What is stopping you from using V all the time?
-
@luetage My role is to always let users speak of their issues. But since we cannot develop any faster than we are, and since user concerns take time to resolve, we have no option but to counsel patience. There is no such possibility as "Oh, sorry. I'll drop everything and fix that right now."
-
@luetage So here is an example:
https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/24707/open-items-from-history-list-in-background/3
Read the comments and arguments of users here from top to bottom. User wants a feature that "every" browser has (and I suppose that may be correct) but that I have never heard of and never used in some 28 years or so of browsing in everything from Netscape to IE to Firefox, Opera, Chromium, Chrome, Otter, Vivaldi, to what-have-you. I have no use for the feature, no desire to see it or to use it, and no way to fit it into my work flow.
Another user claims it is "fundamental" to browser usability, stating "It is basic functionality and absolutely very easy to make, maybe 10 minutes for programmer." Clearly, we have a browser developer here, with knowledge that is superior to the knuckleheads that build Vivaldi, since our devs have no sense of fundamentals, priorities, user needs, or how to code.
So what to do with something like this? All there is, is to offer a workaround and/or invite the user to submit a feature request, file a bug report, or be patient. No one, and I mean no one, who reads or comments on the forums can say "Oh, sorry. I'll build that for you today." It may or may not be a reason a specific user does not use Vivaldi all the time - but every single feature that every other browser has and that new users expect to be present, simply cannot be top priority and worked on within hours or minutes of reporting, when you have a small team and goals that are not to be the same as everyone, but rather different from everyone.
That's why I advise helping users to become patient, if they are not already.
-
But any reason why a user cannot switch to Vivaldi as their default browser has to make it onto the "to do" list, and we just have to get as much of it done as we can, when we can.
-
@treego I still use Vivaldi of late about 99.5% of the time, though! It's terrific!
-
@ayespy All, I think this thread ("what's stopping you...") is actually really useful. It's not exactly heavily used so most people aren't posting here as a way of publicizing their pet peeve, and so I think it's doing what its name implies: letting people who would use V all the time say why they aren't. It's identifying things in the tail of the feature request distribution which really do stop the show for some users. I suspect that most of those who post here ARE V fans who check back fairly regularly to see whether their particular showstopper has been fixed. I'm not saying that these items are obviously higher priority than any others, but the fact that someone chooses (no - NEEDS) to use Firefox or Edge instead of V must have signal in it somewhere.
-
For me it is the huge copy / paste bug on macOS others have reported.
-
@rsaeks I have found that the Mac version is really behind the windows version. At my job I am forced to used windows and I switched to Vivaldi on that full time. At home, however, I have a MacBook and can't make the switch to Vivaldi. It drains my battery almost twice as fast as Safari. Also, favicons are blurry and my speakers pop every time I start it. There are just too many bugs on Mac.
-
@chrisvio, report the bugs.
If nobody report they never get fixed.Cheers, mib
How to do a bugreport for Vivaldi
Report each bug seperately at https://vivaldi.com/bugreport/
Describe the issue as precise as you can.
Add some information about extensions you use.
Add information about the operating system and version you use.
If you have problems with video or audio give us information about your installed codecs and graphics card/GPU.
Add a exact link to the page where the issue comes up and can be tested.
After reporting the issue, you will receive a confirmation mail from the bugtracker.
In a reply to this mail you can add more information and files (like screenshots or testcases) as attachments and it will be added automatically to bug report.
If you have questions about the bug please ask in forum first and do not forget to post the VB-XXXXX bug number (you can find it in confirmation mail). Thanks in advance for helping us to make Vivaldi better!

hey guys. as someone who used vivaldi as default in the past, here are my suggestions:
- android version
- easy way to send pages/text back and forth between clients
- 2F Authentication (a must for sync imo)
less important:
- improved download manager
- battery friendly/or as an option like opera(i think it's opera?)

