Vivaldi should post some sort of tutorial to help win7&8 user to migrate to Linux smoothly
Well, which Linux Desktop shoudl user take? And unfortunately some users have Windows software that never will work on Linux (with WINE).
But… wait…
"Porting" Vivaldi to Linux is easy. Vivaldi Sync is the tool to get Vivaldi profile data from Windows onto Linux.- Backup on Windows the Vivaldi profile folder on some USB or other media
- Sync Vivaldi on Windows
- Do not forget to note Vivaldi Sync and extra encryption password
- Wait some minutes to get all synced
- Later on your Linux start Vivaldi
- Enable and login to Sync
- Enter extra encryption password
- Wait until all is synced
Thats all.

I update my previous post.
Perhaps, i will write a article next year in my blog, to tell users how to jump with Vivaldi browser onto Linux Desktop.
-
Not sure that is something Vivaldi should do, maybe would do but seems to much extra work.
Maybe a recompilation of articles/ videos on how to do it.
This would be done by the community and members able and disposed to do it.
There are already many YouTube videos about that, some more wide easy than others more technicals.
That would help or not, depending on the users

Well, maybe Vivaldi can begin with Manjaro - since it have Vivaldi as default browser already. Then Vivaldi can cooperate with more Linux distro to "adopt" millions of abandoned users by MS as they drop win7/8 support next year. After all, one man's trash is another man's treasure. If MS decided to sacrifice some loyal user in the name of greater profit, then Vivladi & Linux should take advantage of this situation for the greater good. LOL
-
When XP was deprecated, Firefox kept a version working on it.
This may happen again and many users would move to FF.
Let's see the avalanche of users asking why V is showing an Upgrade Banner or why some sites stopped working
-
@dude99 Vivaldi is default on a few Linux distros. But the majority would never consider it, since it’s not open source. It’s easier to just pack Firefox, most users will install a second or third browser anyway. It’s a bad match from this standpoint.

I don't think so, consider Fx decided going all woke & falling down harder & harder by the day - eventually someone need to take it's place within the Linux community. So, I think Vivaldi would be a good candidate, V might not be fully open source, but it's probably the best choice among the worst (if you consider all chromium browser are the worst). LOL
Diehard Linux user might think Fx is the last bastion of "goodguy" web browser, but unfortunately Fx is repeating it's predecessor history - stop being innovatively useful to it's user base (after Brendan Eich left), & then going fully woke just make it become irreverent even faster!
-
@dude99 Going woke… I don’t care about your political analysis.
It’s a browser with its own engine. It’s worth supporting. Without Vivaldi in the picture I’d be using it. I mean I have it installed, but seldom start it up.

I don't know why you are thinking it should be their task to tell anybody how to install linux, or any other OS, and how to configure it, but know that it's not their task.

The time has come

Poor people such as myself (on old legacy desktop) who can't move to any paid/free OS because their health and welfare depend on incompatible Windows software continually get screwed over what are ultimately greed induced decisions. I live in a building full of people who keep getting pushed off the tech treadmill and suffer directly for it. Doesn't matter to corporate what our lives depend on.
-
@d4l3d , it is certainly a problem if you depend on certain software that is no longer supported. The only solution is to keep Windows for this purpose for local use and dualboot a Linux distro to have a current OS to go online, this does not imply any cost, since Linux distros are free.
-
@Catweazle I've investigated all to the best of my ability. Without going into detail I have disabilities and unrelated limitations that preclude doing that (which is kind of the point) and no, I have no one to help.
-
@d4l3d What do you expect Vivaldi to do?
-
@d4l3d , because of your disabillities, which apps do you need? Maybe there are valid alternatives or even versions for Linux.
I know that not all users are computer savvy and for some the change may seem too complicated, even if it is not, and I am sure that here you can receive all the help in this regard.
For Example Q4OS is a lightwight Linux distro, very indicated for computer neophytes. You can Download and install it like an normal Windows app with it's own setup and it has an UI very similar to the one of Windows. -
@luetage If you believe the point of my post was to regret making it then, thank you for your kind consideration. That being said, the more appropriate question to the one you pose would be the obverse which is what most here are discussing. Please catch up.
-
@Catweazle I do appreciate your attempts to help but, I don't think you caught the gist of my problem. You're wrongly assuming I'm able to function with all faculties intact. I jump thru a lot of hoops just to post here.
I virtually never bring this up but I have a 160+ IQ so very few opportunities get past me and little intimidates me. I continually monitor my options. -
@d4l3d , sorry if you understood it this way, I have not doubted your mental abilities and your intelligence, but this has nothing to do with being ignorant on certain topics, we all are. It was simply intended as a suggestion not knowing your physical capabilities, pointing out options to the dilemma you have with the OS.
-
@d4l3d If you had read the replies here you would have realized by now it’s pointless to complain about it. Vivaldi doesn’t have the resources to support operating system versions Chromium doesn’t support. You can complain about it as much as you like, but it won’t change anything. I’m on Android 6 and from Chromium 110 on this won’t be supported anymore. I don’t blame Vivaldi for it, but my OEM. You should blame Windows, not Vivaldi.
