Ability to drag and drop an URL into the Bookmark Bar folders and subfolders
-
Hi,
To my immense regret, I saw that this Drag Configurable Bookmarks Bar Folder menus thread seemed to have been closed without being complete. Even though we can drag the address to a random folder in the bookmark bar, we can't navigate in that said folder to drop it in a subfolder wherever we want.
What I would ask is to be able to navigate wherever we want in the bookmark bar folders while dragging the link and create a bookmark when dropping it, just like we can in most other Browsers like Brave, Chrome, Firefox etc. Also, when we drag and drop the link from the address bar into a bookmark folder (even when we use the bookmarks in panel instead of bookmark bar, that doesn't change anything), it doesn't create an ACTUAL bookmark, i don't know why. It just puts the link there, but it's not considered as a bookmark in the address bar : the little "add Bookmark" flag on right of url bar isn't toggled on like when after we create a bookmark the usual way. So if we use the drag and drop to create a bookmark and come back some times after on the very same URL, we don't see the URL marked as bookmark and we might bookmark it again, and again, and again. We have no way to know which url is bookmarked and which is not with the drag and drop method, and after awhile it really gets out of hands. In chrome, it does create an actual bookmark (the little star gets filled) as soon as we drag and drop on the folder (or subfolder) we want.
Thank you for all your work and attention to our requests. I've just discovered Vivaldi recently, but except from those two very annoying issues, I really enjoy using it and I'm most likely here to stay.

Click the icon/shield in the address bar to the left of the URL and drag that, not the text. That works to create bookmarks in the panel, bookmarks bar, and probably a tiled tab with the bookmarks manager but I don't really use that workflow and am not at my desk to test right now.
-
@Daladdine You are correct, some parts of the original feature request are not complete, but you should be dragging the Badge in the URL field to create a new bookmark, not the text.
- One can drag existing bookmarks in any Bookmarks Bar folder to change its position in that folder
- One can drag existing bookmarks in any folder and drop it onto the Bookmarks Bar to create a new bookmark on the Bookmarmks Bar, but the original bookmark remains in the original folder. I think that bug has already been reported.
- One can Drag the badge to create a new bookmark in any folder on the Bookmarks Bar. From there, one can drag the new bookmark and drop it into any subfolder.
I suggest testing a bit more and editing your post and thread title to make it a new request for Add Bookmarks to Bookmark Bar Folders with Drag and Drop
Then we need another request for Allow Dragging of Bookmarks Between Folders on the Bookmarks Bar
Both of these are already available if using the Bookmarks Panel.

@Pesala @BoneTone ooh... the badge. Sneaky. Indeed that works. Thanks. I don't think many users would have guessed it by themselves though. I noticed that many of those little tips are not very intuitive for common users like me and should probably be explained better by Vivaldi whenever we install it for the first time, or have their own category in parameters. Listing all those tips, that may be obvious for you but not for most, in an accessible and visible way would be a good idea to appeal to more people. The whole huge customization part (which i like) is already enough to deter many people from using the browser, no need to add some obscure tips like those.
But aside from that, most of the issues remain, sadly.
Most of what you explained to me @Pesala appear like semi implementation of what other browsers have. I did understand what i could do with them, that's precisely issue i'm raising. They do what other browsers do, but only until a certain point. That's why i had that feeling of having "incomplete" features, more than "lacking" features. Once we get to able to drag bookmarks in the bookmark bar, the first instinctive thing we want to do is to navigate into the bookmark folders and subfolders to decide where to exactly put them. But here, we can't. Being stuck on the surface is a bit frustrating, especially when coming form Brave, Chrome, Firefox etc.
Then could I regroup your two requests into one since, to me, they feel like they should go together? (it would be really weird to have one without the other)
For example, Allow the dragging of pre-existing bookmarks and the url into folders and subfolders of the Bookmark Bar (dragging url would create a bookmark, dragging pre-existing bookrmark would move the bookmark). Exact chrome replica in terms of bookmarking method, no more no less. How is that? And btw, being able to drag and drop the whole url instead of the badge/icon of the address bar would make the whole process much easier, and hope it will be done also at some point but it's no big deal for now.
-
@Daladdine One request is about organising existing folders, the other is about adding new bookmarks.
- One can already drag and drop bookmarks within a folder to move it any subfolder, from a subfolder to its parent folder, or from one subfolder to another. What one cannot do yet, is drag a bookmark from one folder to another.
- One can already drag the text from the URL field and drop it on a Bookmarks Bar folder.
Please do some thorough testing, then edit your first post to make it valid. I think adding a bookmark by Drag&Drop would be best in a new thread. There is already Add Active Tab to any folder or subfolder, so some users may not need that, though they may want easier organisation without opening the side panel.
-
@Pesala Oh yes, you're right, the drag and drop of bookmarks within the same folder/subfolder seem to be totally the same than on the other browsers. When i got stuck from being unable to move a bookmark within a folder to another one, i somehow assumed moving bookmarks at all was limited.
So the only real issue is to not being able to drag and drop the url in subfolders
Actually, when reading my first post, I realize that i never requested for that to begin with. I reread the thread, and you were the one who brought up "Allow Dragging of Bookmarks Between Folders on the Bookmarks Bar" and I integrated it into my initial request.I agree, my title for this thread is a mess and I may not use the best words to express myself (i'm going to edit it), but if you read my initial request there is only one thing i ask for : Being able to Drag and drop URL text into the folders and subfolders of the bookmark bar. That's all.
My "second" request/complaint was that when we do drag and drop url text in folder it creates a link into the folder as it was a bookmark but doesn't create an actual bookmark (no flag indication on the right of url bar). But you both told me to use the badge/icon instead of grabbing the url text. So this is "solved" in a way. Probably should make a request to be able to grab url text as well, but that's another story. So the exact corrected request would be the same only by replacing "URL text" by "Site info/badge icon" "Being able to Drag and drop Site info/badge icon (of URL bar) into the folders AND subfolders of the bookmark bar to create a bookmark of the current url". There you go, took me some time, but i finally spit it out.

