Context Menu in Opened Bookmarks Bar Folders
-
Right-click on open bookmark bar folders and subfolders to show a menu instead of opening the link in a new tab.
-
PLEASE make the right mouse button and the middle mouse button work for sub-menus and menu-items in sub-menus!!!
Currently they work fine for top-level menus or menu-items in the bookmarks bar BUT they don't work for sub-menus or items in sub-menus!
People actually use the bookmarks bar! Please make it work properly!
This is basic functionality and when it's missing it really turns people off Vivaldi!
-
Would be great if we could have this implemented! Show stopper #1 for me at the moment to use vivaldi . Edit or change bookmarks doesn't work nice in the bookmark menu. Especially if you have a long list.
-
@siegson There is no reason why this should be a show-stopper. Editing bookmarks in the Bookmarks Panel or Bookmarks Tab is simple.
You may have to wait a long time for the Bookmarks Bar to be fully complete. We have been told that it will take a lot of work, and there are those easy workarounds for organising bookmarks. The team is small (currently 42) and the Feature Request list is already up to 23 pages (460 feature requests).
Sync and email are in the Pipeline

@siegson Pesala mentitions a 42-man team (which I think is 43 now), but it should be undestood that, of these, only about 20 or 21 are actually developers, engineers, QA, etc. Everyone else is support, marketing, community admin, premises care and maintenance, etc.

@pesala I don't understand the description. When I right-click on folder directly located on the bookmark bar I am presented with a context menu. Are you saying this doesn't happen? Or something else?
-
@browseruser The problem is not with bookmarks on the bar. The problem is with bookmarks in folders on the bar.
-
@ayespy I see, I think the description could be made more clear because to me it looks like it's talking about right clicking on folders: "Right-click on bookmark bar folders..."
-
I actually use this a lot. I don't want to have my long list of bookmarks open on the side panel. I have a few key folders organized at the top for quick access and organization. It is kind of infuriating not to be able to open as a new tab with a middle click or edit the name directly from the context menu.
This feature alone hurts my experience and prevents me from recommending the browser to others because I know they too will find this jarring.

You can open bookmarks in a new tab with right-click, or in the same tab with left-click.

Just because you do, it does not mean that others will. It very much depends on their workflow.

I also want to be able to rename and delete them directly from there as well. Like mentioned earlier, yes for these things I can go to the bookmarks panel open it up and edit them there. I usually end up accidentally opening them but I attribute that to user error and unfamiliarity more than anything else. It is still an uncomfortable experience when other browsers provide the direct ability to edit the bookmarks in these subfolders on the toolbar.

That is fair, their workflow may and is likely different than mine. But similarly others could also find it worse.

That is obvious, and it is why I started this thread, but it does not stop you opening bookmarks in a new tab from Bookmarks Bar folders. Middle-click is the shortcut for opening links in a new background tab — use the standard shortcut of Shift+Click (or non-standard Right-click) to open them in a new foreground tab.

You are right, I misspoke about the irritating component. I do use right click to open a new tab and it is just habit that I haven't changed that other browsers allow. But it also means I cannot open these items in a new window (I do this with YouTube to bring the videos to my second monitor a lot). I don't think we disagree on any of the points other than you clarifying ways to open up bookmarks in subfolders in a new tab. Thanks for clearing that up and apologies for my previous stubbornness.

For me too, this is one of the main gripes that keeps me from switching to Vivaldi as my main browser. I work with many toolbar bookmarks a lot. Having to do the detour through the bookmarks panel, and re-finding the bookmarks in the folder structure, every time I want to rename or delete a bookmark takes a lot of time and effort.
As @MatthewS2077 has pointed out, this already works for bookmarks that are on the top level in the toolbar, as well as for the folders, but not for bookmarks within those folders. So the current behaviour is not just inconvenient for some users' workflows, but also actually inconsistent.
I also don't expect it to be much work to implement, seeing as it already works properly on the top-level. All this ticket would ask for is to apply the same handling to all elements.

@vahid-moosavi As there are multiple ways to organize and edit bookmarks, the extensive coding to build a context menu for the bookmarks bar is not a high priority.

@pesala
you really need to improve the wording in your first post and title to specify that you are referring to subfolders in the bookmarks bar, not root folders. otherwise, people may overlook this feature request as something that already exists. -
In the bookmarks bar folder drop down menus, the right click menu is missing. This problem is especially bad because we can't right click on a subfolder to open it as a group of bookmarks. Please fix.

cmon people, its a simple missing right-click function that already exists on other bookmarks, so obviously it doesn't require some ground breaking coding. How many years will it take to fix this ? Ugh
I just want to be able to delete a bookmark, that's all. -
I actually use the bookmarks bar to access all of my bookmarks (I also use the speed dial). In addition to my most common bookmarks across the top, I have a folder called "BOOKMARKS" which contains the rest of my 99.9% bookmarks. It's quick to access, but I really miss these features discussed here.
