Option to Disable Autoload and Autoplay of HTML5 Videos
-
@juanvase Thanks, I already know that trick. I'm looking for general html5 video audio solution for all sites.
Hopefully @Nekomajin can recommend us his extension solution.

@dude99
I use this one: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/disable-html5-autoplay-re/cafckninonjkogajnihihlnnimmkndgf?hl=enIt probably does not match your preferences, but for me, it works perfectly.
-
@nekomajin tried that, it broke YT video time display when block preloading. Then it's pointless when not blocking preloading, cuz it just keep downloading video in the background onload. Also, I remember it's will become buggy sometimes after I choose to load a video, then it forgot to block video in later new tab. LOL
I have tried most if not all such extensions & none of them really capable of fixing what big G have maliciously broke since day 1. It's not just YT, but all html5 video player on the Internet.

I am not sure what the problem can be, because it works fine for me. -
@spaztastical It really is astounding that Vivaldi just can't do this, since it's probably one of the most important features for most people.
I've actually passed on using Brave for a very simple reason: No installation control. It's unfathomable to me to have a browser you don't even have a choice where to put it. The devs actually deleted complaints in github about it!
So, when I installed Vivaldi (and on the strength of researching before hand about the 'Standalone' option) I was thrilled to see such a well thought out installation process, including being able to opt-out of the stupid auto-updates. Such a great first impression!
Then, to see such wonderful features, Vilvadi won me over quickly. But then, not being able to natively block autoplay videos, leaves me just befuddled. Do the developers not use the same internet? I don't know who actually enjoys being bombarded with automatic playing videos on visiting any website --- or who the person is that, unwanted, has a playing video follow them as they scroll down a page. To me that's just so rude, and the proper thing would be to just stop using websites doing it, but since those websites are the Washington Post, and CNN, and my local news station, that's really not possible.
Other stupid things, like an option to use the serial port (seriously?! in my browser(!) I already have a terminal program!) don't really affect me, so for general bloat, you just try to ignore it. But you can't ignore the autoloading videos: they waste my precious, scarce bandwidth and autoplaying makes me want to hunt down the people who've put it in my face and lovingly correct their thinking with a firm clue stick.
tl;dr Please, implement a way to stop autoload and autoplay.
If we could just get the Vivaldi and Brave guys together, maybe there'd be two browsers in the world somewhat focused on privacy letting you choose where to install and not have stupid autoplay garbage!
-
@greyproc Not as easy to do as different video players have different set ups (even Safari has trouble).
-
also, i hope when the foreground and background are going to play media in the same time, vivaldi can auto-stop the background play, And i hope it can identify the suddenly, only once alert and a constant media play. As avoid of breaking experience.
-
@chas4 forget about each individual media player, cuz there are limitless of variation & some of 'em intentionally broke the standard for profits... Just focus on the <video> & <audio> tag & bypass those stupid media player.
Basically just build a <video> & <audio> blocker (or media player blocker), block all of 'em onload & then allow user to click on the "blocked element" placeholder on website, or button on browser's GUI to load the media player.
Then build a STOP command to suspend any media player process regardless of it's status (similar to images & animation). Then we will have full control over WHEN to play & STOP any video/audio on OUR Vivaldi browser.
-
@dude99 That assumes they are using those HTML tags, many don't.

Which HTML element do theses use?
<object …>
or<embed …>
? -
@doctorg Might be left overs from the 90s or javascript or src etc

I request that vivaldi add the Firefox Autoplay setting choices:
Allow Audio and Video
Block Audio
Block Audio and Video
Firefox also allows a list of websites that do not follow default settings -
Happy 4th year anniversary! This request currently have 218 upvote & stuck in pipeline for many, many years already. LOL
I think we need to refresh the recommended extension list for 2022, anyone know extensions that still can block autoplay on pageload?
-
This workaround clearly will not suit all people, but anyway fwiw. I keep youtube cookies permanently blocked, which stops both autoplay and the tedious European Permissions overlay.

Enhancer for Youtube https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/enhancer-for-youtube/ponfpcnoihfmfllpaingbgckeeldkhle
Obviously only works on Youtube though.
-
@tbgbe Why not obviate an extraneous extension simply by blocking cookies?
-
@guigirl Because I have login, subscribes and watched active.
-
@tbgbe Euw.
-
@dude99 I use AutoplayStopper while I wait for Vivaldi to add it natively like in Firefox.
-
This extension is the one I use because I've had the best luck with it: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/html5-autoplay-blocker/icppkihnmgkncknjlfkkjgfgoifkcgii
