Downloads Button Popup

This feature request is for a downloads button
downloads button on the Address Bar, Firefox-style. I have my side panel toolbar is always hidden.
-
@Pesala Missed "Panel Toolbar" VS "Panel" difference there. With only panel toolbar, much better for sure, although still some unnecessary space and clutter. Also it's kind of hard to notice that icon changed (like no animation when it starts), not too good for new users.
Hiding with F4: Most users won't look for hotkeys much. Also it's not very plausible that someone will hide/unhide that panel just because of this. It will be just always visible, or always hidden in practice.
Last last time I remember, the factory default was opening the download panel on download, plus it wasn't in floating mode. Not an ideal default I think, might makes a bad impression.
The Firefox-style button does show progress right on the button as well, so that's part of the request. FF solution costs minimal space and clutter, and easier to spot when download starts. It's just a better solution for a basic function, so should be learnt from.

@ddekany It is best to learn to use what is available now as this thread is not even tagged as In Progress or Pipeline yet. That means you could be waiting a year or more for it to be implemented.
- The default is now not to open the panel automatically
- The floating panel is disabled by default, but Auto-Close is enabled by default if the floating panel is enabled
- New users should read the help file, or ask how to get the most out of the program
- The FIrefox Button animation may help new users, but no one is a new user for long. Once you know about the Download Panel Toolbar icon, you know where to look when you start a download. Here, most downloads are completed by the time I get around to looking.
- FF solution costs minimal space even when not in use. The Download Panel shortcut can be used to show it only when needed, then hide the panel, leaving the toolbar open.
- F4 will hide the panel toolbar when it is not in use, but I would not call it useless clutter. There are dozens of useful web pages that can be added as web panels even if you don't use Bookmarks, Notes, History, or Email. I use only Bing Translator and a Vivaldi Feature Request search.

@Pesala that's pretty sad to take years just to add a simple button with animated download progress bar and notification that opens a popup menu showing more detailed info on downloads...
I have a 5:4 widescreen monitor and still don't like the panel toolbar
as such I have no notification of download progress what so ever without clicking a button at the bottom left of my screen.don't forget some of us have already been waiting years for this and dealing with the current garbage...
I guess Vivaldi likes Opera and Firefox being superior in this area
what's even worse is there's not a single extension that tries to match Firefox
-
@Pesala Only showing the panel toolbar (narrow vertical strip with only the icons on it) worked for a few days, but then I updated Vivaldi, and now the toolbar is not visible, only together with the whole panel. (Maybe I'm blind, but I can't find any related preferences anymore. I guess they changed this.) So, as the next alternative, now I have set up downloads to automatically open the panel, but with "Floating panel" and "Auto-close inactive panel" checked. So now if I start a download, the panel opens (so it's obvious that a download has started), without resizing the web page, and when I click somewhere outside it, it closes. Anyway, as a "power user" I can survive anything, I'm just wondering how would I set it up for less determined users.
-
@ddekany Just set up easy to remember shortcuts to view the download panel.
F4 Shows/Hides all of the panels and the toolbar. Each panel can have its own shortcut, which shows/hides the panel, but does not hide the Panels Toolbar.
-
@Pesala Ah, now I see, nothing has changed with the update. Simply the way auto-close works is confusing. If I close the panel with F4 when the download panel was still open, then next time I re-open the panel, the download "tab" won't auto-close anymore. I had to click the download icon to restore the original state, where the panel is open, yet the download "tab" is hidden.
-
@ddekany If you never wanted to hide the Panel completely, then change the F4 shortcut to Open Next Panel instead. This will make the panel much easier to access & you can rotate panel by tapping F4 repeatedly.
Else, if you don't want to deal with all this confusion mess & prefer to have the panel hidden most of the time, you can try CSS mod to automate the panels' switch: https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/378402
-
@dude99 I'm fine with floating + download auto open + auto-close... after learning what not to click. But that, and especially all proposed CSS and hot key tricks are totally unrealistic, if you want people to chose Vivaldi over something else.
-
@ddekany IMHO Vivaldi is a pretty nerdy browser at it's core, it's not well known to be "user friendly" to new user coming from other major browser. That's usually what happen to software priorities innovative functionalities over streamline & stylish GUI (like G.Chrome). Vivaldi have so much hidden functions that it require a lot more learning effort from new user, it will take months if not years to discover most of the hidden goodies.
So, it's totally normal for u to feel weird & overwhelmed by unorthodox designs & behaviors of this browser. Panel is actually an ancient feature adopted from old Opera, that's why some of it's behavior feels confusing & outdated, maybe it's time to rework the Panel's UI... LOL
In the last few updates they are trying to move toward modernizing the GUI, but I think it need more tweaking on UI behavior over simply eye candy upgrades.

