Switch to disable picture-in-picture / video popout icon
-
@hsof
It may not be the part of the shadow DOM of the<video>
element, but still, there is a code segment, which can be ignored, if a certain switch is turned off. -
@Ayespy
An official statement from the developers would have been the minimum, regarding this issue. No offense, it's not against you and the other moderators, but Vivaldi used to be known as a user friendly company. This issue has had one of the most intense feedback since the release of the very first build, and yet, three weeks has passed, and still no communication. -
@Nekomajin Yes, I was interested on identifying the code but the sources do not seem to be publicly available yet. Now, regarding the switch, my suspicion is that this was implemented inside a module that, maybe, is not regarded as "part of the browser" as much as "external-ish isolated os-dependent media player quasi-application" that maybe does not share the same API that lets exposing encapsulated variables to the browser's global environment. In other words, I suspect it was clumsily implemented. That happens to everyone from time to time.
-
@Nekomajin Please stop complaining. It is not true that there has been no communication; there has been plenty. You already had an official reply from the Vivaldi Team:

We're sorry to keep you waiting and we understand you. As @Ayespy said already, the feature is being rewritten and I confirm that on internal test builds it already works a lot better. The option to disable the Pop-out video button will come soon as well.
Thank you for your patience. -

Stop commenting under my posts! -
@grishka I've found it useful. I'm on a laptop, I don't have two monitors, so it lets me keep an eye on videos no matter what else I'm doing. That's nice to have sometimes. At least it's our option whether to click the button to use it, as opposed to webpages' autoplay videos, and pages that automatically move their videos to PiP just because you scroll away from them. (The nerve of us, scrolling away...)
But I definitely do understand and agree with the improvements people have requested. Pesala summarized it nicely here:

@Nekomajin lol look at some other forum threads and you'll find that Pesala is the one person Poor Decision Defense Force
-
@biguglyboy6 You will find that I also criticise poor decisions, but I do not whine about them constantly.

Snapshot with additional Pop-out video fixes and an option to disable the button (Settings > Webpages) have just been released in today's Snapshot. Check it out here.
-
@jane-n
Please, either backport it to stable, or release v2.12 as soon as possible! -
@Nekomajin unfortunately 2.12 is still suffering from some severe bugs so I don't think it's anywhere near release yet. But backporting it to stable would make sense, after some public testing (even though personally I don't think it will happen).
-
@Nekomajin I would strongly advise against. This entire episode happened because something that should not have been released at all at that point of time was pushed through without proper planning. Doing that again feels like the wrong response.
On the good side, we went from zero (there was literally no way short of downgrading or memory patching to work the issue around - not even patch a recompile) to a usable snapshot and to the commitment from the project to make it part of the main release at its proper time. I believe it was understood what was wrong and why, and let's hope it is for everyone's improvement. This feels like a "good job guys!" from me.
-
It is very annoying, I would like an option to remove it entirely.
-
@HeinrichCorneliusAgrippa The option is already available in the Snapshot release. It will come to stable as soon as 2.12 is deemed ready for a stable release.

You had the time to register a new account and post here like a drama queen but not to look what this update was about, exactly to add the setting to remove the PiP button on every video? Impressive.

Capitalization is only permissible to emphasize single words, even then it is better and more respectful to use bold.
-
Which smart (!) person taught about this feature?
Is there any person on this planet who wants to popup their video for no reason? It is not useful anyway.
Please remove this disgusting feature. -
@cejno The ability to disable it is already in the current snapshot.
