Vivaldi won't open in Linux Mint
-
Wise Vivaldi users,
I'm a Linux Mint user and have enjoyed Vivaldi for years. Today it no longer opens. I've tried launching it every way I know of and I get no response.
Here's what I've done so far to try to solve the problem.
- Checked for updates
- Updated the Kernel
- Verified that other browsers work.
- Verified that the problem persists after a reboot.
- Confirmed it wasn't isolated to one user on my system.
The next logical thing in my mind is to uninstall + reinstall. I've held off on this up to now as I've not backed up my bookmarks in a long time, and wasn't sure if I'd lose them by doing such.
I'm running Mint Cinnamon 20.1
Kernel 5.8.0-45
Using an Intel i7-6700
15.5 Gib memory
Geforce GTX 1070Any insight you all can provide would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,
Welcome to Vivaldi's Forums!Usually, uninstall isn't needed.
First of all, BackUp your Data.If You know where your Profile is located, go ahead, if not, go to
~/.config/Vivaldi
| If did as Snap, do it from the New Profile atVivaldi://About
, from there one Folder above.Follow the Tip below to know about the Files.
--
You can Run V with a command line to browse til fix the problem:
Create a Clean Profile from Profile Manager:
- Locate a Shortcut of your
installation
- Create a copy and rename it to
Profile Manager
- Right click and Properties on it
- At the very end of
Command
, add:- [A Space]
--profile-directory
- [A Space]
- Save & Open that ShortCut and
Add Person
- [Test / Emergency / ...] - Check if it works
--
If works,
Once Original Profile is Backed up, you can try deleting some files from File Manager:
Sessions, Cache folder, Code Cache...
And check in between opening your Default Vivaldi Profile.Assure about the BackUp before any deletion.

@JavaSama2021
Hi, you can start with a temp profile: /usr/bin/vivaldi-snapshot --user-data-dir="/tmp/VIV-TST" &
if you use snapshot or use /usr/bin/vivaldi for stable.
If Vivaldi start it is may something broken in your default profile.
Check: https://help.vivaldi.com/article/full-reset-of-vivaldi/
to get your bookmarks, passwords and some more back to a new profile.
If you used sync it is much easier.Cheers, mib

@JavaSama2021 Hi, it could be that Vivaldi didn't close right for whatever reason in your system and it remained a "zombie" process in the background hindering the launch of new instances, so check your System Monitor (or how it is called in Mint) for inactive vivaldi-bin processes and kill them
, then try again.

Thank you both for your replies. I hadn't expected such a quick response.
That said, I'm woefully lost. I'm an oddity for a Linux user and have next to no command line experience. I'm not sure how to perform or access any of the guidance that was relayed to me. I tried searching for the directory via Mint's Nemo file manager with Sudo privileges " one of the few command line things I know how to do" and I wasn't able to locate anything that made sense to me.I found in USR>BIN 2 different files that seem relevant.
Vivaldi-stable
&
VivaldiAs to specific questions on the advice:
- for this: Create a Clean Profile from Profile Manager:
. Locate a Shortcut of your https://vivaldi.com installation
. Create a copy and rename it to Profile Manager
. Right click and Properties on it
. At the very end of Command, add:
. [A Space]--profile-directoryI'm not sure if by shortcut you mean a launcher like the Linux version of a Windows Shortcut on a desktop, or if this is something else that I'm not understanding. I went with the assumption that I understood, and upon altering the command as you suggested in the shortcut, It too fails to launch when I attempt to run it. The shortcut/launcher I created from the main menu seems to point to the 1st of the 2 files I'd found browsing the directory, but neither of the 2 seems operational.
I ran into the same problem of not knowing the command line with the temp profile suggestion.
As to the Zombie Process one: I checked and didn't see anything that looked related. I'd thought that might be the obstacle initially as well, which is why my go to was to reboot initially. Though admittedly I'm not 100% sure that would be flushed out with the boot, so I double checked after you'd suggested such.
Thanks again for the continued assistance everybody!

AFAIK, I just used Thunar.
You'll need to enable "View Hidden Files", then you can access through the Folders.
(Using the full path maybe it's unnecessary)
Home/.config/Vivaldi

Even with the added support, I came up short following everybody's advice. Couldn't find the config file for whatever reason, and the launcher part wouldn't cooperate. I'm pleased to report though that the uninstall / Reinstall did resolve the problem, and I kept my bookmarks, saved passwords, etc... so all is well!
Thank you to everyone that offered their support. I've not had issues with Vivaldi prior to this, but I'll definitely keep the forums in mind should problems come up in the future!

Now, being you have access, follow the Tip to backup, avoid and fix future problems, if any.
