If only there wasn't the incessant bother of DRM/media/(whatever missing that breaks netflix) components to deal with, I'd agree with you. All the other points are good though.

While I love Vivaldi in Linux (using Manjaro) I can't find a way to fix the problem with the snapshot version not having installed the codecs or something to play HTML5 videos etc. What else should I install to fix the problem?

@lonm: Huh??? It has worked very well for several releases hasn't it? At least for official packages. There are no open bug reports that I am aware of.

P.S. We obviously cannot fix packages provided by others. Though happy to advise maintainers

@meymigrou: Where are you getting the package from? If Manjaro I presume you are not using official packages and this I would imagine is the issue. Run the included script update-ffmpeg (found within the Vivaldi install directory) as root or prefaced with sudo (as suggested by the automatic popup when media support is not configured), restart Vivaldi and let me know if you still have a problem.

Another HUGE thing missing is HWA for videos.
It's too bad, since patches exists for making Chr use HWA for videos (see https://launchpad.net/~saiarcot895/+archive/ubuntu/chromium-beta)

Vivaldi is not the best browsers for Linux.

It doesn't push sources completely and is impossible to build.

It won't listen to year-long complaint about hardware video decode / VAAPI, take a simple patch.

Vivaldi can be the best browsers for Linux. If you let it be.

I would go further, Vivaldi is on the right track to be the best browser ever, on any device.
Vivaldi Android is becoming great, and seamless sync with multiple profiles is awesome.
On Linux, UI performance is not on par with other browsers (eg. Opera), and the look and feel consistency could be improved.
Anyway, it's still a joy to use every day !

Vivaldi has been very solid for me on Linux. I can't remember the last time I had any major issues.

I agree with @Cqoicebordel that it would be great to see hardware acceleration for video decoding in Vivaldi.

It will be difficult for Vivaldi to take over from Firefox for most Linux users. Most Linux users have a strong attachment to Firefox and it is the default browser on many distributions. Of course, there are some users that refuse to give Vivaldi a chance because it is not open source.

Personally, I find Firefox painful to use. And relying on extensions for a lot of features is bad practice.

The only issue minor issue I have with Vivaldi on Linux is that it often does not open full screen with no space above the tabs. I know there were a lot of issues with this a year or two ago and it has improved (not sure if I should report it again). But, at least using Cinnamon, I still find it to be about 50/50 on whether the window opens as expected.

Installation on Windows10 / Ubuntu 18.04 / Android

For me great, sometimes Ubuntu does not want to run a video, but at least.

vivaldi-ffmpeg-codecs: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/vivaldi-ffmpeg-codecs/
vivaldi-widevine: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/vivaldi-widevine/

There's also the vivaldi-snapshot-ffmpeg-codecs, should I install this for the snapshot version? I know that vivaldi-ffmpeg-codecs are working great with the stable version. Going to open a ticket in the Linux forum later today.

@pavelbisik: Ditto. For me order of use is Pop_OS! 19.10 / Ubuntu 19.10 / Android / Win10. I don't remember the last time I had an issue. Probably when sync was first introduced.

@ikhider Vivaldi publishes its privacy policies. They could be sued for violating them. Vivaldi code is 100% auditable. You may read it end-to-end if you want to see what the browser is doing.

Yes, there will be a calendar, and it will be cal-dav compatible.

Of course their are gaps. Vivaldi is very young, and there will be gap-filling as long as it is in development - which one hopes will be after I'm dead and gone.