Less error prone than dragging & dropping from the address bar would be to right click in the spot that you want to add the new bookmark of the current page, and then select a menu item to create the bookmark. This is actually possible in Vivaldi right now:
- To create a bookmark on the bookmarks bar: right-click anywhere on the bookmarks bar.
- To create a bookmark inside a folder that is on the bookmarks bar: right-click inside that folder (but not on a subfolder).
- To create a bookmark in a subfolder in the tree of folders in the bookmarks bar: right-click on or inside that folder.
I think some people would find it useful to be able to drag & drop to the bookmarks bar to create bookmarks. I also think those people would (should) change their workflow to right-click on the location in the tree of the bookmarks bar when they realize it's both less work and less error prone.

Indeed, if one knows about this method it is much more efficient. I don't create bookmarks very often, and usually use D&D to the Bookmarks Panel, but this is easier.
The only problem is that it is not as easy to discover as D&D. Do other browsers like Opera/Chrome/Edge have this?

I have read the excellent well-written responses in this comment thread. However I am on 3.1.1929.48 (Stable channel) (64-bit) and I still dont see easy Drag+Drop functionality when it comes to Sub Folders
This works
Dragging the URL onto Bookmarks Bar and releasing it directly into a Folder
This does not
- Dragging the URL to Bookmarks Bar, hovering on the main Folder, waiting for it to expand
and then releasing into a Subfolder. - Dragging the URL to Bookmarks Bar, hovering on the main Folder, waiting for it to expand,
hovering over the Sub Folder waiting for that to expand & releasing the Bookmark.
Chrome makes this so easy. As you drag the Bookmark onto the main Folder it pops out, when you drag to subfolder that pops out as well and you release the mouse button. Done. Im sticking with Vivaldi but the lack of this small feature is an annoyance in a great browser.

@DV20Katana said in Drag and drop the URL in Bookmark Bar folders AND subfolders menus, and tranform the link into an ACTUAL bookmark:
Dragging the URL
Dragging the URL doesn't work to create bookmarks anywhere in Vivaldi, as far as I'm aware. You need to click on the badge/icon to the left of the URL in the address field and drag that. For example, you cannot D&D the URL into the Bookmarks Panel to create a bookmark, you must drag the badge/icon.
That said, as I pointed out in my previous post in this thread, D&D can be an error prone method for creating bookmarks anywhere. As soon as the mouse up event gets sent to the system, the bookmark gets created in whatever folder the cursor was over when the event is sent.
Such as when the user's hand twitches, too bad, you've got to clean up that mistake and create the bookmark in the correct folder still. Sometimes the mouse up event gets sent even without the user lifting the button; sometimes the event doesn't get sent when the user lifts the button; these are both more common errors with wireless and low quality mice.
Using the context menu to create bookmarks in the Bookmark Bar, the user is given the opportunity to verify the correct location is chosen before committing the creation of the bookmark. If the hand twitches and right-clicks on the wrong spot, the user just cancels out of the menu, and tries again -- there's no extraneous bookmark that needs to be removed.
I think some people would find it useful to be able to drag & drop to the bookmarks bar to create bookmarks. I also think those people would (should) change their workflow to right-click on the location in the tree of the bookmarks bar when they realize it's both less work and less error prone.

