[HOW TO] Manually Backup/Restore/Transfer your profile to another device π₯βπΎβπ»

@Zalex108 OK, I will look in chrome. Thank you, again. The TrueCopy app is very, very fast & I like it much better than what I was using. I just wish the interface was bigger; very hard to read the tiny font and I'm not going to change my display settings to accommodate it. Now, I'm going to find information on Error Codes 522 & 534.

I wonder if it is possible to transfer Vivaldi profile (not bookmarks or other things that can be easily synced) from Windows to Linux? I found this thread, which describes the process in details and with all possible safeguards in place (but, in essence, it is about transferring the directory Β«DefaultΒ», as far as I understand), but my intuition tells me it will not be that simple, if at all possible, for cross-OS transfer. Can it be done?

@SNCH It can be done, and it is that simple. As long as Vivaldi is not running, you can simply copy/paste the folder. Afterward, everything will be as in Windows, except extensions and passwords (which can be synced.)

exactly!
One thing more, If you create other profiles, their names will be "Profile 1", "Profile 2" (...and so on) at the same level as the "Default" directory. -

Very thorough description (maybe too thorough). For the less fussy, I have now transferred my profile a number of times and simply do the following:
- Install Vivaldi somewhere, run it and close it
- copy the "User" directory from another installation (I usually use a standalone installation on my USB key)
- run Vivaldi again and just re-do the bits that are broken (passwords, extensions)
Apart from slowly re-submitting passwords when I first use the sites again, the whole thing takes about five minutes.
@WAK2000 I see you upvoted this very old post of mine... but it's not good advice any more!
It's now safer just to install, delete all default bookmarks (and speeddial) then sync.
You can save most of your UI settings as a theme to install on the new profile as well - there's only a few things to manually update after that.

@mossman Of course, with sync having problems at the moment, exporting and re-importing passwords would be the most reliable option until sync is back up again (should be soon).

I thought about mentioning the current sync problems, but since this is a very old thread advising how to backup/migrate settings, anyone coming here in future won't be affected by them.
... hopefully!

So with the current sync problems (as mentioned above), it's unfortunate timing as I'm right in the middle of migrating from a Windows Desktop to a MacBook Pro. With Sync down I'm kind of stuck unable to setup Vivaldi on the new machine.
Is it possible to copy my profile from a Windows machine to a MacOS machine or will that cause all sorts of issues due to the different folder structures and paths etc?
I'd love to just wait for Sync instead of messing around with this, but it looks like sync has been out of action for nearly two weeks now
Another alternative I thought of was to just install OneTab on the new instance and migrate all my browser tabs to the new machine. What will happen when sync comes back up - will the new browser then install and sync all the things I haven't setup yet?
Cheers!
Alex
