Option to ASCII encode search strings
-
Some pages require special characters in the search to be ASCII encoded to function properly.
-
@jberentsson Please clarify.
Do mean Match Accents for Find in Page or something else?
-
No, sorry. I meant the custom search.
The search engine on http://timarit.is is an example of this.
-
If you mean the possibility to search for things like "sósia" while typing "sosia", then that's got more to do with the server and how it handles the requests than with anything the browser can do...
-
Thanks. This is the error I see on searching for some known text on the website with that search engine.
-
@Pesala I'm curious, what did you do? I have no such problem:
-
- I went to the site
- I added the search engine
- I copied some text from the site and pasted it here
Í nokkrum tilvikum hafa eigendur höfundarréttar takmarkað birtingu efnis á vefnum og eru þá ekki birtir nýjustu árgangar viðkomandi blaða (t.d. síðustu þrjú ár Morgunblaðsins).
- I selected it in the post preview
- I searched for it with the search engine from context menu
-
Ok, I hadn't understood the post was about adding a website as a search engine... I can confirm the behavior you describe...
When I search directly on the website, the string shows up URL encoded in the address bar. If I search using the search engine shortcut, the string shows up exactly in the address bar - apparently the website is not prepared for that (nor should it be - I agree all non-ASCII characters should be URL encoded, shouldn't even be an option).
