “how much Vivaldi do you want?” welcome screen.
-
@code3 Sounds like Opera 12 then, but we need to vote for which commands are consider important by most & which commands that need to be hidden away for compact mode. Because everyone setup & needs are very different.
It might sounds unfair to the minority, but majority matter more in this case, because it's pointless to provide a compact setup that most people don't need.
I vote for your idea, although I don't agree with some of 'em. But it should be a good start to trim down the bloated context menu.
-
@dude99 What menu options would you take out? What are most important?
-
I've been hoping for a browser with customisable context menus for years. They are a terror to the eyes in many browsers, nowadays, with too many options and they are lacking icons & size configuration.

One should be able to customise it to fit personal use. Enable-disable/add-remove functions. Not everyone uses the context menu to go back, e.g. This is barbaric in the 21st century, that they are not user configurable. Thankfully, Vivaldi is speeding up browser UI evolution, which was unbelievably stagnant for 20 years.

Linked to Show icons in context menu since we can use icons (as smaller interface than its text) as interface for function variations.

One already can. Go to Settings, Appearance, Menu Customization. Choose the menu to customise in the drop list, and add/remove items as you wish. Nearly all context menus are now customisable, with a few exceptions.
Below are my customised menus for the page and for selected text.
