Option to disable tab hibernation
-
@jumpsq That's another request and yeah, we need a addon to do that, too...
-
I want to create a new thread, but it has everything to do with this thread.
I found the same solution @Jazzef spoke of: vivaldi://discards to toggle the auto discard.
I was wondering if the toggle from the above, can be added to the tab menu. That way one can select specific tabs to remain loaded.
-
Google meet keeps hibernating so the meeting would stop after a few minutes. Is there some option to prevent some sites from hibernating like in Microsoft Edge.
-
Need that kind of feature, just to select which tabs have not to hibernate.
Some tabs have dynamic data, and hibernate does not put it on hold, but simply reload the tab. So if you were on a page with dynamic data, you'll lose everything, and that's very boring.
Edge allows users to prevents domains from hibernate, Vivaldi should propose the same trick.
-
is there a certain length of time until a unused tab is hibernated in Vivaldi ? or is it working on the amount of RAM available?
-
@mannixmd have you tried the 'auto tab discard' extension?
-
I support this. For some reason, I'm unable to install the desktop messenger app, and if it weren't for my phone, I would completely miss every messenger messages I receive, because it it always hibernating unless I AFK on it. Something I generally don't do.
I used to be able to rely on the pinned tabs never going into hibernation for all of my important services. But now, I can't even do that. Please bring this feature back.

Did we get a solution for this? Are the add-ons suggested earlier on this thread still the best we can do?
I'm trying and loving Vivaldi, but not being able to whitelist the tabs I want to keep awake is creating real problems for me.

@delbruck
Hi, check:
chrome://settings/performance
There you can disable the feature or add pages.
This is Chromium code, the Vivaldi team don´t touch this.
Vivaldi never hibernate tabs for me, maybe you a low on memory?Cheers, mib

Strange, that URL takes me to vivaldi://settings and I don't see a performance section. Searching the settings for the word performance gives nothing.
And if there's an option to disable the feature or add pages, I'm not seeing it either. -
I only have 8 gigs of RAM, but I don't have any trouble with low memory with other browsers or programs. Now I'm running Vivaldi and other programs and I'm at 85% usage
-
I'm on Windows10, by the way.
Thank you for answering!
-
-
@delbruck chrome://settings redirects to vivaldi://settings, but it is not the same as the Settings dialog. This is what you should see.
-
@Pesala I understand and that's what I expected to see, but you can take a look, there's no performance section
Even writing manually "vivaldi://settings/performance" takes me nowhere. Weird.
I'm going to reset settings and reinstall Vivaldi if that doesn't work. Thanks again!
-
@Pesala I've reinstalled Vivaldi and I get the same result, no performance. But I won't touch any settings or install extensions and I'll see if tabs hibernate or not.
-
@delbruck I think it have to be enabled in settings if not already present:
Disabled should prevent hibernation.
-
@Hadden89 ha! that worked! I see the Performance section and I can adjust the setting now.
Thank you so much! -
@delbruck
Hi, it is possible @Pesala and me make a mistake, this setting is enabled by default in newer chrome versions, for Vivaldi 6.0 you have to enable it with:vivaldi://flags/#battery-saver-mode-available
But even enabled it shows only in the left settings list, strange.
I was sure I saw this in Vivaldi 6.0.
Stay tuned, this is enabled by default in the next Vivaldi 6.1, the flag is removed from the Chromium developers.Cheers, mib
-
@mib2berlin I think I solved it with Hadden89's comment, but I'll keep an eye on this.
Thank you all so much for your help

I'm having a similar issue. When I open https://www.reddit.com/live/18hnzysb1elcs it loads a lot of javascript to load info from twitter. If I don't want to wait, but switch to another tap in the meanwhile, the retrieval of info from twitter is halted, until I come back to the tab. I added the site to the Performance section, but it doesn't help. I don't have the high efficiency mod flag available, search in flags comes up with nothing. I'm on latest Vivaldi 6.2 on Windows.
-
@Tuexss That doesn't look like the problem I had, maybe your question will get more noticed if you open a new thread, looks like you aren't getting answers in this one.
Good luck!
-
@Hadden89 Unfortunately, this flag seems to have been removed in last version of Vivaldi (6.6.3271.55 on Win 10). Any chance Vivaldi team could add this feature?
Sometimes preventing hibernation for some tabs are important. For example tabs displaying page with heavy files will use more ressources to reload after hibernation than keeping them alive.
