Long delay (60 sec) and frozen after clicking on link to open new tab
-
I've encountered this repeatedly with both the stable version of 3.5 and the snapshot version 3.5.2131.8 (64-bit).
I click on a link in an email in Thunderbird 78.5.1 (64-bit). The desktop switches to the already-open Vivaldi with multiple tabs open. It does not launch the new tab but sits there. I am unable to do anything else. I wait for as much as 60 seconds, and then the tab is created and launches.I cleaned out cache, history, application cache. No change.
I am running one extension: Dark Reader. The issue exists whether I have this extension enabled or not.
Never saw this on 3.4 releases.
Anyone else see this kind of behavior?
Followup: Same problem exists when I run 3.5.2131.8 (64-bit) installed as Standalone. Links cause the freeze. However, I now discovered that when it's frozen, if I click on the Close (X) button to close the Vivaldi window, and then click Cancel, the desired tab instantly appears.

@wrjenness
Hi, some user report issues with 3. party security applications and even with defender.
Try to disable it for a minute for testing.Cheers, mib
-
Thanks @mib2berlin . I'm not running any 3rd party security apps unless you count HostsMan, which I've been running on my systems for easily 10 years.
I'll try disabling Defender at some point to see if it makes a difference on the standalone installation.
In the meantime, without any other changes, I uninstalled 3.5.2131.8 and reinstalled 3.4.2066.106 into the same profile folder and the problem is gone. I'll probably stick with this 3.4 setup as my daily driver for a while, since I have no real compelling reason to upgrade right now, and I can't operate properly with the problem introduced by 3.5.
-
I can confirm: without any 3rd-party but with adblockplus and mailvelope plugins active
most of the time the browser works, but opening a new tab can freeze it for some time
I'm using Bitdefender at home and Kaspersky Enterprise on work.Definitely no Vivaldi-Sync problem.
Currently testing some things mentioned here https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/54209/netflix-is-heavily-laggy-since-the-last-update/13
now tested so far: Hardware Accelerator must be switched OFF and browser needs a restart
any animations don't matter -
Thought I'd revisit this problem with a couple of 3.5 versions that I reported back in December
on 3.7.2218.3 (Official Build) (64-bit) standalone.Same result.
When I have this set as my default browser, I go into my Thunderbird Mail 78.8.0 (64-bit),
and click on a link that is inside a received email. The screen focus returns to Vivaldi
but it just sits there. It does not open the requested tab. If I try to click on another open tab, it just sits there
and will not change to the selected tab.
If I switch back to Thunderbird or another running application, and then return to the Vivaldi window,
NOW the long-ago requested tab has appeared and the focus is on that new tab.I have remained on 3.4.2066.106 (Stable channel) (64-bit) installed as my default browser
because it does not exhibit this problem. No extensions are enabled. Windows 10 64-bit v. 20H2 with Dark color scheme.

@wrjenness
Hi, the problem with this issue is it only a few user report lagging or other problems with Vivaldi.
I use Vivaldi mail client so can not test this but there are some settings/other make sometimes trouble.- Third Party Anti-Virus Software does not work/block Vivaldi after update
- Hardware Acceleration issues because Chromium update blocks GPU
- Dark or own Theme
- +500 tabs open
If I find some time I can check with Thunderbird but I guess I cant reproduce it on my system.
Cheers, mib
EDIT: OK, test need only 5 minutes, install Thunderbird, add account, open mail, click link > Vivaldi open new tab in < 1 second.
EDIT2: Windows 10 Pro, latest. Vivaldi 3.7.2218.3 / Chrome 89.0.4389.76 -
I thought I would revisit this problem that I reported on 3.5 stable back on 12 Dec 2020.
I now have 3.8.2259.37 (Stable channel) (64-bit) running as my default browser.
I click on a URL in an email in Thunderbird 78.10.0 64-bit, it switches to the open Vivaldi window and sits there.
I just did this and if I wait 52 seconds without doing anything else, then the requested URL appears in a new tab.If instead, after it brings Vivaldi to the focus, I switch to another running application such as back to Thunderbird, and then switch back to Vivaldi, the requested URL is now visible in a new tab.
-
Thanks. The problem I have is with Vivaldi already open. I always have Vivaldi already open with about 10 tabs active when I click on a link in Thunderbird. You state that you tested it without Vivaldi running when you click the link.

