Switch to disable picture-in-picture / video popout icon
-
Please give us the option to remove this damn icon, it is sooo irritating.
Thank you.

@Gwen-Dragon which is pretty much on all videos as most of videos on net are autoplay.
I re-iterate again, the feature has its uses, but forcing it on users is not right.
The issue (beside not being to turn it off) is what I and others as well reported - the icon is invasive and often does not disappear on fullscreen and/or reappears on fullscreen.
I watch youtube on my 2nd monitor most of the day and whst used to be simple process of:
click play,
go fullscreen,
enjoyhas now become:
click play,
go fullscreen,
wait till the youtube ui disappears and pray the Vivaldi PiP button decides it's time to hide too,
watch the youtube ui disappear as the PiP buton shines in top middle of the screen,
click inside the video to make youtube ui reappear which also pauses the video,
click again to unpause the video and pray the PiP button will disappear this time with the youtube ui,
try to enjoy despite the hoops I was made to jump through. -
Same here. Button disappears in full screen initially, but it appears when I move my mouse and then won't go away. I'm forced to close/start fullscreen to make it disappear again. I'm a fan of the video pop out feature. The double right-click, which sometimes conflicted with other context menus, was a bit annoying. Having a dedicated button sounds useful to me, but it should have been shipped with an option to disable it. I'm rarely watching videos outside of YT, but I can imagine how annoying it could be on other websites/gifs etc. I'm assuming that it will be fixed, but I do find it worrying that a bug was introduced to YouTube/video consumption that doesn't exist in other browsers. Anything you guys are doing on top of existing experiences should be optional IMHO. Looking forward to seeing more options for this feature. It's now an annoyance, but I'm sure it will turn out to be very useful when it's fixed.

@fledgling well said well said. totally agree
-
I've got a black screen sometimes after the update, so it would be good to have an option to completely disable pop-out feature.
-
Last night my wife - who doesn't follow these forums or take any interest in Vivaldi developments - commented on this new annoying thing she keeps seeing in videos (and could I disable it for her)...
-
I'm both amazed and disappointed that this wasn't fixed within 24 hours.

Same. It's really baffling why this feature was forced on us without having an option to disable it.
-
...for what it's worth, I've used this feature a few times without incident, and I like that it exists (and not as an extension). I don't think I'd want it removed entirely.
But of course - agreed - it shouldn't cause anyone problems.

@Inclement An option to disable it is what is requested. It was clearly wanted by some users, but not by most I suspect.
- Another way would be to disable it when a video is played, or just hide after a few seconds, which it already does when it works as intended. However, that behaviour is buggy. If the cursor is moved away, then back again, the icon reappears, but does not disappear until you move the cursor again.
- The icon also appears in fullscreen mode, but does nothing.
- The player goes black on a secondary monitor in PiP mode.
Fix the bugs first, then add an option to disable it entirely. Leaving it enabled by default helps with discoverability, but a tooltip is needed to say what the icon does.

Couldn't agree less. For now I am on this build but the whole icon is so distracting. Other users already did go back to a previous build where it was not present and I am inclined to do the same against my better judgement. This thing is just invasive.
Since it was already a feature without the button, I suggest disabling it all together, make improvements, resolve the bugs, make it an optional feature and then implement it.
As for wanting it or not: in just 10 days, 120 votes were given, surpassing even the the vote to disable auto-play of videos. Also in the Snapshot where this was introduced, there were enough mentions to have an option to disable this thing. Hope they do it sooner then later -
@Menno555 Without the button it was difficult to access. Right-click twice on a YouTube video is hardly user-friendly even if you know it is there; much less so if you don't.
If the icon always disappeared after a few seconds I doubt if people would be so annoyed by it. They don't complain about the media controls, after all.
Some who replied just want to hide the button in fullscreen mode (where it currently does nothing at all). That is also the main issue for me. I have no use for PiP, and usually watch videos in fullscreen on my secondary monitor.
Some patience would not go amiss.

The devs have continued working on the PiP feature, so improvements will come.

@Pesala
Media controls are useful, essential. PIP is not, it is un-useful and annoying for a lot of people, even when it disappears after a few seconds.
But agreed: they are working on it. Till then I am switching back to previous build. I have patience but the whole PIP is utterly useless and irritating -
yeah, forcing features like that reeks of malware extensions from IE activex era. "don't think, just ship it" mindset overall reminds me of google stadia fiasco where stubbornness and overconfidence lead to a trainwreck that could've been avoided easily.

@sammael
No it is, indeed, "Ridiculous"!! — BEYOND Ridiculous ! !!!
Bizarre, EXTREMELY Annoying, and — BEYOND RIDICULOUS that this is not Disablable!!! -
@Chuck7 If someone uses Picture-in-Picture (I don't), then the icon is useful (it saves having to right-click twice on a video, then select Picture-in-Picture from the context menu).
If someone does not use PiP, the icon is an annoyance until it fades away or unless you move the cursor to the corner or to another monitor when in fullscreen mode.

well, at least I found easier ways to hide it in fullscreen YT. First method only works on ultrawide monitors. The icon disappears when you move the mouse outside of the video. It also disappears when I leave my mouse on the bar at the bottom holding the other buttons.
That menu bar in YT is the ideal spot for this button, left of the button for settings. Why not show it on top of that bar and make it fully transparent? I'm not a developer, but I would assume that it's possible to select a different spot based on the website someone is visiting. The UI for websites like YT doesn't change that often. The button is already following the same logic (believe it's pretty much universal). This would allow you to select the perfect spot/size for the most popular websites containing videos (e.g. make it smaller for websites with small previews). Would also consider changing the icon, it's identical to the existing Miniplayer icon on YT. Maybe remove the border between the square and the borders on the icon (i.e. it goes beyond the tab)?
The bug is annoying, but the position on YT videos is annoying as well. It's adding a "top center" control while we already have "bottom left" and "bottom right". I'm just thinking of what you could do to prevent everyone from disabling it as soon as they get that option. Maybe something like this would help. I'm on an ultrawide and love this feature because it allows me to move the video between virtual desktops on Win10 without design overhead from the browser. This also allows me to show the video on top of my game (borderless fullscreen). I'm already hooked, but I can imagine that it's less useful for people that use an external monitor/TV to watch videos.

+1 for an option to disable this please.
-
At first I was like "Oh cool, no idea who this may be for, but lemme just quickly disable this because I've never used P-in-P..."...
And then I've realised that they promptly f o r g o t to add the disable switch.

I love vivaldi but this is the dumbest thing they have done so far, as other have said it is unthinkable to introduce such an invasive button that does not disappear and can not be disabled. QA team have failed on this one i'm afraid, they should push out a fix to stable branch ASAP!
