Can't restore passwords from vivaldi
-
Hello.
Unfortunately i had to reinstall windows without warning because of bluescreen of death.
I managed to copy my whole users/username/appdata folder via command promt to another partition which contains the vivaldi files.
i copied every content from "users/username/appdata/local/vivaldi/user data/default" into the new vivaldi install folder to the same adress.
with this i could restore all my saved links, bookmarks, settings.
but the most important things are missing! all my passwords are gone.
why arent my passwords restores when i copied everything over? are they saved in a special file?
please help, it would be a huge pain if all the passwords are gone.
sorry for the english, im not a native speaker. -
@stefs Welcome to the forum and sorry for issue.
Vivaldi Browser Help Page can be accessed by hitting F1.Please, have a look at the article Back Vivaldi Data. Just a note, the backup has to be 1st, hence I can guarantee you will recover your passwds.
Sorry for the issue and please let us know if it works.

yes, i have the whole default folder from the old vivaldi installtion copied over to my new vivaldi installation.
what to do now to restore the passwords?
the article says: Login Data – website passwords. Note: This file is encrypted and is only usable on the machine that created it.
i am still on the same machine, just a new windows installation. how do i get my passwords back now? -
no this cant be true.
there must be a way to decrypt the login data file.
how could the devs do something like that?
in firefox you could restore everything with the files.
there must be some way.
please tell me how. -

Unfortunately it's not possible, as the Backup was not done before the new Win install.

in this post, the mod says it is possible, because when you copy all the files over you copy the file with the encryption key as well.
it is only 11 months old. did they change anything or why do you say it is not possible?
i really need those passwords. please there must be some way. -
@stefs The post you read is related to MacOS, not Windows unfortunately.

Sorry to say they are gone forever. The only way to recover your passwords are to use sync and/or a password manager.
I suggest using both. The one thing which caused them to be lost is your clean re-install of Windows. Even if you backed-up your profile you would have lost the "log-in" data due to a new Windows install. Now, nothing can be done to help you. Did you by any chance write them down in a notebook? I write all my passwords down in a notebook...always.Since you reinstalled Windows there is no way to decrypt the login data locally. The devs had nothing to do with you re-installing Windows. As far as Firefox goes, if you had used sync in Vivaldi your problems would be solved with a simple two step log-in. There is "no way". To "tell you how", is to suggest you use sync, a password manager and write them down.
No matter how much we feel for you there is nothing we can do or suggest other than what has already been said.

That is a restriction of Windows if you did no restore your Windows user compeltly.
yes i have the whole windows users folder backed up.
everything in users/username/appdata and every folder and file inside it.
how do i get the passwords now? -
well seems i have to learn it the hard way.
this is an insanely stupid design decision to make it that way with encrypted files linked to windows copy.
anyone out there, who is forced to reinstall windows because of stupid bluescreens or other windows shit will lose their passwords.
i will switch back to firefox.
im fed up with this stupid browser. -

Your fail was to use Windows and not knowing what a backup of Windows account really means.
no my fail was to use vivaldi in the first place. never should have changed from firefox.
I wish you a good journey. Bye.
i will have.
your arrogance makes it very easy to leave this community.
thank you for nothing and good bye. -

That is a low blow indeed, don't be that girl, please. I thought you were better than this.

@stefs There is so much I want to say. But I won't. Nobody on this thread was arrogant...nobody.
As @Gwen-Dragon said, "I wish you nothing but the best." FYI, Firefox isn't that perfect. Each and every browser has their shortcomings. As do each and every user.
Not a single forum member claims to be perfect. We claim to be as helpful as the person asking for help.

You may go to Nirsoft dot com and have a look for password recovery.
The Nirsoft utility will Export your passwords to a text, .CSV, XML or HTML file. It also allows for export from an external drive or a profile not in the default location. I do not know that Chromiun/Vivaldi has a function to Import them after such a disaster. (Perhaps a future option for Vivaldi?)
An option if you use a KeePass type manager is that these products will import a CSV file.
Personally I just Export to CSV, from which I create an encrypted spreadsheet.[EDIT] Pardon me there are many options in "vivaldi://flags", just search for passwords. I have not looked into them so I am not sure how or if they work yet.
