"Copy URL" button
-
I absolutely love the idea after using extension Copy Link Button on Firefox. Basically it adds a button in address bar to copy current URL in one click – in Vivaldi such a button could be placed near the QR-code and "Add to bookmarks" buttons:
-
@emvaized Right-click on the URL, Copy works fine for me. There are already too many buttons in the URL field.
Copy Page Address on Tab Context Menu would be better, as it allows users to copy the URL of background tabs and the active tab.
A Command for Copy Page Address would allow the URL to be copied from the page context menu, or with a keyboard shortcut or mouse gesture.
-
@pesala This would take 2 clicks, while such a button would take only one.
I would love to get rid of "qr-code" button which I don't use in favor of "copy url" button.

@emvaized See Settings, Address Bar, and disable:

I love the idea of this. This would be especially useful for people who have problems clicking in the address bar to copy the url. I have a friend who's hands can shake so badly at times that there is no way he can hi-lite and copy a url from the address bar and this would be a perfect solution.
-
@locutusofborg Wouldn’t a shortcut be the better way to do it in this circumstance?
-
@luetage I fear a mouse user will dislike shortcuts.

While i understand the efficiency and ease of use of 1-click vs 2, i fail to see how a tiny button is better/easier to click on than the whole of the address bar area that is available?
The entire URL highlights once you click anywhere on the address bar and then the context menu is something i would think most users are more than comfortable with.

the advantage of a button is, that you don't have to search for it (while you have to look at the right place at the context menu; yes I know, that you can strip down the menu until you only have copy adress but "most of the user" won't do it; and thank for reminding me to tidy up this particular context menu

As far as I understood, this extension adds button to the extensions bar, not to the address bar -

For the current address bar flow, you have to:
- Click on addressbar to highlight the url
- Right click on the selected url
- Find the 'Copy' item in context menu
- Click on 'Copy' item
For the proposed button:
- Click the button
It is really handy for users who copy current page URL a lot of times during the day.
-
@emvaized It is not that hard, and if you edit the menu it is even easier.
- Right-click on the URL field
- Copy (move this item to the top of the menu if you do this a lot)
-
@emvaized Yeah, but this is only one side of the coin. There is a copy page address menu item in the context menu of every page. Moreover it’s possible to create a command chain and therefore a keyboard shortcut to accomplish the same thing. See ☛ https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/509249. Personally I copy the page address by pressing
Y
. It could also be a mouse gesture. Both solutions are far superior to clicking some icon. Moreover you are overlooking that a solution was already presented to you by @shifte, in the form of an extension. I’d also like to remind you that we have a forum board for custom modifications to the browser. It’s pretty simple to create a button that copies the page address with some Javascript, Vivaldi gives us that kind of freedom. What I’m getting at is that there are far more pressing matters than a request that already has half a dozen possible solution, even the one that you are looking for.
-
@pesala Thanks, I'm aware of context menu customisation. It's not the matter of context menu being 'hard', it's the matter of having the quicker alternative.
-
@luetage
I'm not looking for another ways of performing this action, I'm looking for a specific functionality which fits my habits and workflow the best, considering that I've been using it this way in Firefox for months already. If we follow your logic, at least half of the current Vivaldi's functionality could be thrown away – why having an option to show tab bar on the side, if you can use it on top just fine? Why have the option to customise context menus, if the stock one works just fine?
-
@emvaized In my opinion this has little chance to go through any time soon. So you got three options: Wait it out, use an alternative solution, or try to implement a mod with this exact functionality. Seems like you are fine with waiting it out though, so good luck. Might be years.
-
@emvaized Having spent about six years following feature requests, I can assure you that changing your workflow will be much quicker than waiting for this to be implemented.
Speed depends on using muscle memory. The URL field is bigger than any icon, so hitting it is much faster.
Try it for a week, and you will see for yourself how much quicker the suggested workaround is than hitting a 16 pixel button.
By all means, don't change your habits if you don't want to, but that is not a solution to the issue in the foreseeable future.
-
My method is superior...

This was my point with regards to the post quoted about a user with shaky hands. A bigger hit target (even with multiple clicks) will in almost all scenarios be a better option over a smaller 1-click option.
