Add deepL as usual translation
-
I use the google translate extension which allows me to translate web pages with one click. It would be really great to be able to do without Google and do the same thing with deepL.
-
I have set Bing Microsoft Translator as a web panel. This lets me easily translate any text or page. What is so special about DeepL ?
J’utilise l’extension de traduction google qui me permet de traduire les pages Web en un seul clic. Il serait vraiment génial d’être en mesure de faire sans Google et faire la même chose avec deepL.

Deepl, like Google translate, is proprietary soft (freemium). The real alternative would be Apertium which is FOSS.
It can be added, as @Pesala suggests, without problem to the web panel.
As an extension, at least for me, the best one is ImTranslator, which includes 4 search engines, (Google, Microsoft, Yandex and one of its own.), Dictionary and voice, phrases and entire pages from the context menu..Another FOSS translators alternatives:
https://crow-translate.github.io/
https://saladict.crimx.com/en/ (Chrome extension, inline translator) (Originally in Chinese, but any language can be configured, it has 8 translation engines and you can add 24 more) -

It is a very good translator that often translates better than Google translate. DeepL is very good at looking at the contex and thus offering a very human translation to to say.
@vignali Though I would also like to see DeepL beeing build in, everybody prefers their own translation engine. Therefor buildin-in a specific one is not prefered I think. I also have deepL as a webpanel and that works fine for me. Maybe a tip, they have a windows version of their engine which allows your to double presse ctrl + c and it automatically translates the coppied content. I have that one to.

@Vincent500
did you have managed it, to use deepl in the panel with their mobile view? so the translation areas are located vertical?
here it doesn't make a difference to set the panel to mobil or desktop view, the textareas are horizontally side by side each time -

I personally use the side panels as floating windows so an opened panels slides over the webpage. In that case, right click the deepL panel, click use custom width and draw the panel wider. In that way, the horizontal rendering of the page works fine. I thought that is the only way around.

@Vincent500
thanks for your answer. I used the custom width since installation of the panel -
The question is the interface. Google translate allows you to translate a web page directly without having to cut and paste, which is sometimes tricky on a web page. DeepL is an excellent translation software, perhaps the best. A strong integration with Vivaldi could, why not, allow the same thing as Google, with a context menu - or even a simple keyboard shortcut. And deepL also has the advantage of not being owned by Google.

Although Deepl is a good translator, no one doubts it, I see it difficult to add it as a function in Vivaldi, since, as I said before, Deepl is proprietary soft, which implies that Vivaldi, to include it, will have to pay a license, losing it's gratuitousness.
Therefore, the inclusion of a translator in Vivaldi, by definition, can only be a FOSS translator: -
One of the biggest issues with DeepL is it's lackluster language support. Only 12 languages so far compared to Google's 100+.
It's also fairly expensive compared to others, IIRC. Though, I guess you pay for quality since the translations it gives for the languages it does support are some of the best machine translations out there.
-
@Komposten, Google translate is bad for some languages, for example Spanish <> other are the worst. For this in IM Translator I use most the Bing or Yandex translator, which are more correct.
-
I also recommend QTranslate is an external browser program but works both in the browser and in other programs. Creates a popup as IM Translator and contains 20 translators including Babylon, DeepL, Google, Microsoft, Yandex, etc.
The only flaw is that it only works with Windows and does not translate the entire page. The translators in the bottom bar are of course customizable.
-
@Pesala Tech giants Google, Microsoft and Facebook are all applying the lessons of machine learning to translation, but a small company called DeepL has outdone them all and raised the bar for the field.
Its translation tool is just as quick as the outsized competition, but more accurate and nuanced than any we’ve tried.

@stardepp I believe you, but this Feature Request will probably never be implemented for the reasons stated.
DeepL obviously have a valuable product in which they have invested a lot of resources. They are not going to give it away for free. Bing and Google are not really free either. They profit from users' data.
-
Deepl also has a inofficial Chrome Extension Open Source
Another good extensión (Made in Germany) is Mate Translator, 103 langages (no Google), works similar to IMTranslate (context menu, words, frases and whole page, very correct, and a very good privacy policy (no logs, no trace, anonym data colect similar to Vivaldi privacy, which you can delete in settings)
-
@Pesala I recommend that you try DeepL thoroughly and compare it directly with Google Translator and Microsoft.

We released the first version of the translation feature in the Snapshot version of Vivaldi. Go check it out and share your feedback in the Snapshot blog post's comment section.