It works fine in Windows, whether dragging the selected URL or the badge. Dropping into the Bookmark Panel lets the user save it anywhere, with the desired folder expansion behaviour.
On the Bookmark Bar one can only drop it directly onto the bar (creating a bookmark with URL name instead of the Page Title), or onto a folder, creating a bookmark at the top of the folder. There is no auto-expand on hover.
I am glad that you agree with Bonetone
people should be willing to adapt their workflow, otherwise they will never be happy.
-
@Pesala Huh, I recall so many conversations about needing to grab the badge to create bookmarks. The same thing happens in the panel though, where the title of the bookmarks is the address if you grab the URL instead of the badge though.
However, now I'm even more confused by @DV20Katana's post... when I D&D either the URL or the badge and hover a folder on the bar, it never opens. So I couldn't try to reproduce either of the scenarios described. Eh, right-clicking works, is faster & less prone to error, so I'm not worried.
-
@BoneTone Dragging the URL does create a valid bookmark, but its name is the URL, not the Page Title. It is the same on the Bookmark Bar or in the Panel.
I prefer to use the Panel, but right-click on a Bookmark Bar folder is perhaps more efficient.

That's what I just said...

Thanks for your reply, I understand this is not a make-or break feature, it was just something I had gotten used to in Chrome and old habits die hard. The Bookmarks Panel has the auto pop-out and I was missing that in the Bar

I agree, I will learn to use a new workflow in Vivaldi. Admittedly I do find the Bookmarks Panel very busy and a little clunky to use vs the Bar but the more I use it the faster I'll get. Will also experiment with using other methods.

I believe there is a mod to make the bookmarks bar have auto-hide functionality. If you're not familiar with it already, give the Modifications category a browse. I don't really like autohide functionality, so I just use keyboard shortcuts & mouse gestures to hide/show various elements of the UI when I want to use them or reclaim the space. There are a ton of actions, far more than most if not all other browsers, that can have whatever keyboard shortcuts or mouse gestures assigned to them in the settings.
There are a few mods, however, that might be exactly what you want. Give them a look and try them out, mods aren't difficult to install, just read the pinned thread in the category.
Auto hide bookmark bar ※
Autohide address bar transition
Addressbar top autohide bookmarks※ I haven't used or even really looked into these mods, but I'd start with this one probably.

I find the Bookmarks Panel to be fundamental to my bookmark management workflow, and part of what makes Vivaldi superior to other browsers for that task. With the Bookmarks Manager in a tab & the Bookmarks Panel open, I've got two independent views into my bookmarks library which can be scrolled to different locations with different parts of the treeview expanded, different searches, etc.
You can customize the panel to make it cleaner of course. You may not realize that the bookmark details pane at the bottom of the panel can be resized & even hidden simply by dragging the dividing bar between it and the treeview. Just be aware that if you completely hide it, when you create a new folder it will not automatically be in a state where you can edit the folders name simply by typing -- that only happens if you have enough of the details pane displayed to see the title. It's not a problem, it just means you need to hit the edit keyboard shortcut (F2) before typing the new folder's name, but something to be aware of to avoid confusion.
Aside from that, I actually find the panel to be less busy than the manager. But everything is highly configurable: you can get rid of columns you don't want in the manager with a right-click, things that aren't directly exposed through options & menus can usually be changed through a mod. I used to mod the panel a bit until Vivaldi made what I was doing possible through the UI.
Just an additional, somewhat related thought. Modern displays are typically widescreen, while the content we consume is portrait in orientation, and extremely tall portrait dimensions when you scroll. Vertical screen real estate is a premium because of this, while horizontal real estate is often wasted. I typically hide the Bookmarks Bar (and some other toolbars) to reclaim the real estate for the content, and put my tabs bar on the left & panel on the right making use of otherwise wasted space. You can still have a persistent view into you bookmarks that way, and having the tabs & panel on opposite sides helps to center the content on screen.
Hope all that helps.
Happy Surfing,
BoneTone -
When I drag and drop the shield icon (left of the lock icon which is left of the url text) nothing happens, If I use the lock icon a bookmark is created. Is the information in this thread outdated?
I also would like to see direct placements in subfolders because that is the way I am used to organize bookmarks (firefox guy looking around what happened in the browser marked)
-
@RonSchild No, the bug still exists. Dragging a bookmark from a bookmark bar folder and dropping it onto the bookmark bar still leaves behind the bookmark and creates a new one with the URL for the title.
