Better functionality for quoting parts of posts
-
I find that I quite often want to quote a specific part of a post, rather than the entire thing (or just the poster's name). Sometimes it is possible to select the relevant part and then click the "Quote" button next to the post, and the reply box opens with only that part quoted. However, this doesn't always work and instead quotes the post in full (ignoring my selection). Today it didn't work once, for example, and I tried it quite a few times. This gets quite annoying, since now I have to look through all the non-formatted markdown to find the part I actually wanted to quote, and manually delete the rest.
Another forum I frequent has a little box pop up next to the text after you make a selection, with a new "Quote" button. This makes it very clear that you actually can quote only a part of the text, and that this button is designed to only ever Quote part of the text (not sometimes quote the selected part and sometimes the full text):
I would love to see something similar here on Vivaldi's forum as well. Just as a quality of life thing.

So did I, but I could not reproduce the problem. It only seems to happen if I lose the selection before clicking the reply or quote links.
The quote link can be used while editing a reply to:
quote only a part of the text
One can optionally delete the source of the quote if it was made by the same user.

It’s funny that you bring that up now, because I believe the quote feature has worked marvelously over the last year, while before the behavior could be inconsistent. Hasn’t failed me yet.

Tip: To select several words, double-click on the first word to select it, then drag right to select more. Shift+click on the last word of a longer selection.

I think he just wanted to show that it works, without any reason for quoting exactly that text…
As I see, it only quotes the text w/o the formatting that’s behind it (e.g. Tip should be in bold now). This is where the quoting should surely be improved.

@potmeklecbohdan Well yes, but I really selected and quoted with keyboard only.

Well, it hasn't work a single time for me the last 3-4 days. And occasionally before then as well.

@Komposten It is clear from your animation that the text is getting deselected before you click the reply link.
Dodgy mouse? Interfering extension? It does not seem to be a fault with the forum or we would all be seeing it.
-
@Pesala The text is deselected when the mouse button is clicked down. Not a dodgy or faulty mouse. I also tried in the latest soprano version (which has 0 extensions, 0 modifications, and virtually all settings at default except for a couple of key binds) and the same exact thing happens there. This is consistent with how it works on all other sites in Vivaldi, including the one I posted a screenshot from in the OP (which was from a XenForo forum).
I also did a test with Edge, and it seems like clicking down on links after selecting text does not clear the selection in that browser. I guess that is the way it is supposed to work also in Vivaldi, but it clearly doesn't.
The way XenForo handles is still superior to Vivaldi's way, though, since XenForo still quotes correctly even when clicking the reply/quote button deselects the text.
