Vivaldi crumbles cookie dialogs, raises the bar on privacy and design

@RogerWilco He has lots of gifs, but I wonder if he has any gfs?

Ouch, that's harsh dude...

@RogerWilco There are more gif's like this:
-
@rogerwilco: There should not be a need for this. It does not blindly accept the cookies. It simply blocks the dialog. Websites are not allowed to set privacy invasive cookies until after you explicitly accept them. Without the dialog, there is no way to accept them. Therefore any website that is complying with the regulations is not supposed to set any privacy-invasive cookies. There should not be any cookies that need to be deleted.
Of course, we cannot force websites not to set those cookies, but the website is using a consent dialog, which implies that they are going to do the right thing.
-
@scottytrees: An extension can do something a little more advanced than our initial implementation. It can block the dialogs, like we do. But an extension can also run JavaScript (which we don't) to actively click on a "reject" or "accept" button, for websites that use their own approach where a dialog might need to be dismissed in a way that is not simply blocked. You might notice dialogs on a minority of websites with our approach, while the extension might be able to cope with a few more. Our approach should have fewer performance impacts. But it's up to you to decide which approach works better for you, we're just here to give you choices
Edit: you may also want to double check which option your selected extension uses. Some of them click on "Accept" or "Accept essential cookies only" on many sites. For privacy purposes, "Reject" or "Accept essential cookies only" would be better.

@RogerWilco For now Cookie AutoDelete will do a fine job of this. Maybe one day the V team will implement this functionality as well (hint, hint @tarquin

@tarquin Thanks very much, that explains it all perfectly! Just downloaded 3.8 to test. Thanks again, cheers!

@tarquin
Hi, is it useful to report pages which still open the cookie pop up?
Two default speed dials of the german version get not blocked with enabled cookie lists, for example.Cheers, mib
-
Summary: I was able to remove two extensions today: "I don't care about cookies" and "ImTranslator (web pages translation)".
-
Nice update, like the look and the new features. But I lost my background picture for the tabs bar and the setting "Windows Background Image" under "AppearanceTabs" is gone. Can you bring that back?
Never mind. Found the setting. Sorry -
@mib2berlin: We do not maintain the lists ourselves. So yes, it is useful to report them - if it is a case where a dialog can be simply blocked by blocking a HTTP resource or by hiding an element on the page - but the report really needs to be made to the organisations who maintain the lists. Try not to overload them with reports though (they are human beings with limited time after all), so if you can work out what to block yourself and just send them a "can you add this rule", that is much better than "this page does not get blocked".
Note that because we are using a basic blocker approach, we can only prevent dialogs on pages that have a simple dialog approach (either a simple element that can be hidden, or a URL that can be blocked). There will be some cases that cannot be blocked, on a minority of sites, and you will still see a few dialogs on a minority of sites.
If you want to know if it is an element that can be blocked, load the page, right click on the dialog that appears, Developer tools - Inspect. Delete the element from the tree view (click the element and press delete), and see if you can still use the page. You might have to delete an element higher up in the tree to get it to work.

@outer-star: Set any image as speed dial wallpaper then enable transparent tab bar. It will produce the same effect as "Window background image"
-
@stardepp Sweet. Thank you very much for pointing me to these. Good promotional material for Vivaldi. The tiny ones, subtle, yet still not too subtle.
-
The new sidebar design is HORRIBLE.
Petition to restore the old icons: https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/60242/bring-back-the-former-icons-on-the-sidebar
-
Arrrr, as always the last, with what I like Vivaldi updates
-
@rogerwilco: I definitely prefer how it is right now. It looks like the sidebar expands instead of opening a new panel.
-
@tarquin Ok, thanks for shedding some light onto this specific aspect. I will take a closer look at that (i.e. read up) and also my current uBlock Origin configuration.
My current uMatrix settings won't allow any cookies unless explicitly permitted. A bit tedious at times but that's a conscious decision I made. -

Sure, I guess most will understand what was meant by"gfs", then again, there'd be a few backdoors:
Acronym Finder - What does GFS stand for? -
Quick Commands are now very laggyโafter pressing F2 and typing a character, I have to wait a few seconds before the cursor and the character show up.

@gabevilela: Thanks!
