Option to Open New Tabs in Background as Default

@Pesala and @Gaëlle said in Option to Open New Tabs in Background as Default:
Also, why is Ctrl + click or a mouse gesture that are already available not an option for you?
-
ctrl-click is not an option because I can use only 1 hand !! (yes, those people exist too!)
-
middle mouse click is not an option because I use no mouse, only touchpads on my laptops
-
right click requires choosing from a menu which is cumbersome
-
gestures is not an option because a) they don't work well on my touchpads, and b) I don't like to use them, because too cumbersome , difficult to remember for me, etc.
-
I tried many chrome extensions, including the suggested 'long-click' but they are buggy or offer a bad user experience (at least for me).
In my pre-vivaldi years I used firefox which had an excellent extension for this (tab mix plus), and I never ran into problems with it.
I always installed this extension as my first thing to do.Luckily Vivaldi has most features of this extension, which allowed me to switch to Vivaldi. But Vivaldi still lacks decent links management. This extension handles links superbly.
See https://tabmixplus.org/support/viewtopic.php?t=3
feature request :
-
maybe Vivaldi can copy the link management features of tab mix plus?
-
Another thing to do is an easy accessible toggle button to turn the function on (e.g. search sites) or off (e.g. payment sites) depending of the website we visit.
Please consider this feature requests.

I just remembered I asked for this feature some years ago, even referring to the 'tab mix plus' extension.
@jon, the Vivaldi CEO jumped in, and promised that this feature would be implemented.
That feature request was even marked DONE, what is clearly a mistake, as it is not implemented yet.
Although "something" is done, that "implementation" TOTALLY misses the point.
in the settings page you have the option:
new tab from link opens in background
You would expect that this option changes the standard behavior of the left-click, and that, when enabled, a left-click on a link would open a new tab in the background (as the option clearly says)
but the only thing this option does is REMOVING RIGHT-click MENU-item (why???)
enabling the option gives this:
disabling the option gives this:
so the only thing that the option does is REMOVING an option from a right-click menu, and then, even worse, change the associated action of the same menu item??? (why oh why??)
- ENABLING the option "New tab from link opens in background" REMOVES the menu item "Open link in background tab" and then it changes the function of the menu item "open link in new tab" to open the links in the background.
This is a first class example of bad user interface design, as it only leads to confusion and nothing else.
Never change the behaviour of a menu item!!- DISABLING the option "New tab from link opens in background" ADDS the menu item "Open link in background tab"
This is another example of bad user interface design!
Why remove a menu item?? Just leave the menu items, they don't harm anyone. The only logical action for that option, is just doing what the option "New tab from link opens in background" says, and that is :
when left clicking on a link, "open link in background tab", no more, no less. And especially not adding/removing items from menus. The rationale for that is a mystery for me.
Or, for a more superb link management solution, refer to the firefox extension "tab mix plus" (see above), that handles this graciously with no problems whatsoever.

It makes sense in that if the primary option is to open links in a background tab, then the menu option becomes superfluous. As opposed to opening in the current tab, then you have the menu option if you don't want that in that instance.
The problem seems to be that most(?) sites override any user settings and do whatever they want. Not sure if other extensions force this somehow, but I have that option enabled and find myself using CTRL+click or drag/dropping links to open as the option is rarely enforced.
It seems Tab Mix Plus may do things differently, in which maybe it would be an option for Vivaldi to incorporate some of it's functions.

I agree with you, but this is exactly the same as Firefox. Open Link in New Tab is at the top of the menu, and it opens a link in a New Background Tab.
The change satisfies only some users, and could have been done without any new feature, by editing the context menu, moving Open Link in Background Tab to the top.
It seems that the decision was made not to override the web designer’s choice on how to open links.
Maybe start a new feature request, and see if it gains any traction.

@Pesala thank you for your comments

Hello there! Does anyone have any news about this feature ? It would be much appreciated, if I was using a mouse I would just middle click all the time but I like using my trackpad. Or maybe someone knows an extension that "fakes a middle-click" only when clicking links? Kind of a weird idea but I really can't find any workaround and this feature would literally change my life.
Thanks in advance folks, have a great day! -
@demianday How hard is it to use mouse gestures on a track pad?
-
@Pesala No thanks, not that it's hard but I just don't find it as convenient or as quick as a satisfying left click. Now do you have actual news about the feature?
-
@demianday Everything has been said already. Just read the whole thread.
The feature request is tagged as DONE, (although it is not).
-
@Pesala Listen, thank you for answering so fast but I really don't see how you're helping man, do you actually happen to know if the feature is being worked on or something? Has something changed in the past 11 months?
-
@demianday
Hi, if a developer start to work on a request the thread would be tagged as "Pipeline", active on development as "Work in Progress".
This is not even tagged as "Nice to Have", I would not wait for it.
A moderator should remove the "Done" tag.Cheers, mib

@kuu Hey everyone, I found a workaround while viewing a reddit post on how to edit the right-click context menu (user TripplerX brought me to this solution)- this can serve as the best workaround in my opinion (or maybe this is how they wanted it to be lol).
Here are the steps:
- Go to Vivaldi Settings
- Appearance
- Scroll down to 'Menu Customization' -> change the dropdown from "Application Menu" to "Link"
- There where you will see both "Open Link in New Tab" and "Open Link in Background Tab"
- Right click on "Open Link New Tab" then press 'Delete'
- Afterwards, right click on "Open Link in Background Tab" and press 'rename' and rename it to "Open Link in New Tab"
and there you go! That's the best solution I found without needing to install any type of extension whatsoever.
My original intention under the Link dropdown was to right click on the [Image menu] content item and deselect "Show as subfolder" because needing to access the submenu every time when copying images was a hassle lol

@Hidlsh It is easier to change it in Settings, Tabs, New Tab Position:
New Tab from Link Opens in BackgroundHowever, why not just move Open Link in Background Tab to the top of the menu, in Settings, Appearance, Menu Customisation, Link?
-
@Gaelle said in Disable "switch to the new tab immediately" when clicking "open in new tab":
We discussed this request internally and we like the idea but came to the conclusion that though it's possible to implement this feature, it would be very difficult to do it properly as opening links works differently on various websites. Let's imagine we add this feature and every single link you click on a page opens in the background. It would create a huge number of opened tabs and take quite some resources and time to manage and close them all would amount to more than spending a second more to use already available options. Furthermore, it would cause issues or even break many websites. For example, going through the process of paying for online purchases. When each click opens a new tab there are so many things that could go wrong resulting in a failed transaction or double payment.
In the meantime, there are many extensions out there that attempt to do this, but most of them are buggy and/or cause more harm than good. However, you can try the extensions out yourself by adding them to Vivaldi from Chrome Web Store. One that seems to work is LongClick New Tab. Please give us more feedback about how you expect the behavior to function.
Also, why is Ctrl + click or a mouse gesture that are already available not an option for you? That old thread is no longer available, and Gaelle has moved on, but this topic should be tagged as WILL NOT DO for the above reasons, rather than pretending that it has been DONE or might be done in the future.