@dude99 I personally think vivaldi doesn't really want to take off
it's been literally years, almost decades now, and they still havent figured out how to do something as simple as an animated download button next to the user icon...this even dates back to before custom avatars or blurple theme were a thing...
obviously they're not really as focused on preserving screen space as they claim to be if they want you to have a second tab bar over being inconvenienced with having to open the panel toolbar whenever you want to download something and know it's progress...
(I never once complained about the clutter of 70 tabs)add to that Brave is beating them in other areas since I can't even use vivaldi on my other machines.
this would change if they provided a static binary like Brave does, or an appimage...
nah the best packaged browser I can use right now that my distro (on every other machine) provides is Opera, which is now no better than Chrome.if Vivaldi wants to become big, we need portability and usability
but as pertaining to this issue, vivaldi doesn't even want you to have a simple download button that's actually visible.
(my friends would tell you I complain about this constantly)... sad... isn't it?
EDIT: btw, I know it may not seem like it, but I'm actually thankful for everything mentioned...
I just feel like Mrs. Puff when Mr. Krabs wanted to take her on a date and buried her in stuff she didn't need.for example, I've never once played Vivaldia
btw, I actually use tab grouping, and my tabs are still cluttered, and I use the custom avatar...
but that's really it of everything added recently... -

Vivaldi do have a Download button at the Panel's switch, & I agree that it lack some informative GUI like Firefox. And for those never use the panel, it's a missing feature.

I think Vivaldi design logic is widescreen have become so popular that most user want to utilize the extra empty space for something other than webpage display, thus they expect most to have the panel (& panel switch) display at all time.
But I, for one ain't that sort of user, so I automate all the toolbars & panel with CSS mod, & turn the maximized window into a pseudo fullscreen display. You can't do this with other major browser! LOL
@Tcll said in Downloads Button Popup:
I've never once played Vivaldia
Played once & then hide it cuz it's not much fun. They should clone Super Mario or Sonic instead. LOL
@Tcll said in Downloads Button Popup:

Try vertical tabbar, it's design to contain unlimited tabs per window. And it actually made much more sense with tab stacking, but unfortunately it feels kinda undercook... cuz most people still stuck with horizontal tabbar, thus sadly they invest less attention in vertical tabbar.
But recently vertical tabbar have gain much attention from Edge browser. And that might repeat the history of Firefox tab browsing vs. Opera tab browsing popularity war. Vivaldi are a bunch of honest good innovators, but just can't compete with some snake oil salesmen that always know how to steal the thunder from its' competitors.

@dude99 oh woops I meant to mention I don't use the sidebar in that comment...
I actually did mention it, but deleted it as it came across a bit negative in that section :nervous_laugh:I actually don't like the sidebar at all...
I prefer to have everything displayed when needed
* show the download icon with a progress bar (and optional other info) next to the user icon when downloading, then flash when finished *but yeah I'm more-ish the traditional type of user:
the only problem is there's no visible download button at all for me
also yeah, my CPU info isn't accurate, nobody has any solution for genmon to display this efficiently...
just ignore it -
Kind of sad to see that here is no progress at all. The only thing i'm using the side bar for is for downloads and it would be great to get rid of the sidebar at all, by just moving the downloads to the top, next to the other addons. I mean, Vivaldi has so much great options to customize the UI and adjust the browser to your personal workflow and needs, why not give people the option to also get rid of the whole sidebar if they do not need it and have a second place where you can see your current and previous downloads. I like a clean and minimal interface and this is the reason why the sidebar, but also the bottom statusbar is disabled and should not be visable at all.
-
I see Vivaldi still isn't focused on minimizing screen space by putting the download button next to the user icon:
update: April 29 2021
https://vivaldi.com/new/instead we're still focused on wasting screen space by being forced to use the side panel to keep track of downloads.
I guess the devs must be against such simple and elegant functionality if they still can't figure out a common sense feature like this.
shame. -
@tcll For me any button I rarely use is a waste of screen space. When I start a download I can just press F4 or
Ctrl+Shift+D
to keep track of any downloads. If Vivaldi kept adding buttons for every single minor use case, for users too lazy to learn basic keyboard hotkeys or use the menus it would soon look like this:
-
@pathduck obviously there'd be a settings toggle to auto-hide the download button next to the user icon when no downloads are going, if the toggle to enable the download icon in the toolbar is enabled...
that's just common sense for people who actually want to preserve screen space.I'd prefer not to have to press a button (or 3) to view my download progress
but I'd also prefer not to have to waste more screen space than needed by using 16-20 pixels at the side of my screen for nothing more than a download button.
all I need is for the (animated) download button to be displayed here:
rather than here:
you tell me which wastes more screen space.
currently I don't even use the sidebar at all.EDIT: currently Opera and Firefox have a more superior UI to Vivaldi just for this reason.

Otoh some browsers like to remove search bar from the address bar, so you get a lot of free space for additional buttons
BTW: I love that picture
-
I just have trouble understanding why the devs continue to miss such important functionality...
literally all this is asking for is a settings toggle to enable the download button in the toolbar, like so:
they can certainly provide toggles for numerous other things
why is the downloads button so special that it can't be in the toolbar and has to inconveniently force users to waste screen space with the side panel??
(or force users to press buttons just to see them) -
man, 4.0 is out and still lacking such an important toggle here: (or at least in Appearance)
Show Downloads Button
I guess Vivaldi still isn't focused on a clean customizable UI and hassle-free user experience when it comes to downloads.
