Request: open mail window AND panel with one click/shortcut
-
Hi,
( FIRST: HUUUGE THANKS FOR CARRYING ON THE TORCH WITH VIVALDI AND MAIL! YOU ROCK! )
a request: is there a way to have a button or shortcut to open the email-PANEL and at the same time open the email-WINDOW (the INBOX) with a single click? I like to have all my email-folders, the unread-counters, AND a list of E-Mails AND the first E-Mail visible at the ready, with a single action. I find it confusing that it requires two actions: to have, say, a webpage open and to have the unrelated email-Panel open on the left and then i still have to select a mail-folder to open the mail-window. OR I find it it especially confusing to have the email-window open without its email panel and then i still have to open the mail panel. I am forced to complete two actions: CTRL-SHIFT-M ++ CTRL-ALT-Y . And i constantly have this double take where i have to think what to do next.
I am using M2 for 20 years now, and that further ingrained the need to have all email stuff open with one click.
kind regards,
Stephan -
@progrocket Ctrl+Shift+M opens the Mail Panel. Why do you need to use Ctrl+Alt+Y as well?

Hello Pesala, thank you for responsing. I tried my best to explain the answer to your question in detail in my post above. I don't know how to put it in better words. (not my native language). Would you please read it again?

@progrocket I keep my email client in a separate window on my Secondary monitor (email can only be shown in one window).
I leave the panel toolbar always open, and collapsed the mail panel when I don't need it, e.g. when watching video in another tab on the secondary window.
I leave the Received mail folder in the mail panel focused so that I just need to switch tabs to read my incoming mail and deal with it by replying, mark as read, label it, or delete it permanently with Shift+Delete.
If I need to compose a new mail I click the Contacts icon on the Panel Toolbar, write the mail, send it, then refocus the mail panel, received folder.
Similarly, if I want to view my bug reports, I use the Bug Label, then refocus the Received folder when done.
I have shortcuts define as:
- Ctrl+1 = Bookmarks
- Ctrl+2 = Mail
- Ctrl+3 = Contacts
- Ctrl+4 = Downloads
- Ctrl+5 = Notes, etc.

I can understand the OPs request - one big plus of an integrated email client is that it is in the same window and not another, which is what I can have with any mail / browser combo. As a laptop-on-couch user in my free time there also is no such thing as a secondary monitor or space for another window.
Mail is rather pointless without the panel, and while I often have the mail panel open idly (for fast access to unread when I want to switch to mail, which I have in a pinned tab), the mail panel alone is also of limited use.
Saying this and searching for another thread I notice that the two of us already had this discussion
here https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/477489
@ProgRocket the next release will introduce command chains, without having tested (only on android right now) it should be possible to assign "open panel" and "open mail tab" to such a command chain to make you happy.
I would also like to use this thread to point interested parties to two suggestions that are related: an optional slim mail panel with all essential mail functionality right in the panel https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/60024/email-at-a-glance-panel-incl-list-and-preview-unread-panel?_=1627341379542
as well as an optional panel to display mail a little like messengers do in a panel https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/55078/panel-to-show-certain-mail-like-messenger-conversations-aka-spike-email-delta-chat
-
To simplify the OPs request (and WildEnte's summary) - I think what's requested is that the mail panel should open together with the mail tab showing the
inboxunread view.So when you click the mail button on the panel bar, you get the complete mail UI in one go (and presumably it can all close with one action as well).
As the OP mentions M2 I do remember an option for something similar there

@mossman I don't see the benefit of this at all. My shortcut opens the mail panel with the last used folder in view.
- Generally, that is the Received mail so that I can quickly check recent messages, whether they have been read or not. Others may prefer to use the Unread folder. I get that.
- If I was last checking my bug reports, then the Bug label folder will have focus. It would be annoying if the Received folder always got focus.
- If anyone wants to do everything with the keyboard then having to use more than one shortcut is unavoidable. At least one will have to use (for example) Ctrl+Shift+M, followed by down cursor a few times.
The only problem I see here is that the OP is hiding the Panel Toolbar with F4 instead of hiding the mail panel with Ctrl+Shift+M. What Ctrl+Alt+Y does has not been answered. It is not a default shortcut.

Your use case may not be typical. I can see plenty of people just wanting to look what's in their unread mail every now and then and can use that to then go see their sent mail etc. afterwards.
I agree with OP that if you don't know what new mail has come in you need to do two actions (open panel, open unread) to check. It's not very intuitive, and making your own key bindings etc. shouldn't be necessary for casual users who might want this.

I feel well understood by Wildente and Mossmans replies. And there is nothing much to add. Yes, iam looking for a one-click (one-shortcut) solution to open both mail-panel and mail-window at once, to-be-in-my-full-email-client, without having to think about it.
Was hoping they could add an option in the settings like "Always open mail-panel when focussing mail window" OR "Always open mail window when focussing mail panel" ... but i haven't thought this through – probably leads to weird behaviour.
"@ProgRocket the next release will introduce command chains, without having tested (only on android right now) it should be possible to assign "open panel" and "open mail tab" to such a command chain to make you happy."
This is exellent. Glad to hear it and looking forward to it. This will be the solution then. I can wait. (I am sure they are on track then to bring back the old customizability of Opera12, where you could share these command-chains in the form of custom-buttons and drag and drop them almost anywhere in the UI ... good times back then)
Sorry about CTRL-ALT-Y if that was misleading, i thought it was a standard keyboard shortcut to open the mail window, but i must have made it myself out of nescessity.
Thanks all.

@progrocket
Hi, 4.1 stable include chains, I have created a "Open Mail" chain in vivaldi://settings/qc/Then added a keyboard shortcut:
Work perfect.
You can add a single shortcut but you have may delete a already existing one.Cheers, mib

@mib2berlin Yes, i got the update today and made a chain, works like a charm. If you put a "Sidepanel-Command first" then it won't accidentally close the Mail-panel if it is already open and you call the chain two or more times.
