Drag Text to Tab Bar, Tabs to Search
-
In the current version of vivaldi, you can drag the text to the empty space of tab bar to search the text EXCEPT you have the title bar at the top. I am not sure this is a bug or an intended behaviour.

oh I see that is so weird...
I thought drop to search didn't work because I was using "tabs at top"
you have to be a sniper to use "tabs at top" with drag and drop.. there is just this sliver you can drop on next to the rightmost tab... but the wide open area to the right of that, is a no-drop zone
conversely, with "tabs at bottom"... you can drop it anywhere to the right of the tabs... in that wide open area.. and it works.

After being used to dragging texts and URLs to randomly anywhere in the tab bar for so long, I am finding this pretty inconvenient to do it accurately over the [+] icon in Vivaldi. I thought we can do almost everything in this browser as per our requirements, didn't expect something so simple to be missing.
I wonder if Vivaldi devs will ever consider working on this. Guess I'll stick with Brave until then.

Have you tried right-clicking the selected text?

@Pesala Yes, I can do that. However, dragging and dropping is much more convenient and something I am used to. This whole post was created for this one feature, so I thought this was obvious and I didn't need to mention this.

Drag Text to Tab Bar, Tabs to Search.... This IS absolutely needed, been using this for at least 20 years in other browsers, shouldn't have to use an Extension for this BASIC Modern function.
However, this is the wrong wording and implementation. What we need is "Drag and Drop Text/Link in Page" to Search and open Webpages.Preferable functionality is:
Drag and Drop occurs "In Page", so it's much faster and easier than dragging to Tab Bar.
Highlight Text or Link and drag and drop.
4 Direction Drag/drop options (The direction Between Up and Right, between Up and Left, etc.), so a Settings page, so you can select up to 4 different Search Engines/Websites to search. Google, Wikipedia, etc.
The Extension "Yet another Drag and Go Fix" works this way, for an example. Though, it's not fully working due to not being updated for Manifest v3 yet.
Settings to choose to "Open Tab in Forground or Background".
Setting to choose where to open tab, at End of Tabs or after Current Tab which is the most preferred option.
Think that's it? -
This is the only feature which is stopping me from using Vivaldi. I am used to dragging text and link to search or open pages in new tab for years, so feels kinda stupid to change the habit when it works perfectly fine on other browsers.
Recently, I read that there was some rework on upper area of Vivaldi browser (which includes tabs, address bar, bookmarks etc.), so I thought, maybe now they might have considered adding this. Kinda disappointed to see that it still does not work.

If you switch browsers, many things will be different. If you're unwilling to use workarounds, or modify your workflow, there will always be something that irritates you.
- Use tabs on the side
- Drop the text or URL onto the New Tab button
- Right-click and search, or goto the URL
This Feature Request is not even tagged yet as Nice to Have, or Pipeline, let alone In Progress, so it may be years before it gets done. The Tab Bar at the top serves dual purpose as the Tab Bar and Window Title Bar, that is why it does not work with the default Tabs on Top.
