Create Tab Stacks from Pinned Tabs
-
Tab stacks are great, but pinned tabs are also great. Why can't we have both at the same times? Currently, a tab stack cannot be created out of pinned tabs, but strangely enough, individual tabs in a tab stack can be pinned. I think it would be great if these tab stacks could be properly pinned, or if a tab stack could be created from pinned tabs.
-
@altcode You can, but it's not officially supported at this time.
You can make a stack of tabs, and then working from the top/left, open each tab and pin it using a keyboard shortcut of your own choice (I use ctrl+alt+p). At present I have 3 stacks of pinned tabs, totaling 7 tabs overall.
Still, feel free to push for this to be a supported feature. It was, during the technical previews, but it was dropped for some reason.
-
Official support would be great because the "workaround" pinned tab stacks are not visible in the window panel.
-
@ayespy Even quicker, you can select all tabs in the stack and pin them all at once with the shortcut. The same if you want to unpin them — select all first.
-
@pesala Hadn't thought of that.
-
Tab stack could be created from pinned tabs.
Example : I have https://forum.vivaldi.net pinned, so I want every link open in a new tab stack, but maintain https://forum.vivaldi.net outside the tab stack.
How to do it? -
I'd like this proposed feature to support this scenario:
- Suppose that you have enabled the auto tab stacking option.
- Suppose you have a non-stacked, pinned tab. Let's call it Tab A.
- On Tab A, you "Open Link in New Background Tab." Let's call the new tab Tab B.
- At this point, I want Tabs A and B to form a new tab stack. In fact, if Tab A weren't pinned, Tabs A and B would form a new tab stack thanks to the auto tab stacking option.
- Now, close Tab B. Then I want Tab A to go back to state 2 above.
To me, this is the last piece of the puzzle of getting the perfect tab management.

You can try this...
- Stack all the tabs you want to keep.
- Save all tabs to session. Go to Menu -> File -> Save All Tabs As Session
you can open all those tabs on the new window and session

Snapshot 2829.3 has finally added official support for this!
-
This was already implemented in Vivaldi 5.6.

@feretio It works for me, either with drag and drop, or by selecting the pinned tabs then using the context menu (or a keyboard shortcut if you have defined one in Settings, Keyboard, Tab).

I think there's some confusion as to this feature request.
While it might now be possible to stack tabs that are already pinned, opening a new tab from a link of a pinned tab/web page (either by "Open Link in New Tab" from the right click menu or simply click on the link with the middle mouse button) opens it as a new unpinned unstacked tab.
With "Tabs -> New Tab Position -> As Tab Stack with Related Tab" enabled, if you do the same on link in an unpinned tab, a new stack is created.
The feature request is for a setting to create a new stack (preferably pinned) when a link in a pinned tab/web page is opened in a new tab.
For example, I have a pinned custom web page with a bunch of links. I middle mouse click on these links to open new tabs. I want these tabs stacked. If this web page wasn't pinned, this is what would happen.
Thanks!

@feretio AltCode is clearly satisfied that the request has been implemented as requested.
-
Ok, I'll create a new feature request.
-
@feretio It seems like a bug to me.
Please see How to Report a Bug.

@feretio Did you create the request? have a link?
I'm looking forward for this feature, all the time I open link from my pinned tab and it's tough that it opens far from the parent tab (outside of the pinned tabs area).