Hi,
If not already,
Try on a New
's Profile:
- "Right side" |
Rename it as Tests or something related, and use it as a Clean Profile, to test without custom configurations that can alter the original operation.
Ensure to close the Default Profile when testing to avoid conflicts.
Since the result, check:
- Active Flags / Experiments or Switches
- Ad Blocker - Tip
- Site Data
- Clean Cache
- Extensions - Tip
- Custom Menus
Or fill in a Bug Report and please, add the VB# to the topic for follow up.

@wrjenness No such problem here. What sort of system are you on? Do you run any extensions?

@Zalex108 Thanks for the suggestion to start with a new profile. I tried it, and it initially looked like it fixed the problem. But upon further usage, the delay/freeze started even with the new profile. I went back to my old profile, and deleted all browser data except for passwords and form autofill data, and the problem still appears there.
I'm running Win 10 64 bit on a Thinkpad W530 with 16GB RAM on a Lenovo Mini-Dock Plus with 2 identical 4K Philips monitors connected via DisplayPort, each running at 3860x2160 @ 30Hz.
I now think that running Vivaldi on this dual-monitor configuration has something to do with the problem. When I use my left monitor as my "main" monitor with Vivaldi there, I see the problem. I can get the external link to appear if I quickly double click on the Maximize and Restore Down buttons on the Vivaldi title bar. However, when I move the Vivaldi main window to my right monitor, with Thunderbird in the left monitor, I do not have to do this and the requested URL comes right up. At least so far. Somewhat strange.
Upon further review...if I now move Thunderbird to the right monitor where Vivaldi is, and click on a URL in Thunderbird, the delay problem reappears. So it seems to be caused by having the V window and the TBird window on the same monitor.
-
@wrjenness And yet, I only have one monitor, with both V and TBird on it. So, something about dual monitors in combo with other factors?
-
@Ayespy The only extension that I run is Dark Reader. The problem exists with or without it enabled. But see my reply to Zalex108 for details about what I think it's related to. It would be interesting (to me) to hear if others who run Thunderbird and Vivaldi on the same monitor in a dual-monitor configuration also see the issue that I see.

Reporting same Error, I'm using Outlook 2019 and Vivaldi as my main browser on the main screen
Every time I click on a link in an e-mail, I have to alt-tab back to outlook (or another program) and then back to vivaldi to get the page to display.
The title in the taskbar is actually from the requested page, but it always displays the last open tab before that and I can't click on anything on that page.
I've already tried the "new profile" as well as disabling my add-ons and firewall/anti-virus, but nothing changes
-
I'm having the exact same problem too. I've been using Vivaldi and Outlook 365 for a long time and this problem only started within the last several days.
Vivaldi is open, so is Outlook. I go to an email in Outlook that contains an HTML link and click the link. Vivaldi jumps in front and just hangs. It is totally unresponsive and I cannot click anything - although I can minimize it.
If I minimize, or click another open application, which sends Vivaldi down to the taskbar, when I click on Vivaldi again it opens up and the webpage that I clicked the link for is now open and everything is okay.
-
Can confirm that this is a continuing issue and has been across updates over at least the last 6 months. The problem is in Vivaldi, as it occurs when clicking links from multiple external apps (several email clients, WhatsApp, Microsoft Word, NotePad++, and more) with no extensions enabled.
Occurs on multiple-monitor systems with Windows 10, but does not occur on single monitor systems with Windows 10.
To recreate in Windows 10: Vivaldi browser maximized. Then open email client or other app with link and maximize on the same monitor. Click a link in an email, and Vivaldi comes to front but hangs. Without user action, the hang time appears to be perpetual. Pressing alt-tab twice immediately breaks the hang. Pressing the Windows key to show the start menu breaks the hang. This is highly repeatable, with the same behavior every time the link is clicked.
If Vivaldi is on a different monitor than the other app with link, the hang does not occur.

I'm wondering if it could be anything to do with Vivaldi checking if a link is safe before opening?
-
@xyzed Vicaldi downloads regularly (daily?) a blocklist of malware domains and testing for malisious target is done fast.
Cpuld it be some security software on your PC or extension in Vivaldi causing this delay?
-
@doctorg I'll try to check. For me it's become intermittent so difficult to get to the bottom of. It's been good all day and then just 2 or 3 links froze Vivaldi and now it's OK again.
