let's not let ego or our pride in being better than Chrome users hurt ourselves.
This is not a motive of Vivaldi developers. Functions are not eliminated or blocked to spite Chrome.
-
I can't emphasize sufficiently how useful this feature is in Chrome, to the point where it's absence prevents me from switching to Vivaldi.
The tab-to-search functionality is a well-documented part of Chromium and should be integrated into Vivaldi.
-
Just want to also say that I support this. Easily one of the things I feel the impact of NOT having more than anything else.
I logged in just to support this feature request.

Yes, this would be fantastic to have integrated. I'm currently fed up with Chrome (v79 changed too many things and now overnight I can't load a few sites) and have switched to Vivaldi but it's taking some getting used to. Not having tab-to-search is the only real issue I have at this point. It will take quite a bit of time to break the habit.
-
the tab thing is kind of driving me crazy as i try to migrate from chrome. tab makes the search keyword visibly highlighted. without it, there is a smallish favicon to show that you are using a custom search. nickname does not work if there is a space at the very left. it gets confusing.
sure, i would eventually get used to it... but it would be nice if user is not using a dedicated search box... he could have the option to replicate the tab to load search keyword thing.
as already mentioned, google is making a lot of changes in the newer builds of chrome which is breaking workflow for a lot of us. and this is probably the first time since the launch of chrome that i am seriously working on moving away from it. it might be worth considering to make the transition easy!

I don't think I'll ever switch to Vivaldi unless it has the Chrome-like search. It's not a matter of adding search engines automatically - a simple option that lets users choose will be enough.
The real issue is the scalability. Users cannot and don't want to memorize every nickname for every search engine. Chrome's address bar (or omnibar) autocompletes and suggests that there is a search engine with this domain name, which makes it much more scalable.
-
It's a "feature" I wouldn't ever use but if users feel the need V should go for adding as an option.
-
This is absolutely needed. I don't like pressing 2 letters for just a suggestion to popup. In chrome, you type one letter and it pops out.
Sort of why was this feature even removed for the first time?
-
@EvilSpark Vivaldi does not start out as Chrome and get modified. It is Vivaldi, written from scratch, which uses the Chromium engine (Blink) as its web engine.
-
This browser is amazing, but please add this feature!! Nickname search is great but this way we don't have to set everything up.

can someone re-add the gif in the main post??

Yeah, two years later and this is still the single feature really holding me back from switching to Vivaldi. I keep trying to do it, and...this holds me back. This is something that appears to be part of the Chromium source, and is a part of Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and even Brave, which is probably the closest competitor to Vivaldi imo.
It's really unfortunate that this still isn't integrated into Vivaldi, even as an optional setting. It's super intuitive for users once implemented.
-
@Awesomolocity can u record an illustrative gif please?? (ShareX is free software for that if u dont have one)
-
@Awesomolocity Since it's mediated through the UI, Vivaldi will have to write their version of it from scratch. The one in Chromium can't be used in Vivaldi's interface.

In case it's not clear - the functionality is really smart. As you're typing, the first suggested website kinda pops up into the navigation bar. If you've done a site search on that particular website before, it'll have a "tab to search" functionality - regardless of what letter you're on. It's quite similar to Vivaldi's "shortcuts", but even more intelligent and intuitive, I think. For example, I can type "yo" and youtube will likely be the first suggested result. Hit tab, and I can start typing my search query. You can see this taken to the extreme with "amazon" in the example above - I typed "a" and then was able to hit tab to start my search query.
@Ayespy Does Vivaldi have a straight up different UI system on top of the Blink engine? If so, I did not realize that. Regardless - it's still something they'd be able to replicate functionality of if they desired, I'm sure. And I hope it happens, because it's the one thing really holding me back from leaping over entirely.

Yes, it does. It's the only browser that does.
-
@Ayespy That's a pretty nifty tidbit that I did not realize before today. Thanks for that!
-
@Awesomolocity Yeah - the unique elements and architecture of the UI is what enables the flexibility and configurability that Vivaldi offers. It has trade-offs, in that certain "expected" functions have to be re-written from scratch, and don't work "as expected" until that can happen, but to my mind, it's worth it because I can arrange the UI per my work flow in Vivaldi, and in no other browser. So, there's that...

@Ayespy or other mods, can u add this gif in description (and on the forums itself, i.e. rather than imgur link).
