Update/Replace saved session
-
For someone who makes heavily use of the session feature I'm missing one essential functionality: Easy replacing/updating of saved sessions.
At the moment the workflow looks like this:
- Open save session dialog
- Enter name
- Save session
- Open load session dialog
- Select old session
- Delete session
Quite cumbersome isn't it?
My suggestion: Add a list of saved sessions below the naming field in the 'save sessions dialog'. The workflow would become:
- Open save session dialog
- Select session from list
- Click save (Replaces the selected session)
Great improvement I think :smiling_face_with_open_mouth:

Re: Update/Replace saved session
I agree. At first I thought I was missing something, then realized that Vivaldi simply didn't have a way to update a session. An obvious option. I wonder why it wasn't part of original design of 'sessions'?

@Pesala done, thanks for the link.

Hello,
Currently using Vivaldi Snapshot 5.8.2950.3 (Official Build) (64-bit),
I encounter a bug with the "Update with Current Tabs" feature, in the Sessions Panel IF i have any Workspaces created:- I save just the current window as a session (e.g. Test1 - 6 tabs)
- I create a Workspace with 2 tabs. Return to the 6 tabs window.
- I hit "Update with Current Tabs". It should not do any update, but it also saves the tabs from the Workspace. Now session Test1 is 8 tabs
- I close the 6 tabs window. The workspace is still open, of course.
- If I load the Test1 session, I get all 8 tabs: 6 in the window and 2 copies in the Workspace.
This makes the "Update with Current Tabs" unusable with Workspaces (it clones all workspaces).
Possible solutions:- Offer the option to "Save only tabs in Current Window" and "Include All Workspaces" for the "Update with Current Tabs feature
- If a session includes Workspaces then maybe don't open the included Workspace on Session load if it is already opened. Or don't open the already opened tabs.
Thank you

does 'open saved session' open the session in a new window? if so, and if you have any pinned tabs, does closing the just opened 'saved session' window using the close button on upper right cause pinned tabs to move to the previously open window, resulting in duplicate pinned tabs on the original window. (this behavior didn't happen if using the 'close' from drop down box, iow close from one location didn't work the same as from the other location)
this is another reason that I stopped using the saved sessions feature, in addition to the lack of being able to update saved sessions.

@astro46 A session may contain one or more windows, with one or more tabs in each window. The tabs may be pinned or not.
Closing a window will move pinned tabs to the previous window, since the purpose of pinning tabs is to prevent them being closed accidentally.
The session is stored on disk. It may be opened in the current window, or a new window. The opened session immediately ceases to be a session that was stored, since tabs can be closed, opened, scrolled, pinned, or zoomed. What you have is a fresh window or windows, which may be saved as a new session.
To update/replace a saved session, it must be saved with a new name, or first one must delete the session from the Open Session dialog, then one can save the current session using the previous name.
The linked request List Existing Sessions on Save Session would show a list of all saved sessions, making it easy to update/replace a previously saved session.

seems that your post contradicts Gnaritas' experience with the snapshot, where he can update saved sessions, but with an apparent problem. None of this addresses the problem which i have written about before: the different behavior in closing a window from different controls.
i prefer to hear back from Gnaritas and his experience with the snapshot version of saved sessions.

@Pesala Reading through your answer I realized that you might be referring to the File menu session management. I am referring to the new Sessions panel, which has a feature "Update with Current Tabs" on Right-clicking a session. While the intent of the feature is most welcome, it is currently conflicting with another experimental feature, Workspaces, because of the latter's particularity of not actually being closed (unless deleted).
The idea is, even if you have 1 window with 1 Start Page tab, but you have 10 Workspaces created in the background, if you open a Session that stored any of those Workspaces, they will get duplicated.
@astro46 You are right, that is also a pesky problem, which could probably be solved with a check on the original window during the process of "saving" that pinned tab from being closed.Cheers

@Gnaritas
Hi, I know the developer discuss about the workspace/session dilemma. I am sure they will come up with a good solution.Cheers, mib

I didn't understand that you were referring to sessions panel. I was referring to the file menu session management. The pinned tab issue could be solved simply by making the upper left close program icon operate the same as as tab bar drop down close command. as for not providing ability to update a saved session, that could use the a sub routine similar to the one that saves the browser state when closing.

Hello!
Just wanted to give my congrats to the devs, the problem is nicely solved
In Version 5.8.2970.3 (Official Build) snapshot (64-bit), the Update session now has "Include All Workspaces" and "Save Only Tabs In Current Window" options.
I know these are still experimental features, but you guys move fast! No wonder I recommend this browser left and rightKeep it up, cheers!
