Include QR code scanner in mobile version

Sometimes they are just useful.
Yes, I know that it is possible to pass URL via 3rd party app but why do I need them?... -
It still baffles me to this day how this capability is not yet built in.
Firefox has one included, and it uses a third party library, which I think is the one everyone else uses anyway. https://github.com/zxing/zxing

@rotfl @LonM : Isn't it already built-in in many other places?
For example on my Android device, I can scan a QR code with:- The default Google app: long push on "home" button to start the Google app / assistant, then the little square on the bottom left to start the photo / visual scanner.
- A feature from the launcher I have installed (search bar of the Microsoft Launcher)
And I assume it is also possible with many default "photo" application (though not mine), depending on the constructor of your smartphone... (for example like on iOS: it is automatically detected when taking a photo)
I don't say it is not useful. But I'm not convinced we need an other way of doing something which is already possible.
On your system, are you sure you have no other alternative than installing a dedicated 3rd party application to scan QR codes? -
@rotfl QR codes may have sensitive (private key) or harmful (link to exploit site).
Exposing a browser to this directly is a guarantee for something to go wrong.
See the Samsung browser searching for the content of aWiFi
setup string. -

That's my point : it wasn't built in to your operating system. It was built into your launchers, which are not standard on all devices.
-
@guilimote I had to download 3rd party app for that (I don't use Google app).
Yes, it is possible but requires downloading stuff. In many cases users don't need overcomplexity but just simple scanner.@becm Every other input method could be harmful too. Despite that many apps got built-in basic scanner capabilities.
-
@lonm since Apple already has seen the light and included it into their standard camera application, arround 2020 maybe Google will see the light.
And arround 2025 the rebranded variants (Samsung,โฆ) will follow.Having this in a standard system application which needs access to the camera anyway is the only place to make this vaguely secure (update and permission requirements).
@rotfl This way there will be a user interaction required when there is data to be shared between them. -

No, the feature from the "Google App" is built-in, at least if your home button is mapped to it (which is the default for most of the systems I think, but I may be mistaken. It was for mine.).
-
@guilimote Excuse me, I think I may have confused the issue. I didn't mean built-in as in access tied to a system shortcut.
When I said "built-in", I referred to an application which comes by default on every instance of AOSP (the android open source project) e.g. the calculator.
As @becm notes above, it is built in by default to Apple devices.
However, it is only "built-in" on android devices if they have the "Google App", which not all devices will have, and some users may not use.
As a consequence, if vivaldi included it then that would:
- Act as a selling point for people who otherwise don't have a QR reader
- Guarantee that users of vivaldi have (either through vivaldi or another app) access to a QR reader
- Provide feature parity with other browser
-
I just posted a similar request. To put a fine point on it, are you talking about within the main browser interface, or for the widget that can be placed on the device's homescreen? I would like it in both places, but having it on the homescreen widget would be especially helpful.

I will find this feature useful even though I have a inbuilt qr code scanner in the camera app.
Although Vivaldi is my main mobile browser, I don't use it as my default browser. So when I open a link with my qr scanner, it sends me to my default browser which is what I wanted. However, there are some cases where I want to open it in Vivaldi instead and a capability to do so would be very useful.
-
Me too, I miss this feature from Opera

Enable following flags
chrome://flags/#chrome-sharing-hub
chrome://flags/#chrome-share-qr-code
Then load any website. Open Menu - share - qr code
There will be scan qr code option in second tab.
But this scanner only scan on other phone/computer. -
Today, with the implementation of QR code generation in snapshot, this function takes on a lot of relevance. I hope you can implement it soon.

I would like to see a QR code scanner in the desktop version as well. My current job requires me to frequently need to scan QR codes to access registration information for various things. And there are many times when I have a pdf, word document, or website with a qr code that I need to scan. Being able to do this with Vivaldi (which I use religiously at work) would make my life so much easier.
I imagine being able to select an area on the screen using a mouse (like a screenshot) and then scanning it for a qr code.
-
Vivaldi for Desktop got the feature that URL is shown by QR code. So, I think Vivaldi for Android needs this feature QR code reader for cooperating with Desktop version.

Latest snapshot offers a scanner for testing: https://vivaldi.com/blog/mobile/android-3-6-2160-3/

Can I scan QR codes in private mode?
Sometimes I want to open the link directly into a private tab, but there's no QR code scanner in the search bar.