Work in progress, but slow because the developer team is still very small.
- easy way to send pages/text back and forth between clients
Needs some extra explanation because it can either mean something like casting or something completely different. Not sure atm if there is already a bug or feature request about it ...
- 2F Authentication (a must for sync imo)
Depends. If you have secured your stuff with the encryption password (as you really should), nobody should be able to access your data because it gets encrypted on your computer with strong encryption, is then sent to the server with extra authentication and added transport encryption, and if you retrieve it again, you can only decrypt it, if you are in possession of the encryption password, which is and should be different to your login password.
The server can not decrypt it because it does not your encryption password at all, and only the person in possession of the encryption password can decrypt it - meaning: You.
less important:
- improved download manager

Does hibernating background tabs help?

Most of these are already in the Feature Requests forum, where you can vote for them.

This does not stop me from using Vivaldi as my default browser, but it does stop me from using it for one task that I often need to do.
Edit the Source Code of Local files
I can right-click and view the page source, or the frame source, but I cannot edit it. Nor can I open it in an external editor. I still use Opera 12.18 for this task, and open the source code in Notepad2, which is a basic text editor with line-numbering, syntax highlighting, and a decent find and replace feature.

My reply will start a bit like Pesala's reply.
This does not stop me from using Vivaldi as my default browser, but it does stop me from using my whole list of bookmarks/folders.What I don't like much in Vivaldi is the way bookmarks are accessed to from the Bookmarks menu, compared to the way they are displayed in the 'old' Opera. I miss a lot the one-page-style 'old' Opera is displaying long list of bookmarks: when the page height is full, just hover the mouse over the last line to open another column and so on. In Vivaldi, long lists are displayed as a single column, the user has to scroll down to reach the desired bookmark/folder (has to scroll a lot when the bookmark/folder is far from the beginning). It's sometimes difficult to read those bookmarks/folders while scrolling through the list. On the other hand, 'old' Opera way is easier to read, and appears more efficient. Another point is that it's easier for the user to 'remember' in which column the desired bookmark/folder is, no such thing when scrolling. For these reasons I keep my long list of bookmarks/folders within the 'old' Opera and only use a small number (more recent ones) within Vivaldi.
-
@liyann I have no bookmark folders long enough to need scrolling. If a list gets too long, I just add a subfolder like this:
Pretty much the same as More Items in Opera 12.18, but with the advantage of having the subfolder at the top instead of the bottom.
-
Still this thread staggers on? Incredibubble. So many people still depriving themselves of so much browser goodness. Nose, face, cut.
-
@Pesala
Indeed, having 'More Items' at the top looks better already.
Ordering that way is a good way, no need to scroll anymore, back to Opera 12.18 style. However, it would probably require to re-sort/re-organize all the bookmarks/folders. -

Unfortunately, that's the only way to get the bookmarks looking good. See also Limit the Width of Bookmark Bar Folders.
Don't be tempted to do it all at once. I have gradually edited my bookmarks over the four years or so that I have been using Vivaldi, ever since importing my bookmarks from Opera 12.18.
- I use manual sorting, and drag & drop in the Bookmarks Panel to reorder them
- I rename bookmarks to keep them short
- I add & for access keys
- I add nicknames for the most frequently used
- I delete unused or broken bookmarks whenever I come across them.
Although several improvements are needed to bookmarks in Vivaldi, it might be a long time before we get them since there are currently about 1,336 feature requests, and only 20 or so devs working to add them while fixing bugs.
-
@Pesala
It's more or less what I was thinking about. There will for sure be some broken links, some are older than the early 2000ies, it will reduce the number a bit.
Four years! Whaaa... I hope it won't take that long Anyway I started to re-arrange the bookmarks/folders. Not the same conditions but Opera bookmarks management (under win7) looks faster than Vivaldi one (under linux mint).
Thanks for the link about the width of bookmark menu. Choosing short names would help already.
Many requests. It's likely a good sign, people do care about the browser they are using. Not so much developers, maybe easier to communicate and more flexible. -

How can anyone use this without web-apps?
The option to save any webpage as an application and have it open in an app window and function as an application with its own icon in the taskbar.
Without this, vivaldi is like a play thing.
