Switch to disable picture-in-picture / video popout icon
-
well, at least I found easier ways to hide it in fullscreen YT. First method only works on ultrawide monitors. The icon disappears when you move the mouse outside of the video. It also disappears when I leave my mouse on the bar at the bottom holding the other buttons.
That menu bar in YT is the ideal spot for this button, left of the button for settings. Why not show it on top of that bar and make it fully transparent? I'm not a developer, but I would assume that it's possible to select a different spot based on the website someone is visiting. The UI for websites like YT doesn't change that often. The button is already following the same logic (believe it's pretty much universal). This would allow you to select the perfect spot/size for the most popular websites containing videos (e.g. make it smaller for websites with small previews). Would also consider changing the icon, it's identical to the existing Miniplayer icon on YT. Maybe remove the border between the square and the borders on the icon (i.e. it goes beyond the tab)?
The bug is annoying, but the position on YT videos is annoying as well. It's adding a "top center" control while we already have "bottom left" and "bottom right". I'm just thinking of what you could do to prevent everyone from disabling it as soon as they get that option. Maybe something like this would help. I'm on an ultrawide and love this feature because it allows me to move the video between virtual desktops on Win10 without design overhead from the browser. This also allows me to show the video on top of my game (borderless fullscreen). I'm already hooked, but I can imagine that it's less useful for people that use an external monitor/TV to watch videos.

+1 for an option to disable this please.
-
At first I was like "Oh cool, no idea who this may be for, but lemme just quickly disable this because I've never used P-in-P..."...
And then I've realised that they promptly f o r g o t to add the disable switch.

I love vivaldi but this is the dumbest thing they have done so far, as other have said it is unthinkable to introduce such an invasive button that does not disappear and can not be disabled. QA team have failed on this one i'm afraid, they should push out a fix to stable branch ASAP!

does not disappear
it does, move the mouse pointer away from the video

I would rather downgrade and bite whatever security risk than having a button showing in the most obvious place of every single video and there's no way of disabling it, customization is the major reason I'm using this browser.
-
Just to reiterate: I "like" the option of having the button for "windowed" videos and I would like to keep using it.
So IMO please add an option to remove it over fullscreen videos but the button should be able to stay over embedded videos. -
Hi, I still not understand why user are so annoyed about this tiny icon which fade away in 5/10 of a second in every video portal I test it. Icon in fullscreen fade out, too.
So I am a bit annoyed about user have to change browser or downgrade because of this small UI glitch.Cheers, mib

@mib2berlin Yes. People get annoyed when spoilt brats rant about not very much, without even bothering to search first to see if it is a known issue.
Forum policy is to censor people who complain about spoilt brats complaining instead of censoring the spoilt brats for ranting in the first place. Such is the dystopian world in which we now live.
-
@mib2berlin
I am one of those complainers and one of those who reverted back to the previous build.:) But I can understand your reaction: it is indeed a small thing, so why react so strongly about it?
Well, for a lot of people it is intrusive. Especially for those who do not want or hate that hole PIP thing. And it appears on almost all videos, even small preview videos. It feels like it forced down out throats this way. We know now that it is "In Progress" to have a choice to have that button in view or not, but in the beginning that was not clear.
So, did we complain too soon? IMHO: no. But ranting about it now while it is In Progress, indeed it spoiled. -

So I am a bit annoyed about user have to change browser or downgrade because of this small UI glitch.Personally, I found that the button didn't fade away - on several different machines and user profiles - unless you specifically moved the cursor off the side of the screen... (and even then it sometimes came back)
Other than that I agree with Menno555 - the fact it was "forced" upon the user base, without notice and in such a rushed manner, is what has annoyed people. This is not the type of thing we expect from Vivaldi! Of course, people quitting Vivaldi over it is a childish overreaction, and of course most of us will wait for it to be fixed, but it shouldn't have happened in the first place.

The reason this makes so many people uncomfortable is because it breaks a rule that at least I take for granted: the browser should not display its own content in top of a web page.
Let's say I'm designing a page, and I want to present a video, and I want to give it custom, very clean looking controls. With this feature turned on, the browser is effectively breaking my page. It doesn't matter if it is just an icon. In fact, it doesn't matter if it's just a pixel. My page is no longer displaying the way I intended. And the browser is directly responsible of that, because it's drawing in top of my content.
-
@mib2berlin maybe you'd understand better if it was as broken for you as it is for most of us complaining here where it DOESN 'T DISAPPEAR from the screen with the rest of the ui and REMAINS ON SCREEN even in FULLSCREEN.
-
Personally, I have a bad habit to frequently move the mouse, even when I'm watching a video, and although the usual controls of the video are at the bottom and don't bother me, this pip icon is constantly on the middle of the video or the screen if it's fullscreen.

+1 requesting a way to hide / disable / remove this feature
-
Hello,
Please remove this function. It is unnecessary and annoying. -
Asking for removal of a feature that might interest some people is egoistical.
I'm all about for keeping all the features, but selectable in settings. -
Currently, the function is more disturbing than helping. This is how it looks on Facebook:
It does not need to be removed, but in its current form, in my opinion, it should not be enabled by default, because it too interferes with the appearance of websites.
-
I think a good way of implementing any kind of button on top of videos will always be difficult to find, no matter the placement or size. Top-center is really the only location it can be realistically placed, and even there it will interfere with stuff depending on circumstance.
Hopefully we'll get an option to disable the icon in the next snapshot any day now, and I think they'll try to push this to the stable as well as soon as possible once confirmed to work.
For properly working PiP I think the only long-term solution is to simply wait for sites to implement it themselves in their players. Some sites already do so.

Vivaldi first promise on its home page is very simple:
From the look and feel, to how you interact with your browser, every aspect of Vivaldi can be tweaked and customized. You’re in control.
PiP in its current form should have never been implemented in the first place.
