@zeLounge
It is always a good idea as a new forum user to tell other user they are dump. You have no idea about my background, use Windows XP further and be happy.Cheers, mib

@Zalex108 Ouch! You didn't have to hit me so hard !!
(just kidding)Thx for these very interesting links.
.. the iceland one, although they've done interesting things, it still doesn't address the foundation of the issue, far from it. One will find the foundation in unspoken history (but still accessible), to see how the "ideas" were socialy implanted to become the [false] de facto, as strong as a religious belief. (here's a link that may be of interest: https://tinyurl.com/3d7bmfnk ).. the vigiaccess one, gratefull you pointed me there. Censorship has always been their tool of choice. A couple of centuries ago they could censor localy and be done. Today, they must use global tools. And unfortunately they are succeeding with the masses, and they're playing psychological warfare on "divergents"(1), and soon they're gonna play hard ball with laws and direct oppression, as the "majority" are still sleeping at the wheel.
(1) outside the crowd, critical, & always questionning. Not the Dem divergents!!
If you control the fear of the people, then you control the people.

SIDENOTE: for those who are unaware of the source and are convince that I'm calling them "dumb", the source of "You'll own nothing, and be happy" is the World Economic Forum, they made an ad that they have since pulled out, but did go viral on the net. Before jumping to conclusion, it might be a good idea to ask, confirm your conclusion.
Cheers

@zeLounge ok, now you got really boring, welcome to my ignore list

Apart from the Off Topic,
It relates with the force on change something that works.I guess W7 would still be working for long long time since most of the added things to 10/11 it's mostly the Store and the AI.
I guess following the Apple side with the Store and Siri but actually is something unnecessary to work or entertainment environment.
Linux has Stores too but seems Apple it's their reference. The Store would be useful but limited and controlled, so again, is mostly a Company gain not for both sides.
About the WEF, they're are all involved in The Big Scene.

Yes,
The Koch Postulates that were not been followed. It was just to briefly comment it, to continue on that, we'll need to move to the other 2 Topics instead.

@zeLounge , forgive my ignorance about your particular situation, but you must also be clear that no matter how many complaints and accusations you use in this forum, you are not going to change anything to the fact that little by little your equipment is going to become obsolete, things of life.
For me you can continue using a fax if it makes you happy, we can only give advice to update you in the least traumatic way possible, which naturally implies certain efforts on your part, what we cannot do is stop technological evolution or the system that drives it , we cannot force web pages to return to old formats, so that you can continue using them.
Welcome to the real world -
@user5765: "you'll own nothing and be happy". In the near future Windows will be always online, subscription based and you'll be forced to upgrade your hardware every year. Mark my words.

WRONG! You will own nothing, remember? So you don't have any hardware to be upgrade. Instead, you will keep paying subscription fee for each new/old smart device, plus paying MS/Apple/Google for the OS, & paying extras for any app you want to keep using in daily basis. They might even charge you via pay per hourly access thingy, like a parking slot. Basically, there will be nothing to buy, cause you can't afford to own anything, for there won't be any usable physical $$$. The only $$$ you get is digital currency that govern by the global/world bank - which can alter/freeze/erase all your digital currency at any moment. And yes, you don't even own your hard earned "digital $$$", cuz they will even charging you subscription fee for the privilege to "keep it" in daily basis! LOL
You can only subscribe to services or rent everything you want/need via the implantable microchip embedded inside your body - included clean water, food, breathable oxygen, & even random land you are stepping on, because everything is own by certain for-profit corporation/institution. The moment you can't pay with your limited digital currency or have a negative social credit, you lose "Right of access" to everything almost immediately - you are pretty much as good as dead if that happen to you! Welcome to 1984, this is the future we are gradually heading toward when good men continue choose to do nothing about it.
Ted Kaczynski is pretty much correct about the grim future, he took the extreme method to warn the world about it. But alas, everyone only focus on his misdeed & forgot about the important message he delivered via Unabomber Manifesto. Or maybe, some egotistic mad men use it as a blueprint try to create an "utopia"? It's already happening in China, so will it successfully spread around the world like the Wuhan virus?
WTF is Social Credit?

@yngve That's odd. I thought Opera had continued giving security and stability updates to old versions of Windows, well after Chrome had stopped.

If they did/do that, they would have to find and reapply ALL the removed code, maintain and debug it, and not the least resolve all the merge conflicts that will show up like clockwork when updating the code base.
The latter is a process that takes us 2+ days when doing it for Vivaldi, with just 100ish files conflicting (and keeping old patches in will cause a lot more of them), and is part of a process that takes 2+ weeks to complete for us.
But, in any case, Opera has the (large) number of developers needed to accomplish such a task.
Note that this is about supporting old OSes for a Chromium based browser. It would have been a completely different, and easier, task for Opera Presto (Opera 12 and earlier), since Opera controlled that code.

I just accept that it makes economic sense to upgrade my PC every ten years or so. Performance increases by an order of magnitude in that period.
My desktops are 13 and 11 years old. The 13-year-old desktop recently had its HDD replaced with a SATA SSD.
Debian boots and performs so much faster now from the SSD, that one would think it's a brand new PC.
The 11-year-old desktop is still on its OEM HDD (also running Debian), but I've purchased a second SATA SSD and plan to eventually install it.

Ah, I thought you were implying that they didn't.

@edwardp , very good decisions. A PC can survive more than a decade without problems, like any technical device with the corresponding care and maintenance. It's not that it stops being useful, because you don't want to change to a more suitable OS or upgrade. Since at the soft and OS level it does not depend on the requirements of the PC, but on the needs of the network in terms of new web formats and security aspects and exploits that exist in quantities of hundreds of thousands, where an obsolete OS is unable to fend.
The great advantage of Linux is that in its requirements, depending on the distro, the age and capacity of the PC is practically irrelevant and yet it has the necessary features to function with the latest applications, for example in our case Vivaldi. -
@Catweazle I actually gave up on Windows years ago. The 13-year-old desktop came with Windows Vista pre-installed and the 11-year-old came with Windows 7.
In both instances, after a while, but while both were still supported OS', Windows Update mysteriously stopped working. Both of them were displaying errors that this or that could not be updated due to this or that error and going through what I found online at the time to fix the errors, none of the solutions worked, so I went with Linux full-time and once Vista and 7 were no longer officially supported, I erased those partitions from the hard drives.
-
@edwardp not mysterious at all. Even 10 and 11 had devices with updates halted due lack of some core driver or some kind of bug. Unless there is a valid reason to enforce Windows, Linux is a good choice.

@Hadden89 , do you know Deepin 20? It's a real Windows 10/11 killer and only need 1 Gb RAM. It's a real beauty.
