Custom Speed Dial thumbnails – Vivaldi Browser snapshot 1.10.862.6
-
@milkb0at The feature is new and immature. They're working on this. Sync (which I am testing backstage) also deletes speed dial images. It's a work in progress.
-
@milkb0at Yeah, that's exactly why I gave up on custom thumbnails initially -- it's in fact possible to accomplish this with a custom modification for the longest time, but it was just too painful losing them all.
-
@milkb0at There needs to be a lock. As soon as I discover F5 wipes them out I gave up till that isn't possible.

@Pesala This is something that the Chrom{e,ium} folks have recently gotten around to completing...
Hallelujah, this is great news! There was this old addon around the store for that. Now it will no londer be needed

At least 49 users will be happy.
Fifty, fifty users will be happy. Count me in

@duarte.framos Well, I was never interested in custom speed dial images, 'cuz I could always tell what the page was from the thumbnail. Now I created a mess of my own optimized logos, and I like them. My county elections department thumb is an animated waving flag, and my weather page thumb is falling snow. I'm starting to like this, tho it was not important to me until I started playing with it.
-
@Ayespy I understand it is not an essential feature at all, although I do love it and intend to make heavy use of it in the future I can feel it is totally a gimmick.
Nevertheless as stated elsewhere I just find one descriptive easy to read icon faster to interpret at first glance then a miniaturized screenshot of the website. Especially since some websites have an ever-changing face full of banners and ephemeral images, one can't even use muscle memory to find them easily.
There is also the aesthetic appeal of customizing it, using a personal style and of course pretty icons or animated gifs. Oh boy animated thumbs!!
-
@duarte.framos
It's acceptable, if I say so myself.
-
@milkb0at, @g_bartsch, @luetage
Thanks for the comments, I'll just bother the team again in "VB-20803 - Disable F5 on Speed Dial" -

This gives me the idea that Vivaldi should have one thumb dedicated to showing the weather live in realtime to the person's location for a website, maybe one for our choosing. Or maybe just a widget on the upper right corner of the SD page for showing the weather from a selection of weather sites of our choosing. That would be cool.

@matmur44: confirmed for Vivaldi 64 bit on Win 10 (creators update)

@dystasia:
A third option could be to add an edit button somewhere after you click on the bookmark icon of any website. The edit button would allow us to select an image of the website or a section. I think the current opera allows the user to select between multiple images in a carousel manner. A novelty to this would be to add the Page Capture Selection to select exactly what you want. -
the picture on thumbnail must to fit it whatever pictures throw on it...
right now it is blow up the or mess up the speediall -
@ian-coog: Not a bug, it's by design. It doesn't import anything, it sets up a mapping between the local file and a unique id so that it can be referenced using a chrome://vivaldi-data/local-image/<id> scheme.
-
@mozzer: That is by design, no images a needlessly copied and duplicated, a direct mapping is set up.
-
pettern: sorry but that's not how it should be, please reconsider it. I see no point in having automatic thumbnails stored in top sites and not the custom ones. This forces me to have a directory, external to vivaldi datas, to just keep those thumbnails, because if i'll put them in a vivaldi directory, they would be erased at every update.
-
@Gwen-Dragon I guess this is what you were looking for
-
@An_dz I had an odd issue with an extra sign in to Chrome page popping up so I did a complete uninstall & reinstall.
Now everything works fine, in fact better than before.
All is very very good and much appreciated -
