@christianherrera guess i will use raindrop, i was scared of losing years of bookmarks
-
Sync is now working perfectly for me across 6 linux, windows & ios devices. I want to thank the team for their hard work to get this done. I love Vivaldi and I am so glad to have it working again. This must have been a nightmare.
Happy Festivus! -
@christianherrera, it is supposed that a backup of ALL important data and documents, not only of the browser, is a normal behavior of any user, at least if he want to change the device. In the browser the most important are bookmarks, passwords and maybe notes in Vivaldi, settings and other isn't so important and can be recovered with a little dedication. I have my bookmarks (at least those which still exist) since almost 20 years, despite of several changes of PC and browser.
It's so easy to save data on rhe cloud in one of the dozends of services, even free ones, in pendrives, extern HD or any other device.Servers and PCs can fail, mobiles lost or robbed and always bad if you don't have a copy of your data at hand. It is very annoying that issue with the sync server and certainly the biggest issue since almost 10 years in Vivaldi, but this, a sync service is to synchronize the data between devices with changing data, it can serve in certain circunstances to recover the data when in one of the other devices they are still saved locally. Don't confuse a sync service with an backup system. If the server is ok, you can recover the last datas of the browser stored there, but this is a system for data transfer, not necesarly a storage service.
-
@Catweazle I haven't lost anything myself, but I think we all can understand that losing a lot of data is painful - regardless of whether or not it's incorrect to treat sync as a backup.
@christianherrera (I'm not part of the Vivaldi team) you can be certain that the Vivaldi team is not content with any user losing data. You have been hit by a most unfortunate combination of issues.
You a) relied on sync for backup when b) you formatted your SSD exactly when c) the service was down for the first time in the 10 years of Vivaldi's existence. Your frustration is totally comprehensible. There are other people who have reported losing some tab stacks (which is bad enough) but most people haven't lost anything because the synced devices kept their data locally intact. So given the currently available information, there was no massive data loss event.
-
@WildEnte, I also understand it, it also would shoot my blood pressure to Mars if I loose all my bookmarks and passwords, but it's also not fair to blame Vivaldi as the only guilty of an desastre which can ocurr to any service and even paid ones of big company, above in a service which isn't planned as backup service.
-
I did not lose my hundreds bookmarks and other data.
And it synced between Linuxes and a Windows 11 PC. Worked with my old encryption password. -
Never use Sync as a backup solution. This is not advised.
You need to backup your complete Windows user account to retain all profile data as Windows key store (DPAPI) encrypts data. New PC, new Windows account, all encryption keys lost.

Glad sync is back, but the bad thing is all data is lost!
Passwords are fine (backup is essential) but notes? I'm a writer, all notes are lost! This is absolutely not good... -
Lost nothing because I hadn’t reset the data on the server and had everything on my drive. I hadn’t touched anything which comes in conjunction with sync during sync-crash. Now—after sync is functioning again, I can reset my data on the server without any fear of data-loss.

Same as mine.

This is why I sync to my mobile, other PC and other operating system. It's saved localy and synced. If not, I would have lost all my text, bookmarks etc. as the other people here. "It's not if you loose, data, it's when". Backup is key.

who has bean caught while reinstall vivaldi or formatted the os that completely lost the data.
Your rage is understandable and what you mention is the weakest point. A message or an utility to save data before an uninstallation is necessary. That said, if you warn others that it is a bad browser, it is a double punishment they do not need. The loss of users is a pain for them , but prevent users to use it may cause the fall ot Vivaldi and you will not have any alternative in the future. That is what happened to me when in the beginning they redesign several times this community. I tried Opera, but you are just a product for them. I was glad enough to have the choice to come back to Vivaldi.

If you use "Sync", it means you have another device ? Are you able to check if the file "Note" is available ? Then "reset remote data" from that place and "synced" again ? And above all save this file before . The downside is that images will be lost.

@tcltk Thanks for the reply. Yes I have sync on another device but nothing, it's all blank...no notes...
-
Greetings!
Recently, the Vivaldi team did some upgrades on their servers. However, when they finished (today) after approximately 2 weeks or so, I couldn't find my previous sessions, nor the extensions. Only Got my bookmarks and passwords back.
Did anyone else face this issue? And if so, is there anyway we can get them back? This is really frustrating, and slowing down my workflow.

Hi,
Sync server got blank from previous data
Now the Sync data circuit should be done again:- Add a New Encryption Password
- Sync a Full Profile to Server
- Sync other partial, new devices to add / receive the Data.
If you sync first from a new device, no data will be downloaded.

Sync never was intended as a Backup, just as a service to merge and synchronize account's data.
For future backups

I cannot be of good help as my synchronization is fairly simple ( no opened tabs, no extensions, no history). Have you checked that for extensions for instance, those are set "on" on the device where they are installed ?

Hello everyone!
I also got my bookmarks and passwords when the synchronization worked briefly 3 days ago. I didn't lose anything with yesterday's launch either. I'm glad it's working again and I know it was worth the wait, because Vivaldi is the best browser for me. Thanks to the team for their hard work.
