Text input loosing focus after switching tabs (Google Docs)
-
@PlasmaFox
Hi, as mentioned it is a reported bug VB-94958 in Vivaldi and hard to fix.
I guess Google like if you use Chrome more than other browser.
I don´t use G. docs but it would be interessting how Edge work on it.Cheers, mib

@mib2berlin it's a nice idea but not true. Edge works correctly; it does not have this focus problem that Vivaldi does. Also tested it in Brave and Brave also works correctly. So it's just Vivaldi
-
Confirmed I have the same issue. I have the same behavior on my Mac and on my Linux laptops.
The work around, though a bit annoying, is to toggle back and forth between tabs a second time, like mentioned on the first page of this post.
so keyboard toggle from tab2 back to tab1 (your google doc where you can't type), so toggle back to tab2 and then to tab1 again and then you can type were the cursor was, with no mouse clicking. -
Still a unfixed bug.

@mib2berlin said in Text input loosing focus after switching tabs (Google Docs):

Probably they handle special code for g-suite. For vivaldi is harder because they have to craft the code both on the chromium and UI side, I guess. Moreover this patch could die anytime becoming wasted code.

I was told: Google Services websites have a mess of JS code for their apps which is hard to debug and errors to fix. If it would be easy, the Vivaldi devs had done it.

Do you have any issues with 6.1 Stable and 6.2 Snapshot on Google Docs?

@rojas457
Your issue is with Google Docs or Google Sheets?
Oh i see 6.2 and Google Docs is broken. I updated bug report. -
Bumping the thread, I also have this issue, although hitting Shift-Tab twice seems to work for me, but I'd rather not have to because it messes up bulleted lists.
-
@DoctorG I'm new to this thread and just realized that it is still an unresolved bug (altough i know that it is hard to fix because of the way google implemented google docs) but in 6.2 Stable is still broken

I use multiple browsers on a regular basis so I just ran into this issue today. It's kind of disappointing, sad really, that it hasn't been addressed for so long because it's not a Google Docs issue. Vivaldi just not saving & resetting the focus when redisplaying a tab. When I switch back to a tab that has a Google Doc open, if I hit the tab key about 20 or so times the focus will eventually get to the document and I will see the tabs being entered into the doc. The exact number of tab-key presses will vary on the current state of the browser UI, but it will eventually get back to the document. So it seems like it would be just a matter of determining where the focus is on a tab, saving it and restoring it afterwards. Or perhaps it's just a matter of not changing the focus position on the tab when switching (hiding/showing) tabs.
I think they have implemented something else that requires changing the focus and now they don't want to change or remove the "feature".
I'm not sure if this was mentioned before, but this even works in Firefox.

Hi.
Whenever we switch tabs or apps we loose the focus on the Vivaldi tab.
Imagine that I'm typing text in a tab in Google Docs, then I go to other tab or other program to copy text and then I get back to the Google Docs tab to paste it. As I press Ctrl+Shift+V to paste, a blank page is opened in the tab. I need to click back to go back to Google Docs and place the cursor where the focus was lost and paste the text.
Edit:
Vivaldi version 6.5.3206.50 (Stable channel) stable (64-bit)
Happens since first time installation.

My report seems a duplicate of: https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/75404/text-input-loosing-focus-after-switching-tabs-google-docs/133?page=7
I confirm this does not happen with Firefox or Chrome.

Same here. Is there a bug report we can vote on?
-
@jmss Yeah, you're generalizing based on a single site.
This is a known bug for Google Docs specifically.
Maybe some other similar heavy web apps. It's an old bug, no idea when/if it will ever get fixed.
Workaround: Switch tabs twice...
-
The Google Docs apps are not really debuggable. That could be why there is no fix.
-
I genuinely appreciate the efforts going into the development of this browser, and I am not qualified to judge (and you may not be either, @DoctorG), but I reject the premise that Google Docs apps are not debuggable since other browsers (all that I have tried) have been successful at implementing this.
Vivaldi is really nifty browser, and unfortunately, this the only reason Vivaldi can't be a viable option for me (not my choice to use Gdocs).
